Fuel Tank Options
Submitted by Browndog on Sun, 2014-01-05 16:22Hey guys, had a quick search but couldn't really find the info I was after. I'm looking at replacing the dodgy fuel tank that came with my 5m plate ally runabout. Its a portable steel unit with a breather that leaks fuel and no guage, I'm sick of the fumes so its gotta go. A quick rough check on the measurements tell me it's around about 46L capacity, (but if it's filled it leaks every time the boat rocks), somehow I always thought it held more.
The best option I guess is an underfloor tank, so I pulled up the carpet at the back of the boat looking for an inspection hole or something but it seems to be solid ally, no way of telling what's underneath. Is this normal or should there be a removable patch somewhere? Underfloor tank would free up much needed deck space for fishing. Any ideas on rough cost (impossible to tell for sure until you get started)??
Plan B would is a couple of plastic portable tanks like the 22.7L units, maybe even three for the extra capacity and leave one at home if only going inshore. Or perhaps a slightly larger plastic tank and then a 22.7L for extra capacity when needed. Clearly these will be the cheaper option, (at around $180-$250 all up including fittings) but will still take up deck space.
Just wondering if it's worth going to the hassle of cutting open the deck for a fuel tank, or if I should just go the portable tanks? Plan C would be sell and buy another boat, but Mrs Browndog won't like that idea!
Cheers for any input.

Hds 9 install
Submitted by helixx on Sat, 2014-01-04 17:29
I don't need to know how shit my trailer is. That's the next fix.
Hey guys,
Long time listener first time caller.
I received a HDS 9 touch from Santa (bias boating) looking for any tips with install.
In particular, the structure scan skimmer destructions say to mount within 1ft of sounder transducer.
How close is too close? Obviously there's a minimum with turbulence in mind.
Any photos of setups would be appreciated.
Any other tips appreciated.
BTW. It's on a 5.5 ally plate boat

johnson 150 problem
Submitted by baddog35 on Thu, 2014-01-02 16:44I have 1994 Johnson 150 v6 that was overcharging batteries. it was showing 17-18v on voltmeter and then panel board shut down all the electrics on boat. I did some research and turns out it could have been rectifier/regulator so I have replaced this (not a cheap fix)!
I then took the boat down the river and it was all fine again, however, we took it out again yesterday and when I opened up the throttle it started overcharging again and all electrics shut down again.
After about 5 mins they came back on and all was well so we headed home and it all seemed fine but opened throttle again and same problem.
So it cruises along at about 20knts and everything is ok but any more and it starts to play up, so has anyone had any thing like this happen to them or know what it may be?
Also will anything else be damaged ie power pack etc because of to higher outage?
1986 50HP Johnson Maintenance Questions
Submitted by BradG on Wed, 2014-01-01 22:56Hi guys, I have a few questions about servicing my outboard.
- Are there any cheap ways to replace the seal on the cowling?
- How much oil does a gear case roughly take?
- Are there any marine shops in Perth which sell spare parts for older outboards?
- How hot is the water supposed to be from the tell tale? Last time the water was cold-ish, this time was relatively warm (50-60deg?)
- Not sure when the outboard was serviced last. What should I replace apart from new spark plugs, gear oil and maybe a new impeller?
- I accidently went into shallow water and sucked up a fair bit of sand. Is it possible to backflush through the tell tale or remove it and clean it out? It was blocked until I cleaned it with a thin plastic tie but I think it may still have debris left in it. Could there be blockages elsewhere causing the water to be so warm?
- I noticed water pissing out of the top of the gear case where it bolts on. Would it be fine to leave this until I replace the impeller?
- My boat doesn't have an external fuel filter, would it be a good idea to fit one or would the internal one suffice?
Thanks in advance.

Aux.battery charging on Evinrude
Submitted by 4wood on Tue, 2013-12-31 14:51I have a 2004 200hp Evinrude that has done 76 hours (Model no. E200FPXSRB) (long story) I want to charge an auxillary battery from the motor. The manual shows the aux.battery charging outlet point but no information other than 'see your dealer' (and good luck with that) I have checked the outlet with an Amp meter and it is charging ok but when I revved the motor the charge rate went to 20 amps, my battery was down a bit. I need to know if this outlet is regulated, one would assume so if it was put there for that purpose but 20amps!?
Can anyone help.

Outboard rebuild?
Submitted by Ashen on Mon, 2013-12-30 20:37Hi guys
I've been a member on here for while now and have enjoyed reading most of the posts. A great bunch of people you guys are and the topics & discussions are very helpful and enjoyable to read. This is my first post on here and I need a bit of advice.
My current boat is a VOYAGER LTD 18.6ft half cabin. It is an incredible boat and I have decked it out with bimini/rocket launcher, EPIRB, Lowrance Elite 5DSI Sounder/GPS & Garmin 300c Fishfinder, and also heaps of other "cool" and useful things. The motor is a 1985 or 1986 Mercury Black Max 150HP V6. It was running great guns when I first bought the boat about a year ago. However, for the last 4 months or so I have not been able to start the outboard. I have spoken to a few people and they suggested cleaning the electrical/battery connections, which I did. Still no good. Have tried changing spark plugs and still no good. Although she was a good runner (when the outboard was running), I had trouble cranking the outboard. It would take about 5-8 cranks before the outboard fired up. Also, some of the wires on the outboard are "bare" meaning the protective insulation/cover has eroded?
Considering the outboard was a great runner, should I have her rebuilt or should I spend money on a "new" outboard? The outboard which I'm considering is a Johnson Ocean Pro 150 2001 model which costs about $6000. If I can have the Mercury rebuilt and running sweet for less than $2000, then I would go the rebuild and spend the savings on new toys for the boat! :)
However, I'm only a new skipper (12 months) so any advice on my outboard situation will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Leaking Boat
Submitted by dalaisc on Sun, 2013-12-29 17:40The old Chivers Safari is taking water. Bilge pump keeps it afloat but it is enough water to be a concern.
Looks like it is leaking from the back but it has an inboard motor which makes it difficult to get a clear view of the area.
Has recently had the motor and leg replaced so could be that the install was not done properly.
Not 100% certain that it is leaking from the back.
Any suggestions on how to find the leak. I am thinks that we may need to fill the hull with water.

