banging my head against a wall - dealership woes - Update - the saga continues
Submitted by Paul H on Thu, 2014-03-20 17:52Picked up my boat a week or so ago with a new Yammy 70 fitted by a large well know Adelaide dealership (not going to name them but they have lost my business - ps obviously not a site sponsor). booked it in for Tuesday/Wed but not ready till friday aft. Oh well I can wear that. Pick it up Friday into the water for a test run - no probs so far. Take it back to Wallaroo (150km trip). refit sounders, radios etc and all the gear. come home work for a week and back up there yesterday. Bit of an inspection found a small hole in the transom wall which they missed sealing, seal it. Check some more another hole on the inside of the transom not sealed properly - seal it. Out for a run start getting some rattle at 3500rpm back on shore locate lose hose rattling against the cowling - no real problem, washing down and note the engine well is filling up and not draining. check the drain hole and yep, they mounted the motor on a slab of plastic against the transom (no prob in itself) but did not drill a hole through it for the drain - it sits right under the motor and no access. Bloody useless. rang them and spat it, drag boat back to Adelaide and leave it with them to fix, will have to collect it tomorrow after work and drag it back up to Wallaroo. Why do you have to check the work of supposed professionals? What if I didn't know what to check for? What if I found this in two weeks 750km away in smoky bay? What if I found this when coping a wave over the back in 2m swells? Thanks for listening to my blowing off steam. Next (20hr) service is free, it will be the last time the boat goes there unless for a warranty problem.

I/O Diesel legs/jets
Submitted by Vinesh87 on Wed, 2014-03-19 17:31I am looking at a Diesel inboard for my next boat(Maybe but probably not)
The question i have is:Are there any sterndrive legs ( bravo, alpha, Yanmar 6LPA or any other) that have the ability to come right out of the water. Incase its a very shallow launch to drop the boat on the sand? Or to skim across that super shallow reef?
Add jets to that list!
Happy to hear anything else about Diesel inboards vs twin?
Cheers,
Vinnie

Handy tip - changing tyre on trailer
Submitted by jarrid on Sun, 2014-03-16 08:41Hi, just thought I would pass on a handy tip I got from my brother for changing tyres on a dual axle trailer should you get a flat. I had a piece of hard timber cut at an angle which I can drive up on. When the front or rear (if reversed) tyre goes up on the timber it allows the other tyre to get off the ground enabling the change. My trailer has torsion suspension and you can see in the photo that there is still enough height. Would just be a case of making the timber up to suit. It is cut at 2:1 as 1:1 just pushed it along rather than allowing the trailer to drive up.
Much easier than jacking up. And I have another piece to go back to back with it if required.

Bilge pump switching.
Submitted by iana on Thu, 2014-03-13 17:51Just after opinions re wiring the bilge pumps for a trailer-boat. Off the shelf switch panels have "manual-off-auto". My thoughts are that it should be auto always on and manual override, I.e. the pumps are wired so that they are always on via the float switch, but the float switch can be over ridden either by a switch or via a normally on relay. Off course the master battery switch turns off everything.
Now a boat which has a mooring and stays on the water would be different.
It is that the manual-off-auto system could lead to the bilge pumps being off and unnoticed.

6mtr new boat quotes
Submitted by Tmacca on Wed, 2014-03-12 21:10G'day again guys , just wanted some thoughts on prices for new boats. Got a quote for a 6.1 westy open hard top (150 honda) was right up there , around 87gs. Got one for the 610 and 670HT barcrusher (140 suz/175 suz ) and the westy was very close to what I was quoted for the 670HT which surprised me. Also one for a Mclay 610 HT was 57 with no motor. Any thoughts about which one you would get , friggin lot of money!!!!! Haha

Boat trailer over pit
Submitted by Bluedog on Mon, 2014-03-10 15:54Hi All,
For any of you who have taken a boat trailer over the pit at a DOT Inspection Centre(not private business ones), did you take it over with the boat on the trailer? The private ones I know dont mind the boat on, I am just wondering if the DOT ones are as lenient as I want to take mine over tomorrow.
Cheers.

Upgrading to a bigger boat again after forever in a 5mtr c/c.
Have been looking at the barcrushers a lot (6.1HT) but am very interested in the noble boats but have read a few disturbing things about the ones made after 2008 in china.
Anyone own a china built one that can give me some info and/or reassurances!

Alutech??
Submitted by craig scott on Sun, 2014-03-09 16:20Hi guys,
I've done a reasonable amount of searching on the Alutech scorpion boats, not a lot of info, especially real world experience.
Anyone here have one? How does it go, especially in the rough stuff.
They're not the prettiest things, but they look to me to be an awesome boat in the 5m cc configuration.
Cheers, Craig.

Funny purple mould
Submitted by fuzzy79 on Fri, 2014-03-07 19:38I am looking at buying a second hand boat and it has this funny purple mould in various places. Has anybody seen mould like this before? Is it easy to get rid of? If you use Exit Mould and scrub it, will it all come off, or will it leave a stain? Any other suggestions for getting rid of it?

