Boat trailer over pit
Submitted by Bluedog on Mon, 2014-03-10 15:54Hi All,
For any of you who have taken a boat trailer over the pit at a DOT Inspection Centre(not private business ones), did you take it over with the boat on the trailer? The private ones I know dont mind the boat on, I am just wondering if the DOT ones are as lenient as I want to take mine over tomorrow.
Cheers.

Noble Super Vee Post 2008
Submitted by Tmacca on Mon, 2014-03-10 11:31G'day Guys
Upgrading to a bigger boat again after forever in a 5mtr c/c.
Have been looking at the barcrushers a lot (6.1HT) but am very interested in the noble boats but have read a few disturbing things about the ones made after 2008 in china.
Anyone own a china built one that can give me some info and/or reassurances!
Cheers

Alutech??
Submitted by craig scott on Sun, 2014-03-09 16:20Hi guys,
I've done a reasonable amount of searching on the Alutech scorpion boats, not a lot of info, especially real world experience.
Anyone here have one? How does it go, especially in the rough stuff.
They're not the prettiest things, but they look to me to be an awesome boat in the 5m cc configuration.
Cheers, Craig.

Funny purple mould
Submitted by fuzzy79 on Fri, 2014-03-07 19:38I am looking at buying a second hand boat and it has this funny purple mould in various places. Has anybody seen mould like this before? Is it easy to get rid of? If you use Exit Mould and scrub it, will it all come off, or will it leave a stain? Any other suggestions for getting rid of it?

Stainless Steel Screws in Aluminium Boat
Submitted by trueblue_10 on Wed, 2014-03-05 08:16Looking for some advice. I had to remove my wooden/carpet floor boards on my aluminium quintrex to get to the fuel tank and fix a problem with the hose. The flooring was held down by heaps of Stainless Steel 10g screws. Some were hard to get out.
Anyway I screwed new marine grade screws (No 318 I think) back in to hold down the flooring. They fasten the floor to the top parts of the boat aluminium frame. Should I have used something on the end of the screws to prevent any reaction/corrosion etc. I have read and heard that the stainless steel screws may react with the aluminium where they screw in??

fuel filter/ water separator - bulb question
Submitted by Paul H on Sat, 2014-03-01 09:17New Yammie 4 stroke being fitted to boat Tuesday week, going to run the fuel line through a filter/water separator for added protection for injectors etc.
Fuel bulb would best be fitted between the filter and motor would it not??? (rather than between tank and filter).

When is a tinny no longer a tinny?
Submitted by tantrum on Wed, 2014-02-26 16:46I know this may sound like a stupid question but what size does a tinny become a runabout? Or when do they become "open boats"... I've seen some up to 6 mtrs plus that would handle some decent water conditions.
the reason I ask is in some threads some people say certain areas are not suitable for a tinny so it lead me to ask what a tinny is by definition.
My thoughts where in the ball park of 4.2 mtrs and below but I have a quintrex 460 dory and side by side with most runabouts of similar size I would consider it to be quite a capable little vessel ( obviously weather and experience permitting).
im sure there's some old salts on here that could clear this up for some of us newer guys to boating.
cheers.

Snapped cable steer thinking of going hydraulic - advice please
Submitted by Adonis on Mon, 2014-02-24 12:39Hey guys, went out on Sunday and the cable on the steering snapped before I got to the first fishing spot, pissed off was an understatement.
I can afford to go hydraulic although I am a tight arse I was going to just replace the cable, however after reading a bit I think i'll be going hydraulic. I have an 18 footer with a 80 yami 4 stroke, any recommendations on what brand and where to get one installed in perth or are they relitively easy to install?
Any help would be great.
Cheers,
Pete

350 chev issue
Submitted by therock on Sat, 2014-02-22 17:06Had engine start to misfire and spit and fart after about 20 mins today.
Worst of it had to come back from nearly getting to rotto at 5 knots, only on best glass out day of ,year with biggest party of year on rotto and back in driveway chucking a sad. Wo
Luckily i got home but would only run at 5 knots without breaking down. Changed all plugs quckly hoping to get back out and across and beat wind and then engine wouldnt fire at all. Turned over no worries but no ignition.
Anyone have any ideas on what the fix is or problem..

Repowering - Quick Question
Submitted by JoRn on Fri, 2014-02-21 15:37After building my first boat last year, i fitted a brand new Suzuki 4 Stroke 140 hp.
I did a few things wrong here
1) brought a xl shaft when i didnt need it
2) tried to save some $$$ and brought the 140hp instead of 175hp ( as suggested by JNG who did the same thing few months back)
Anyway, ive been offered a brand new Yamaha 175 HDPI for a very good price.
What are the PROs and CONS of moving from a 4 stroke to 2 stroke?
I need to provide a response ASAP and dont have time to do my research.
and how much do you think i could get for my Suzuki? its done 110 hours.

Vhf radio
Submitted by Josh on Thu, 2014-02-20 11:46G'day fellas
Thinkingof getting a Vhf radio for the boat, it did come with a 27mhz old radio, circa 2000, which does work. But is it better to put in a Vhf? I did a search on Vhf vs 27 mhz and it seems a little like the old etec vs 4 stroke debate, that's not what I'm after.
I am just looking for some advice based on experience about which Vhf to get, I'm thinking of leaving in the 27 and putting in a Vhf beside it. Is it worth upgrading the 27mhz to a more recent model?
Just wanting to be safe out there.
Also any Vhf / 27mhz to steer clear from? I did have a gme gx300 and it hardly worked at the best of times.
Cheers

price opinions on custom console?
Submitted by Joodles on Thu, 2014-02-20 09:01Some of you may remember a post I put up of the console conversion project I took on a couple of years ago now. Well due to current circumstances I need to sell it but as it's a custom job I'm a bit unsure of an asking price. Could I have your opinions please boys on what you think would be a fair listing price.
A few features -
18ft fiberglass Mustang 1800
1998 model Evinrude 90 fuel injected 2stk approx 150hrs
Near new Dunbier trailer
2011 conversion & refit
Navman & Lowrance combo units, Navman radios
Plenty of other bits n pieces but thats the basic run down.
Link to previous thread - http://fishwrecked.com/forum/console-conversion-project-complete
I have nothing to hide and will show a potential buyer anything they want to see.
What do you reckon?

