Snapper fishing
Submitted by MALANA605 on Wed, 2018-01-03 14:50I have been boat fishings for 2 seasons now and to date have only caught 1 snapper that being around the Hale road reef structure. Apart from that I am more of a fish feeder than catcher. Do i need to go well beyond the 3 or 4 nm area to catch snapper, is 12 -15m to shallow?, should I be looking at heading out to the 30 to 40m depth area to locate them. I am starting to think that the one I did catch was actually lost. Not looking for actual locations but more the distance out and depth. I have the boat to get me there, a 6m cc old Razerline with a 130 honda on the back. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

Wind knots
Submitted by Livewire on Wed, 2018-01-03 13:03Casting with 4lb braid. The line is getting tangled around second last guide. I figured the line was so light the wind was doing it. Changed to 8lb same problem. Not sure if it's the type of braid I'm using any suggestions will be appreciated. Want to stay as light as possible.

Beach Fishing - Exmouth
Submitted by Scott129 on Tue, 2018-01-02 22:05Hi Guys,
Looking for advice on what setups to use for beach fishing in Exmouth.
Trying to target sharks mainly for a bit of fun and just wondering what is a good size line to use? Mono or braid? Size and length or trace?
Will also be having a go at using a shimano TLD 25 with a short beast master rod and casting with a drone. Have done a couple of tests around perth and it works well so far. Is there any reason why for this setup i couldnt go 100lb braid with 150lb trace? Was thinking of going overboard on the setup and just adjust drag as necessary in the hope that we loose nothing.
Any suggestions as to why this is a bad idea?
Thanks, Scott

Xmas bags
Submitted by sea-kem on Tue, 2018-01-02 17:42Had a few trips out over the break in some fairly ordinary wind and conditions, but the fish made up for it with some awesome bangers and some crays to top the bags off. Son topped it off today (last pic) with a bang on 10kg model.
Oh and so lovely to get pinged by some wanker in a yellow boat today lol. Watched him drive right by us and press the waypoint button on his GPS, good luck chum we were well off our mark.

Outrigger recommendations
Submitted by ranmar850 on Mon, 2018-01-01 18:15OK, all you bluewater addicts, I need some outrigger recommendations for the new rig. Likely to be side mounted, although T-toppers are a possibility given the sturdy hardtop it will have. Telescopic may be best for me, as i may be needing to get them out of the way for conventional fishing without pulling the boat out of the water. Think camped on the beach at Ningaloo for 6 weeks and not using the outriggers every day , but not wanting to have to remove them from the boat. 4.5 metrs should be long enough, only want to use single rigs, and tag lines preferred.

Submitted by mykel on Sun, 2017-12-31 16:21I have a 130 Yamaha salt water series 2 stroke and have had all sorts of things done to it at the local Yamaha dealer. for over heating.
It has been good for the past 20 hours, however; now the tell tale is very weak.
I tried flushing it and pushing 140Lb Fishing line down the pipe? (read that on line)
No improvement, I want to go fishing again on Tuesday, No service available until then?

KNOT HAPPY
Submitted by Superfish on Sun, 2017-12-31 10:13Went out yesterday to my favourite fishing spot near Rotto. Hooked what a believe to be a big Dhuie in about 30 foot of water. It pulled real hard, so did i to avoid being reefed and busted off. After about 10 seconds i lost the fish due to the UNI KNOT coming lose . This has happened to me on a number of occations before, my mate who did get Dhuie arround 650 reckons i should change to the HANGMANS KNOT as he had the same problem with the UNI KNOT in Exmouth a while back. Just wondering what you guys think is the best knot for terminal takle? I am also considering just using a drop loop that doesnt require swivels.

I finally managed to catch some crays! bout time lol... super stoked.
just a quick question on how to best keep fresh.
caught this morning, straight into sea water in esky, then into ice slurry at the ramp.
if i wanted to keep these until new years day for a family lunch, what would be the best way to go about it?
also do you guys put straight on ice once caught, or keep them alive in sea water until back home?
many thanks!!

Taking my 14 year old son to Albany for a few days camping after New Years. Was hoping for a bit of a heads up on what’s on offer down that way this time of year ? Will be in a 4.5m runabout so not keen on going out wide. Really just looking for a few pointers for inshore fishing. Staying at Emu point.

Mandurah crabs
Submitted by blu2fish on Fri, 2017-12-29 21:00Why is it that people (and I don't want to sound racist) of Asian ethenticity have to rape, pillage and plunder the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary taking anything that looks like a crab no matter what size they are, had a visitor from the Eastern States tell me that over the Christmas period they witnessed crabs of all sizes being taken at Island Point and when these pirates left they also left their rubbish laying everywhere, this was cleaned up by others. Not wanting to be critical of our Fisheries Officers but surely over a weekend like last they would be all over the popular spots, if this behavior is allowed to continue eventually the popular pastime of crabbing will have to be closed for a longer period to allow the stocks to improve, we don't want to have to close it off as they've done in Cockburn Sound....End of rant.

