Nebbian1 ( snell try this)
Submitted by little johnny on Thu, 2018-03-22 07:08Have tag just above first hook. Grab other end of leader make a circle going from back of hook facing down. Grab top of your leader ( circle you made)wind down on shank of hook. Bit off spit pull tight.2 nd hook put in place where you want it. Grab end of tag make circle facing tag end downwards. Again get top of circle( leader) again wind down shank and pull tight. This is strongest I have found . Never comes undone. Line tightening on line. Your way has tag looping over . They tend to give way. Snell in picture can have cuts on loops and still hold

Cyclone question
Submitted by Silver Fox on Wed, 2018-03-21 21:41Normally Cyclones travel from east to west , yet the new one that’s just formed off the NT coast is predicted to track west to east . Why is this so ? . I’ve scoured the net and I’m not having any joy finding an answer , this is one for the Fishwrecked brains trust to enlighten me . Thanks people

Gascyone Pink Snapper Spawning Ban/ Closure- Have your say in the Fisheries/ Recfish survey
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Wed, 2018-03-21 19:13Hey all
You might be aware that a Pink Snapper spawning closure (just for the pinks- all other demersals will still be fair game in the area) has been proposed for 3 months of the year in one of the main spawning areas out of Carnarvon- the north end of Bernier Island, similar to that in place in Cockburn sound etc.
This is a result of severely depleted Pinky stocks in the area. The proposal is now out for public comment and I would like to bring this to everyone attention to give you all the opportunity to have your say.
For those interested, here are the Fisheries official links that contains the maps and the details:
http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/About-Us/Media-releases/Pages/Rebuilding-Gascoyne-pink-snapper-stocks.aspx
http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Documents/other/public_comment/gascoyne_oceanic_pink_snapper_proposal_2018.pdf
This is not all falling on the recreational fishing sector. I have it on pretty good authority that the commercial fisherman will be going down to 50t pink quota for the whole region (and they have chosen to do that themselves so good on them for it). That’s an approx. 75-80% reduction from current quota levels and they will also be locked out of the area in question, same as the rec guys. As this quota covers the whole Gascoyne region (from north of Shark Bay to just south of the Murions) this big reduction in their quotas will effectively mean that they won’t be able to target Pinks in most of the other spawning grounds in the region as they would need to keep most of the remaining quota for their pink bycatch while fishing for other demersals. Last thing they would want to do is blow their pink quota early and effectively leave them not being able to fish mixed/ keep the pinks they get elsewhere. All the other demersal fish stocks are pretty good by all accounts, so the pros should most def be allowed to make their livings chasing those IMO
That’s just what I’ve been told, so it might not be 100% true at this stage, but no doubt more information will follow in the coming weeks. Fisheries should have probably included that info in the press releases in the links.
Please don’t turn this post into a commercial vs recreational debate, how it can’t be policed properly etc. It’s not the intent of it- it’s just to raise awareness and give everyone a chance to have their say through the survey
In my personal opinion, I think the proposal is pretty decent overall. It’s never going to perfect- it will be hard to police for the grey shirts (you’d like to think people will do the right thing, but we all know human nature unfortunately) etc. My only concern with it is that if it is a “no possession” ruling, it will stop everyone being able to anchor up at night in the area (the charter boats and most recs stay in the bays in the proposed area within the proposed region) and means a fair bit more travel around the top of the island on the way home if you keep a couple of pinks caught outside of the zone, which could cause some safety issues if it adds and extra 5-10kms onto your trip home, especially if the weather turns to crap while you’re out there. But again, just my only semi-educated opinion. Make up your own mind.
If you fish in the Gascoyne region (keep in mind that not just poor old Carnarvon, this will inadvertedly affect everyone from Shark Bay to Exmouth in terms of Pink snapper stocks for the future), nows your chance to have your say via the survey

Bitten off by Salmon
Submitted by nebbian1 on Wed, 2018-03-21 14:27I've had a couple of bite offs in the last week, and was wondering how to prevent them.
The most recent was a salmon, I almost had him landed after a good fight (including a couple of jumps, it was a good fat fish) and bang the line goes limp and I reel in a broken leader.
The leader was 60 lb Black Magic leader, snelled to some 3/0, 5/0 and 4/0 circle hooks. In both bite offs, the leader was bitten off right at the snell knot, so after it's gone through the eye of the hook and starting to make its way into the wraps.
How do I prevent this? I tried using 40 lb plastic coated wire, but don't seem to get the same hookup rate as I get when using the more supple 60 lb leader. I'm not sure if this is flurocarbon, it just says "Tough trace" on the packet.
Should I use 100 lb leader? Should I use dyneema, mono, or something instead? Appreciate your thoughts.

Cockburn sound
Submitted by rossco21 on Wed, 2018-03-21 11:48Hi Guys just chasing some info on parking whilst being out in Cockburn sound. I have heard rumours that the old Woodman's point boat ramp besides power boat club can get sketchy for parking and things going missing off your car. A) just wondering if this is true, B) What ramp does everyone use to fish Cockburn. Hoping to take the old man out for a squid session in there.

Submitted by Shane O on Wed, 2018-03-21 09:19Hey fishos
going to have a look at a 2005 v8 Petrol/gas (duel fuel) landcruiser today, 246000 kms on clock. Does anyone have much experience with these cars? Are the duel fuel cars are good buy or something I should stay clear of?
is that a lot of kms, given it is not a diesel would there be things to look out for?
they are asking for $23000 looks to be a one owner car.

