Want to know more about our coast??
Submitted by Ewan on Tue, 2010-03-30 21:31As you might have read in Fishwrecked Reeltime (Issue 2 I think?) - there is more to the rocky coast than meets the eye!!
There is an excursion by the Royal Society of WA (a grand name for a bunch of people who are fans of WA)
Sunday 11th of April
9am - 12pm
Muderup Rocks, Cottesloe
Get down to Cottesloe and find out more about why our coast is so special -
Local science experts/legends Loisette Marsh (WA Museum), John Huisman (DEC) and Vic Semeniuk (RSWA) will explain the rocks and all the things growing on them on the shoreline and below it.
More details here: http://www.rswa.org.au/
The limestone tells a pretty interesting story of times gone by - it gives a pretty huge perspective on what sea level rise means for us, and (most importantly!) it provides us with places to fish from, and things to catch.
If you've ever looked at the patterns in the rock, or the shells embedded in it, or on it, or looked at the chain of islands and reefs up the coast and wondered why - these guys can definitely tell you!
All three are highly respected and experienced and have done much of the research along the WA coast, that is the basis of our scientific understandings of it today.
Loisette Marsh has an enormous wealth of knowledge on all the animals growing on the reefs, starfish, sea urchins, limpets and the like - she is very experienced in WA marine invertebrates - animals without backbones.
John Huisman is an expert on marine algae - seaweeds - known around the world. I shall, in particular, be asking him which ones I can eat!
Vic Semeniuk is a specialist in coastal landforms - he can tell us where past sea levels were and maybe where they will be, and how the coast came to look like it does.
It's quite a rare treat to have these three together in the field to ask questions of - I'm stoked! If you or your kids have ever pondered the why about our coast - this is the place to be...
Cheers,
Ewan

Where can i get good beach rods in Joondalup?
Submitted by Josh n on Tue, 2010-03-30 02:18I want to get some good beach rods (for the salmon). I have just moved to Joondalup and don't really know where any local shops are. I know of the "big" shops like BCF but I'd rather go to the local ones. Thanks in advance for any help also if anyone could recommend any good lures for salmon thanks.

Glad i'm just a dumbum taxpayer
Submitted by 7739ian on Sat, 2010-03-27 21:20I am really looking forward to the FW South West competition on the 10 th of April and having fished off the Cape with Damo i have faith in his seamanship -BUT - just in case something goes wrong i am at odds - do i break the law or do i follow commonsense? if i go out with him and we have a mishap, i will plummet to the bottom due to the weight of Government plastic in my wallet. Just to be out there i will have to have my 1. Skippers Ticket, 2. My boat fishing ticket, 3, My Drivers License, 4. Just in case - my all other fishing classes ticket. What a load of of inept stupidity - for all our taxes our government departments can't amalgamate all our rip off licenses onto one placcy ticket - why not? I am glad i have handed in my guns - yet another card and if i carried my Blue Card, Perkins Builders Induction card, Medicare Card and bank plastic - the list goes on. The State and Federal governments stiff us for so much money and they can't get their computers to talk to each other? - wasteful wallopers.

One of the best days of my life
Submitted by deepwater on Wed, 2010-03-24 23:05Alex my son has a big mole on his back and he has had it since he was born. In the last few weeks it has changed so we were off to the doctors as fast as we could go. Alex and vicky are in perth seeing a doc and got the good news yesterday it was all clear. As he is growing the mole is growing too so it looks bad, is what the doctor said. The better news is he is getting it cut off next month. The best news, i never have thought the worst, but it is always in the back of the mind. The relief was the best day of my life, that thing will be off my son and gone for ever.
Alex Nelson you are my little man