Finished! - My bimini replacement
Submitted by randall df223 on Sun, 2013-12-29 14:40I needed to consider replacing my bimini as the old one is basically shot. Being a sailmaker in a previous lifetime, I have the sewing skills to do it myself. So I have sourced the heavy duty sewing machine, got the material and started. Phase One is to add a rear bimini covering the back deck. So I have introduced a rocket launcher. Grantartic helped with bending some alloy tube, and last night and this morning I made up the new rear shade. All fitted now. Phase Two will be a zip up 'sock' cover for the exiting forward bimini. Phase Three will be the replacement of the old bimini, which is now looking very old and shabby next to the new material of the rear shade.

Trailer Bearings / Axle Help
Submitted by chris raff on Sun, 2013-12-29 12:04Hi all , decided to get motivated and check ( buddy ) bearings on the tinny trailer . Jacked it up and found 1 side had a small amount of play the other none . Proceeded to take them apart to check for wear and to possibly replace or repack grease . Upon doing so , I discovered the side with a bit of play had the normal two shoulders on the spindle yet the opposite spindle just one .. Time for a beer break as I had to ponder .. any excuse , anyway currently thinking it might be a factory fault as both rear bearings sit flush at the first shoulder it just takes a little encouragement to get the rear plastic seal on the single shoulder side .
I've taken a pic of the worst bearing and the rear seals looked fine but I'll replace all those anyway .. off to Martins Trailers tomorrow for bits .
Questions - Thoughts on axle spindle
- How much if any play is acceptable ? as the bearings and hub races didn't look too bad .
- There was grease spatter inside both rims , I presume from over filling yet both rear seals are intact in good condition ?
Doing my apprenticeship on the tinny then I'll do the bigger trailer , so any advice would be much appreciated .. Please find some pics for your perusal .
Thanks in advance , regards Chris

1997 evinrude ocean pro
Submitted by D2ky on Fri, 2013-12-27 08:34Hi lads,
Recently I have bring the boat out for quite a few times over the Christmas holiday. I realise some part missing on the outboard. It is some kind of stone look that is mounted between the middle leg n bottom leg. Can anyone tell me what is that part for and will it effect the function of the outboard without it. Any information is appreciate.
thanks in advance

westerberg owners... 16ft or 18ft for solo fishing offshore Perth?
Submitted by stevebw23 on Sat, 2013-12-21 21:08Hi Guys, i'm looking at downsizing to a small plate ally boat for fishing up to 60m depths off Perth. I like the look of the Westerbergs due to their solid design and have heard good reviews about them on Fishwrecked about their ride/build quality. My question is to all the Westy owners out there is would 4.6m (16ft) be safe/comfortable enough for Perth offshore waters or would i be better off going with a 5.5m (18ft)? I plan on doing a lot of solo fishing trips and would prefer the smaller size for launch/retrieving. I also want something that will get me offshore a fair way, possibly out as far as rotto on a decent day. I have a few years experience fishing offshore but that's been on a lot bigger boat (23ft glass). Any opinions or info would be great as i'm currently looking to buy one.
cheers,
Steve

Throttle Issue
Submitted by tcarroll on Wed, 2013-12-18 11:24Hi there,
I have just purchased my first boat, a 4.75m Qunitrex Bayhunter. The last couple of weekends i have taken it out for a spin just to give it a run around and to get used to. There seems to be an issue with the throttle. I can cruise steady at 8 knots, but if i try to give it a bit extra to get to around 12 knots, it continues to increase in speed, gets to about 17 knots for a minute or so and then loses power and drops back to about 5 knots.
Does anybody know what this might be?

Losing power under load - problem solved
Submitted by tiimmbo on Mon, 2013-12-16 19:53Went out Sunday and didn't even make it out of the harbour. Engine started fine, revs fine in neutral but once over 3000 revs in gear loses power under load. Has new plugs, fuel lines all seem ok, just seems it wants to kick on but splutters and drops back. Didn't stall at all just lack of power. Can't get it in for service until jan 2 either so anyone got any ideas that may solve my problem. My guesses are spark issue/ carb issue / fuel issue but a bit stuck now. Have 3 weeks off work starting today as well so spewin to say the least. Any ideas appreciated.

how is the compressor handle with lots of movement, i imagined it be okay coz i never had any problems with it in my car 4wding.
without starting a debate, what would you guys recommend for the boat, it be in the cabin, so will be a fair bit of movement when transiting!