Electric anchor winch
Submitted by Matts123 on Tue, 2018-03-20 17:13Looking for some reviews, advise / recommendations for an anchor winch...
i have a 5.1m Quinny that I’m looking at mounting it to. Anchor well is a fairly good size and thinking of having it mounted in on a drum winch (some reinforcing will be required).
Any brand or model ideas would be great or other options for this would be great.

Electric Reel
Submitted by Deckie on Tue, 2018-03-20 10:43Anyone have suggestions for a mid priced electric reel.
Normally i dont use them nor thought about purchasing one but the situation has recently changed.
I am going under the knife this friday to repair torn ligaments & a small fracture in my right wrist.
The bad part is i am heading to Shark Bay for the school holidays with the boat and my hand will still be in a cast to minimise movement.
I thought a small economical electric reel could be the go so i dont have to wind the fish up, my son-in-law can do all the heavy stuff & leave me to just fish. (lazy hey).
Your suggestions will be greatly accepted as usual.

Broome advice
Submitted by Nick1712 on Mon, 2018-03-19 19:34Hi all,
Will be up in Broome from 24th April - 7th May, never visited the place so if anyone has any current info it would be much appreciated.
Don’t think i’ll be taking the boat up so mostly landbased, would be more than happy catching queenies/small trevs on the light gear if that’s the go?
Had a quick look at tides and looks like 2m early on, up to 8m at the end of the trip.
Thanks in advance
Nick

Just chasing some opinions on the best quality marine batteries.
I recently purchased a century marine pro 730. Had a few months and went to start the boat after not using for two weeks and was weak to kick it over. I dont have it hooked up to a trickle charger but not expecting. Iv rang bcf inquiring and they have said they have pulled the 730 due to poor performance. Anyway what reliabe batteries does everyone else run. Cheers

Shore Catch Photo Comp Entries
Submitted by Mick C on Sat, 2018-03-17 20:58Shore Catch, well Hutch, is currently running a FB photo comp to see what people are catching using our products. Below are the entries to date, and it is good to see the diversity of applications for our quality burley and bait.
I thought you might like to see the images, and you can also enter by commenting below with an image and description. The prizes are 10kg "mega burley packs" and it closes midnight tomorrow.
All entries will be scrutinised meticulously by the judges (Cal and Hutch), and I am a little suss on some of them. Your thoughts as to the best ones would help the judges, if you would like to comment.
The last one has a story, and I am sure just about everyone has seen the photo. Apparently, our customer was the son-in-law of the lady that caught the fish. Hutch had read that the fish was caught on a whole bonito, and he remembered someone had come into the shop that was going out with Reel Force with the visiting relatives, and bought the large whole bonito that we have in stock. He followed him up on social media, and yes it does seem to be the case. Some more investigation required, but it is initially included for the quality of the catch.

Inshore Dingy Fishing From Hillary's/Ocean Reef/Mindarie
Submitted by Don Logan on Thu, 2018-03-15 20:37Evening,
Can anyone give any advice on (general) areas to try from a dinghy in the northern suburbs? I've only been out in Cockburn Sound so far, but am wondering if it's worth having a go further up, as that's a lot closer to home. Just some general advice would be appreciated, it's only a 3.7m tinnie so i'm not asking for the coordinates to your prize offshore dhufish spots... I've been on the beach and seen Little Island, just north of Hillary's, anything going on round there? I'm not really fussed about species really, would just be nice to get out there on the water and possibly catch a feed.
Thanks

Gurnard Tool
Submitted by Dale on Wed, 2018-03-14 17:02just reading Hezzy’s encounter with a gurnard and just thought I’d show you what I use with them, this tool is just over 12” long, I made it from 316 stainless and glued on a handle. But as you can see, you can either push down on the hook, or pull up on the hook, keeps the pinkies out of the way. It started out as a welding rod.

pot cradles
Submitted by Sea goat on Wed, 2018-03-14 13:45Hi guys.
this has been my first season pulling pots, so have just been lugging them up and hauling them on board, but given the metal bottoms sometimes when its a bit rough i have put a few scratches on the boat. was thinking of investing in one of these cradles....
firstly, is there a particular type anyone recocmends or are they all the same? any features i should loko for specificaly?
how are they installed? is it a diy job, or do you have to drill holes/weld stuff etc? ( i am not handy at all...except with a scalpel...)
and do they make things much easier?? was hoping so as a few more years of doing it this way and my back will be stuffed!.....or i will put a hole in the boat...
cheers!

3D mosaics vs sidescan location of fish and rendering of underwater terain
Submitted by squalis on Wed, 2018-03-14 11:51In response to many posts relating to the location of fish and sea floor detail it is important to understand the benefits and limitations of the different modes of search that current technology allows us regardless of manufacturer. Acoustic physics is the limiting factor in this situation . The reality is the best sea floor vision is in sidescan mode. The higher the frequency the sharper the image and as a result the most detail. The Hummingbird mega scan at 1200hz is the best at this but it has depth limitatations of 30 m max. For location of fish the lower the frquency the better. The 3d mode in any unit is a compromise, generally the 3d mode is better at fish location. For example Furuno dff3d unit is the best in the business for locating fish i have this unit installed on my boat and it is a game changer. It runs at the lowest frequency to do this, nothing else comes close but as a result its sea floor rendering is not the best at this setting. However it has the greatest depth application. Users must be aware of the best mode and frequency for thier desired search.