Finally the weather had a rest and let us out to the FADs.(Pic Posted)
Submitted by Decella on Mon, 2010-03-22 21:13Looked at the weather on Sunday and decided to giv Till a call for a fish today, FAD bashing. It wasn't the best of forecasts and the reliability of the weather man hasn't been up to scratch of late, but I thought stuff it I have a Stella to break in.
We left he ramp at around 0515 which was still dark. As we entered the sound I turned for the islands, going along it was hard to see through the window as the GPS and Sounder was giving off too much glare. I was looking at these two strange lights and wondering what they were as I was sure I hadn't seen hem before. As Till was sitting in the passenger seat he could see a bit better and alerted me to the huge cargo ship I was about to tackle. Hazard avoided we pressed on.
Got to the FADs and Till started throwing his weapon of choice out, and within minutes was hooked up, lovely! was the call.
Hook-up!
Till was holding the fish in the water for me to stop drooling over my new Stella 5000 and KGS-68M Smith set-up and get a cast away to his mates that were swimming with him (egging him to jump we thought).
Waiting for me?
Result!
Finally I got a shot off but to no avail. Next cast same result. While retrieving the third cast I started to think maybe they had shut down as there were a few around but no takers. The lure was nearly at the back of the boat when Whack!, a Dolly nailed it, F@#$%^& Awesome was the call and the little 5000 arked up and put the brakes on the bullet.
Yee Yaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
We caught approximately 8-10 Dollies and kept three (Till accounted for most), 2 small Tuna and 2 Undersized YTK. It was a very good day and I was extremely happy with the rod and reel set-up (mind you a big bull would be good on it) and look forward to testing it out in Exxy..
To top the day off we witnessed the storm front rip through Perth with a lightning show that had me shitting as we had to drive into it to get home. Wiil post the pics tomorrow.
Thanks again Till for spotting the ship, mind you I reakon we could have had him....................

Two wheels, one rod
Submitted by STONEY on Mon, 2010-03-22 12:09Hey guys, just thought Id jot down a quick G'day and introduce myself.
Im curently a land based fisho, mainly searching out the bream on my trusty old GSXR.As fishing is up there in my top five hobbies,I guess im quite lucky to be able to combine two into the one. Naturaly this reqires a very minimalist approch, and I find it takes my fishing back too the good old days of simplicity and fun. Most of my time over the years has been bait fishing for all sorts, but after a very slow learning curve,Im finally catching bream on softies with reasonable consistancy in the canning. As luck would have it my better half loves the out doors, and she is as keen as myself to get into yakking,so hopefully Ill be Up the creek WITH a paddle soon. lol
To date Ive caught a fair few diffrent types of fish, off the top of my head,Baldies, spanyards, tuna,Queenie or morwong, not sure on that one, pinkies, black snapper, spangled empror, shark, yellowfin bream, flattie, and a notable buff bream that took a mullie, all from steep point. In and around,or closer too the metro Ive caught Black bream, silver bream, whiting, herring, flattie, tailor, mulloway, leather jacket, pike, snook, dart, yellow tail, salmon and of coarse the dreaded blowie.
anyway, cheers guys, I look forward too learning alot from this site.
Sorry about my spelling and punctuation,Im a shocker lol.

Curious about the Leeman crayfishing situation please
Submitted by blackers-101 on Sun, 2010-03-21 21:00Howdy folks
About 12 months ago I was living in Leeman and became friends with some of the crayfishermen and since leaving the lovely place things have gone down hill for the cray fishing industry, not just Leeman but all fishing zones . Can anyone please tell me if there are any crayfishermen still working / living in Leeman please? I have lost contact with with friends up there as I am now living in Perth.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Extraction Vs Root Canal?
Submitted by JoeH on Fri, 2010-03-19 09:23G'day,
Anyone got any advise on this subject? I had a filling drop out of an upper molar, and have an infection at the base of the roots, so I have 2 options, extract the tooth, or root canal treatment.
I went to the dentist yesterday, and they x-rayed the tooth and assure me they CAN save the tooth, but it will end up costing around $2800.00 including a crown.
They numbed the tooth what they thought was enough, then started drilling the hole out, until they drilled through to a very much awake nerve which instantly caused a massive cold sweat/shaking agony. They then told me I'll need to have antibiotics to kill the infection, as that stops the aneasthetics from working properly, and left it at that for the next week!
Today my face feels like I've been kicked by a horse!
All my other teeth are OK, and plenty of people get along just fine with one or more teeth removed, so do I go for the expensive option, or the $200-$300 rip out job?
Any thoughts appreciated!
Cheers,
Joe

Boat Ramp Shenanigans
Submitted by Lamby on Thu, 2010-03-18 17:49I am unsure if this has been covered before but since witnessing a couple of humorous events down the ramp recently I am certain other members have some funny stories.
A couple of weeks back I watched a Plaka bounce down the ramp for a good 5m before coming to a stop another 5 from the water. Poor bloke had removed the safety and winch whilst waiting his turn to drop. Made even funnier was that he clearly had the new missus along for the day who watched on as if it was normal. I was offering a hand once I had tied off but poor bugger was too embarrassed and pushed her the rest of the way. Went flying past me 5mins later, wouldn’t of been the same story if it was glass

boat ramp
Submitted by bullwing on Thu, 2010-03-18 12:56Just wondering about the different boat ramps between Yallingup and Hamilin Bay, if any are suitable for a 24 foot fiberglass centre consol. The boat is a bit on the heavy side and I dont want to run into any problems.