Calamari Classic 2018
Submitted by Help on Fri, 2017-12-29 17:29The popular Calamari Classic, presented by Anglers Fishing World, has spread its wings and will be held at the Cockburn Power Boats Association on Saturday,March 10 in 2018.
Organisers are preparing to stage the largest event ever from the new location as the three categories of competition will benefit from the new format.
It’s a one-stop shop. Power boat squidders can simply launch and then park adjacent to the prize giving and after-party.
Kayakers can launch in protected waters and within a few strokes be patrolling over productive squid banks while land base competitors will have the most convenient spots to operate within walking distance of the venue.
Organisers have kept the entry fee to a modest $25 but its money well spent because it entitles the competitors to:
• a complimentary dinner back at the club house
• bouncy castle for the kids back at the club
• lively after party with live music by International music sensation Monty Cotton
As well as over $5,000 in prizes for all three divisions, a major announcement will be made early in 2018 which will grab the attention of prospective contestants.
Competition organisers and the Cockburn Club have all bases covered when it comes to catering for visitors because the club will allow people to sleep on their trailer boats, enabling them to party on after the event.
Moorings and pens for visiting larger boats will also be available, so crews can enjoy the celebrations without the worry of navigating back to their base.
Registrations are open NOW at the competition website www.calamariclassic.com.au

The Dominator retrospective-updated with a new species!
Submitted by ranmar850 on Fri, 2017-12-29 09:43As you may have noticed from the For Sale section, my Dominator is for sale. I bought this boat intending it to be a keeper--it was bought from the original owner, I knew its history, and it was just sad seeing it sitting in the shed unused. He was getting on, and had passed it down to his son-in-law, who had never used it or even moved it from its regular storage. So I made him an offer, and it changed hands, complete with original purchase receipt. it needed a lot of updating, WRT electronics and wiring, so I did all that. Always shed stored, but never really polished, so a buff with 3M restore and wax bought it up a treat. It came with twin 60 Merc 2-strokes, late 90's with apparently very low hours. A s/hand F115a came up, a good trade was offered on the Mercs, so the install was done. A pot winch was added and a tipper, and later on, an anchor winch. I was happy with it, in general, I had an epiphany from watching people around my age and older dropping off the perch or just getting too old to get out, so the decision was made to go bigger and go hard for as long as I could. I've certainly fished a lot of days that I just would not have gone out in the tinny CC.
The Reefrunner is on order. I've only actually had this boat since early 2015, and looking back, I've really caught a lot of fish in under 2 and a half years. So here is the retrospective.

Furuno GP7000 For Deep Water Fishing
Submitted by tight lines 76 on Fri, 2017-12-29 06:46Hi fishos,
I currently have a Furuno GP7000 on board and would like to know whether anyone has incorporated a 1kw tranny with this unit and used it in 500-600m successfully?
I have heard a lot about the FCV588 and its capability of reading depths up to 700m with a 1kw tranny; but if I can avoid the cost of having to buy this unit and get away with the GP7000 + 1kw tranny, that would be a lot cheaper.
Feedback is appreciated.

thread started - whats the craziest thing you have seen on the water?
Submitted by Fish_Hunter on Thu, 2017-12-28 16:31for me i have a couple events, first being down at Bicton baths when the divers did a clean up one year, i was shocked at what was retrieved from the river floor.. car batteries,tv's, a wheel burrow, bbq list goes on.. some ppl are just pigs to dump this in our water ways. drop a line and lets see what really happens out there. Needs to be ocean or River related, who's got the best story ?? ohh and this other event of mine, well i was in line at the local boat ramp one morning with my heavily pregnant misses who was going to drive the car home when as i just stepped off my boarding ladder an impatient boat owner behind me decided to pull out and overtake the rest of us in line, his trailer ran over my feet !! as u can see from the picture my feet got bashed pretty hard, the misses went off her head at this guy and so on... the next day and a little bit early she gave birth to our son .. all ok, but me feet where tad sore for few weeks..
Anyone else care to share ?

Crab Nets
Submitted by maldugs on Thu, 2017-12-28 14:53I have been given 5 old style crab nets, ropes are shot but the rest ok, only thing is that the netting at the side only comes up to abot 30cm high, would that make it easier for the crabs to escape while pulling the net? they have a wire base and 2 rings.
