Unofficial Fishwrecked Chatting Channel?
Submitted by Tradewind on Sat, 2014-02-08 22:23Heading out into the sound tomorrow for a relaxing fish and it got me thinking
Has anyone ever suggested an unoffical channel for 27mhz and VHF for chatting with other Fishwrecked members (Making sure you have dual watch on the emergency channel)
Always nice to check in with others while you're burleying up for waiting for a bite

Coil Assembly Replacement
Submitted by Italsistem on Sat, 2014-02-08 17:41Afternoon guys, am finalising the refurb of my old '81 Evinrude outboard and am chasing a new set of coil packs for it. I have the part number, but would anyone be able to point me in the direction of a dealer who would stock parts for an outboard of this vintage?
Location not overly important as I am in Butler so everything is far away anyways!
Thanks

New boat / rotto virgin
Submitted by Josh on Sun, 2014-02-02 21:53Hey guys
So I ended up upgrading my boat, closed the deal on Saturday, trailcraft Trailblazer 580 with a 115 merc 2st. Got it for 17k. Trailer needs work, hence the low price, but hull is sound (built in 2000) and had the engine checked out by mick from marine masters, and he gave me the all clear big tick.
So a friends family has a considerable size 35ft penned down in Mandurah, and they are headed to rotto for the weekend, and invited me to come along, relax in the luxury, go explore some bays then enjoy the night in one of their big double beds.
My thoughtwould be to leave nice and early 6ish from hillarys (closest to me) head over, (get someone to tow the trailer home for the night so my car doesn't get trashed) , stay the night then head back in the morning before the wind swings around.
My only reservation, being an inexperienced skipper in the ocean is seabreeze is showing a fair bit of wind all day on Saturday, about 20 knots, and I usually look for low wind to go out.
And the swell is saying about 1.5,which is in the old girl the upper limit ewhat I would go out in
What are your thoughts?
Asvice/wisdom appreciated

Boat Storage
Submitted by Broady on Wed, 2014-01-29 21:37G'day All,
Looking for current experience with boat storage that service the Woodies area. Searches have identified a few around, but chasing some real life feedback. Notice none are site sponsors.
Security is a key, I don't want to spend too long loading and unloading the boat outside of electronics and tackle. Want to be able to wash down in the area and access at odd hours (pre dawn or after dark). Don't mind traveling a bit further, it's already a 40min trip from home.
Boat and trailer is a touch over 7m.
Thanks.

Drum winch installation.
Submitted by iana on Mon, 2014-01-27 09:10This morning I began the journey of installing a drum winch. I have the "Stressfree mini NG", the name is wrong, its anything but stress free.
The first problem is where and how to mount it. The winch located in the anchor well OK room wise, but I decided the anchor well as it is, is not strong enough to take the weight of the boat at anchor say in a rough sea.
So I needed to strengthen it. I looked at using stainless RHS bolted about it, but decided that was too hard, and ugly. I then settled on beefing up the floor of the well with epoxy/glass.
According to the suppliers of the winch, I had to have a minimum of 45 degrees angle on the anchor rope to the winch for it to wind on the drum correctly.
This meant building up the floor of the anchor well about 40mm. I went and saw the girls at "Fiberglass & resin sales", and they advised me to use epoxy resin and plywood sandwiched layers.
I cut out triangles of marine ply, and layers of course weave glass cloth to suit. Because I brought ply that was only 6mm, I ended up with 5 layers of ply, and seven layers of cloth.
The girls emphasised temperature as a criticl factor, and as you know we then have had some blistering hot days.
This mornings w report was to be cool, so the wife and I got up at sparrow fart to begin.
I packed the inside of the bow area (under the anchor well) with ice, and also had a tray of ice to keep the mixed resin cool. Following the girls instructions (they also advised using ice to delay the curing), I wet the inside of the anchor well, previously ground down and cleaned, the first layer of mat, then thickened resin them a layer of pre coated ply. The operation went well, four more layers of ply and seven layers of cloth later.
Because the ply have warped a little, I have sat 5 bars of lead on the last layer.
Doing it this way, I have a large bonded area to the hull sides, and a ridged platform to sit the winch. This part of the operation went well, now I have the drain hole to finish off, and the bot holes for the winch to plug with resin as per the "West system" instructions.
After that its designing and making a suitable bow sprit.

Opinions on Upgrade
Submitted by jayce on Sat, 2014-01-25 22:03Hi All
I am in a bit of a dilema at the moment (albeit not bad one) and chasing some opinions from others.
My current boat is a 6.4m ali hardtop made by either Penguin or Star im not entirely sure. It runs a 140 yamaha 2 stroke has a HDS 5 sounder and HDS 5 GPS and 120L fuel capacity. Its a great boat for what i paid for it and was great as a first boat. The ride is good and is fairly stable at rest and the deck room is massive compared to others in its class.
The problem is i am at a point where i want a bit more from the boat to do some longer trips and over nighters like Abrolhos Islands and maybe the Montes.
I am looking at the following things in a boat.
300+L of fuel.
4 Stroke Motor
Much better electronics
Anchor winch.
My question is would i be better off doing these upgrades to my boat or would it effect its balance and stability adding the extra weight?
Or should i start looking for a new boat that has all of these features already? I think i could get away with all the mods for roughly 25K.
If i sold my boat now i would probably get around 20K for it so between that and the money i would use for upgrades i would have roughly 50 to spend on new boat.
Every ones opinion welcome.
This is a pic of my boat now so you know what i have to work with.