Stainless Steel Screws in Aluminium Boat
Submitted by trueblue_10 on Wed, 2014-03-05 08:16Looking for some advice. I had to remove my wooden/carpet floor boards on my aluminium quintrex to get to the fuel tank and fix a problem with the hose. The flooring was held down by heaps of Stainless Steel 10g screws. Some were hard to get out.
Anyway I screwed new marine grade screws (No 318 I think) back in to hold down the flooring. They fasten the floor to the top parts of the boat aluminium frame. Should I have used something on the end of the screws to prevent any reaction/corrosion etc. I have read and heard that the stainless steel screws may react with the aluminium where they screw in??

fuel filter/ water separator - bulb question
Submitted by Paul H on Sat, 2014-03-01 09:17New Yammie 4 stroke being fitted to boat Tuesday week, going to run the fuel line through a filter/water separator for added protection for injectors etc.
Fuel bulb would best be fitted between the filter and motor would it not??? (rather than between tank and filter).

When is a tinny no longer a tinny?
Submitted by tantrum on Wed, 2014-02-26 16:46I know this may sound like a stupid question but what size does a tinny become a runabout? Or when do they become "open boats"... I've seen some up to 6 mtrs plus that would handle some decent water conditions.
the reason I ask is in some threads some people say certain areas are not suitable for a tinny so it lead me to ask what a tinny is by definition.
My thoughts where in the ball park of 4.2 mtrs and below but I have a quintrex 460 dory and side by side with most runabouts of similar size I would consider it to be quite a capable little vessel ( obviously weather and experience permitting).
im sure there's some old salts on here that could clear this up for some of us newer guys to boating.
cheers.

Snapped cable steer thinking of going hydraulic - advice please
Submitted by Adonis on Mon, 2014-02-24 12:39Hey guys, went out on Sunday and the cable on the steering snapped before I got to the first fishing spot, pissed off was an understatement.
I can afford to go hydraulic although I am a tight arse I was going to just replace the cable, however after reading a bit I think i'll be going hydraulic. I have an 18 footer with a 80 yami 4 stroke, any recommendations on what brand and where to get one installed in perth or are they relitively easy to install?
Any help would be great.
Cheers,
Pete

Repowering - Quick Question
Submitted by JoRn on Fri, 2014-02-21 15:37After building my first boat last year, i fitted a brand new Suzuki 4 Stroke 140 hp.
I did a few things wrong here
1) brought a xl shaft when i didnt need it
2) tried to save some $$$ and brought the 140hp instead of 175hp ( as suggested by JNG who did the same thing few months back)
Anyway, ive been offered a brand new Yamaha 175 HDPI for a very good price.
What are the PROs and CONS of moving from a 4 stroke to 2 stroke?
I need to provide a response ASAP and dont have time to do my research.
and how much do you think i could get for my Suzuki? its done 110 hours.

Vhf radio
Submitted by Josh on Thu, 2014-02-20 11:46G'day fellas
Thinkingof getting a Vhf radio for the boat, it did come with a 27mhz old radio, circa 2000, which does work. But is it better to put in a Vhf? I did a search on Vhf vs 27 mhz and it seems a little like the old etec vs 4 stroke debate, that's not what I'm after.
I am just looking for some advice based on experience about which Vhf to get, I'm thinking of leaving in the 27 and putting in a Vhf beside it. Is it worth upgrading the 27mhz to a more recent model?
Just wanting to be safe out there.
Also any Vhf / 27mhz to steer clear from? I did have a gme gx300 and it hardly worked at the best of times.
Cheers
Josh

price opinions on custom console?
Submitted by Joodles on Thu, 2014-02-20 09:01Some of you may remember a post I put up of the console conversion project I took on a couple of years ago now. Well due to current circumstances I need to sell it but as it's a custom job I'm a bit unsure of an asking price. Could I have your opinions please boys on what you think would be a fair listing price.
A few features -
18ft fiberglass Mustang 1800
1998 model Evinrude 90 fuel injected 2stk approx 150hrs
Near new Dunbier trailer
2011 conversion & refit
Navman & Lowrance combo units, Navman radios
Plenty of other bits n pieces but thats the basic run down.
Link to previous thread - http://fishwrecked.com/forum/console-conversion-project-complete
I have nothing to hide and will show a potential buyer anything they want to see.
What do you reckon?

Roller or V Bow stop?
Submitted by Dingbat on Wed, 2014-02-19 13:25Hey folks, been a member for a while and found nearly all my answers in the search (and there is some great info etc), but not this one, and this is my first post.
Have a 6.8m glass mono hull boat and the trailer is currently set up with a roller bow stop (came with it), but after having the boat a couple of years now and been towed up and down the country, the gel coat has some damage, but moslty been worn off by the roller and now the glas is exposed.
2 questions, I suppose.
1 - Is having a V shaped bow stop better (will cause less wear/damage) than a roller - or not?
2 - Is it better to have the bow hard up against the roller/V when transporting - or is it best to have a gap so the bow only comes up against the roller/V on bumpier journies? I suspect not having it up hard allows for more damage???
I suspect there will be some differeing opinions, but just looking for the best approach and you experiences.
Thanks in advance