Roller or V Bow stop?
Submitted by Dingbat on Wed, 2014-02-19 13:25Hey folks, been a member for a while and found nearly all my answers in the search (and there is some great info etc), but not this one, and this is my first post.
Have a 6.8m glass mono hull boat and the trailer is currently set up with a roller bow stop (came with it), but after having the boat a couple of years now and been towed up and down the country, the gel coat has some damage, but moslty been worn off by the roller and now the glas is exposed.
2 questions, I suppose.
1 - Is having a V shaped bow stop better (will cause less wear/damage) than a roller - or not?
2 - Is it better to have the bow hard up against the roller/V when transporting - or is it best to have a gap so the bow only comes up against the roller/V on bumpier journies? I suspect not having it up hard allows for more damage???
I suspect there will be some differeing opinions, but just looking for the best approach and you experiences.
Thanks in advance

MERCURY 150HP 4STROKE
Submitted by NORUN NOFUN on Wed, 2014-02-19 10:56Just looking to see if anybody on here is running the new Mercury 150hp four stroke.
I like the reviews, but what is interesting is the capacity of the engine at 3ltrs.
For such a big displacement, and low hp, imo would equal good longevity.
Thanks for any feedback

All OK with starting.

Boat wiring - switch panels/fuse boxes/bus bar
Submitted by ctan1968 on Thu, 2014-02-13 20:48Hello all,
I am in the process of installing an all round white light to my boat.
I currently have an 6 switch panel (with red light in each rocker) and a fuse strip with a row of spade fuses and what looks like a bus bar. My sounder, GPS and radio don't use a switch. As this boat was wired before, I'm trying to work out the method for this madness. When I get the new all round white light it is just simply going to have a + and - wire from it.
The switches currently serve:
1. nav lights
2. bilge pump
3. bait pump
4. accessory (cigarette adaptor)
5. anchor light
6. cabin light
I would like to connect it up to the nav lights so all 3 lights will come on with the flick of the switch as I have no more spare switches.
Any help would be appreciated
Chris

fuel consumption - rottnest swim
Submitted by randall df223 on Thu, 2014-02-13 20:42After some advice....
I am supporting a solo swimmer next weekend in the rotto swim. The fuel tank is full (110 litres) and I'll have a 20 litre jerry can as backup. I run a 75hp honda four stroke on a 5m plate ali boat.
I have read reviews online that suggest these motors consume about 10 litres an hour at 4000rpm and that certainly fits in with my experience. 4000rpm gives me about 17 knts in ideal weight / weather conditions.
What I am not sure about is fuel consumption at idling revs for long periods. The boat will be light, only 2 POB, but we could be cruising for one hour and idling along for almost 8 - 9 hours.
Our return trip will be cruising back to hillarys with 4 POB plus a kayak.
Has anyone had any experience in this situation and how does the fuel consumption compare idling to cruising.
I am thinking 130 litres should get me to rottnest and back no worries???
Thoughts?

Two stroke or Four stroke??
Submitted by Paul H on Wed, 2014-02-12 13:17Not looking to start the usual but have more of a specific ?
Considering repowering
Looking at the Yammy F70A fourstroke.
Also considering a Yammy 90hp two stroke - most likely will get the four as quieter and less fuel. Holeshot better with the 2 stroke but this is not a huge issue for me the 4st will push it along fine anyway (and top speed will be faster than the current motor which is getting close to its useby)
Weight is roughly the same and not an issue.
4 stroke definitely better on fuel and quieter.
My question is I sometimes don't use the boat for long periods so in this regards are there any problems with the 4 stroke sitting idle for periods between use - is stored elsewhere so no always very practical to just give it a run on the muffs now and then.
Cheers

Marine Safety Pod
Submitted by Refty on Mon, 2014-02-10 16:05Upgrading my safety equipment including a Marine Safety Pod.
They look like a good idea having all safety gear in a waterproof container with compartments for flares, epirb etc.
Trouble is, my McMurdo epirb won't fit through the opening.
Not knocking the idea, just might need a little refinement.

Non Starting Issue
Submitted by Italsistem on Mon, 2014-02-10 13:36Gents, further more to my earlier post regaridng replacement coil packs for an '81 35hp Envinrude I am at somewhat of a loss.
Originally when I got it - started sweetly first time you turned the key. Unfortunately due to many many reasons the project had to be shelved for 18 months. In that time i would regularly turn her over and let run for a sustained period just to keep everything relatively fresh.
Fast forward and I relocated the tub and it didnt get started for a few months, no worries replaced the battery, cleaned / reocnditioned the carb, stripped the top down and gave it a good clean. Now though she wont start! With a new fully charged battery it will limply turn over repeatedly however will not fire. However, i removed the plugs (kept in their leads earthed) to check for spark and she will turn over and run off the starter and battery as normal, not a drama in the world, yet again when the plugs are back in back to the original limping?
It has power to everything and all earths are clean, battery cables are new and connections are good - i am at a loss as to what to look at next?? Any suggestions would be fantastic at this stage. I am quite handy with working on things and reluctant to call in mechanic to look at it but if it comes to that then so be it!
Thanks
Jarryd