Registering boat trailers
Submitted by Ashen on Fri, 2014-01-24 17:51Hey guys
I know someone who is retired and wants to sell his 3mtr ally dinghy/motor/trailer for a very cheap price (less than $500). The dinghy seems to be in great condition and licensed, the motor is an Evinrude 6hp 2 stroker that is still running well and spits water etc.
The only thing is that the trailer is not licensed. However, it seems to be in good condition as well. Anyone know how much it'll cost to re-register?
Thanks

Fraser 590 cobia/all rounder opinions
Submitted by Paul_86 on Fri, 2014-01-24 15:58G'day all,
Just chasing anyone's opinions who either have had or been on or have heard anything about a Fraser 590 cobia/all rounder. The boat in question is a 2004. I'm mainly curious to know what it's like as a sea going boat, and comparing the ride to my current boat, a Quintrex 480 coast runner.
Any opinions are appreciated!
cheers Paul

Baron sportsman or 18' sharkcat
Submitted by Relic on Tue, 2014-01-21 09:55The question I have is whether to go with a Sportsman with a volvo inboard or a sharkcat with twin 130hp honda 4 strokes. I will be using the boat for fishing. I have heard good reports on the sportsmans as wll as the cats. I realize the cat will be harder on fuel but like the idea of the twin engines should one shut down. The sportsmans are legendary hulls according to the reports. I know its horses for courses but was wondering if anyone would care to give any reccomendations.

Rotto Moorings
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2014-01-20 12:55Hi guys
Going to Rotto in March for a mini break.
Been over there for many years younger than I am now, and having lived in Mandurah and for the last 6yrs Karratha havent been over to Rotto in my boat for years ++. Also have lost/sold the mooring(s) we had at narrow neck and geordie.
Question is can you hire moorings or are they still all private. If not where and how do you "Park" the boat. Is the "lanes" to the Bathurst side off the jetty still there where you can tie off, can you still pull up and stay at the pub jetty.
Or what other options are there.
Hoping for some help.

Engine problem and launching ethic
Submitted by BONO38 on Sun, 2014-01-19 15:24I flushed the engine for approx 5 minutes yesterday before went out this morning at Leeuwin. The outboard was running fine yesterday.
But when I tried to start the engine this morning, the outboard didnt start. It did try to start but couldnt wake up the outboard.
Luckily we were still at the ramp. We tried choking, checking the fuel line and everything seems to be in order.
As we really wanted to go out, we waited for 20 minutes and the outboard finally started and running fine for the whole day.
Other boaties adviced me to warm up the outboard for at least 10 mins on the ramp. If I do this at the furthest end of the ramp, I may held other people up and risk getting shout at.
I hadnt use the boat for at least a month but I did warm up the engine for 5 mins the day before we went out though.
My outboard is a honda 90hp( done 546 hrs) and last service was in Nov.
Any idea what went wrong?
Cheers mate

Sealing fuel tank fittings
Submitted by Browndog on Fri, 2014-01-17 17:15Hey FW crew. Just removed the old stainless tank from my tinny, and gone to twin Scepter 25L plastic tanks. The plastic tanks have a composite 1/4 npt female fitting, to which I have added a brass 1/4 npt 90 degree m/f elbow, and a brass Yamaha quick connect fitting. What's people's opinion on the best way to seal these?
A quick check shows fuel seeping between the brass/composite join and also the brass/brass. I don't want to over tighten and crack the composite part. Will Teflon tape (like plumbers use) be OK, or some type of loctite product?
Cheers,
BD

Portable Shade Ideas - 6 metre Boat
Submitted by trueblue_10 on Sun, 2014-01-12 21:06Looking for ideas and some photos on ideas on a cheap but practical solution to provide shade from my Bimini to the Back of the boat on a 6.1 metre Cuddy Cabin Boat (Quintrex).
This is to keep sun off the family when over mainly in rotto swimming and sitting around in the back of the boat having a few drinks etc as the Bimini is not sufficient for that.
I was thinking it has to be some thing I can attach to the back of the Bimini and pull to the Transom but suspend in the ait via poles at the back possibly in the rod holders. I am sure someone out there has set up something on this??

Extra shade from a T top bimini
Submitted by Goin_Fushin. on Thu, 2014-01-09 16:11I have lost my freedom and now the grommets want to come fishing too.
The t top gives a bit of shade but I want to add more so the kids don't get toasted.
Any ideas on how to achieve this with something that can be installed and removed easily and doesn't hinder deck/fishing space?
My boat is 5m, flat floor, basically all open, low rails back and front, centre console and T top bimini of course.
Any ideas greatly appreciated..

There are 2 of these that secure the access hatch thru from the cabin to the anchor but I cant locate them anywhere.
I did source some locally a few years ago from a place that was recommended on here but buggered if I can remember where it was.
I think it was a small factory unit up malaga way from memory but who know it could have been oconnor.
If anyone knows of a place that carrys all sorts of window hardware your help will be greatly appreciated.
