Boating maintenance tips
Submitted by PJAY on Sat, 2010-03-06 20:12Forum members,
this may have been raised before but below are some good tips for those new to boating....i'm still trying to find the windscreen wipers on my Quinnie??
This website is well worth a read as well.... enjoy.... http://www.seaschool.com.au/Boat%20Tips%2010%20-%20Launch,%20Recover,%20Anchor%20-%20Sea%20School%20240104.pdf
Boating maintenance is vitally important. If your car brakes down you can simply call for a tow truck. Out on the water, a breakdown can turn deadly. Proper maintenance and inspections can ensure many years of safe boating. Below is a list of weekly, monthly and yearly routine maintenance schedules.
Weekly:
Weekly tests should be done by the captain, before each trip out on the boat. These tests should focus on making sure the equipment needed for each voyage is working correctly. Be sure to check bilge pumps, navigation lights, bungs and washers, the steering column for stiffness and fuel level. Also make sure the radio is operating before heading out onto the water. You should also have a quick look around the boat to identify any potential problems or hazards.
Monthly:
Monthly maintenance should focus on checking engine oil levels, and other motorized equipment. Be sure to check the oil levels, monitor the ropes and lines for damage, oil the winch and check safety equipment for damage including lifejackets as well as the use by dates on flares. Give the boat a good clean and also check for any general signs of wear and tare. Inspect the blades of the propellor for damage and inspect all other electrical items such as windscreen wipers, engine tilt and anything else electrical.
Yearly:
Your motor should be serviced at least once a year or more depending on how much you use your boat. As the owner you should thoroughly inspect to exterior and interior of your vessel at least once a year. Look for cracks, chips, blistering, loose wiring, broken fittings and anything else unusual. If you cannot fix what you see be sure to raise the issue with your service agent before getting the boat serviced. Be sure to check grab rails and other fittings are secure and tightly fitted the the boats hull. Check the boats rollers to ensure they are running smoothly otherwise add grease as needed.
By abiding by these maintenance schedules, you will increase your chances of having many years of trouble free boating. Without proper maintenance you run a great risk not only to yourself but to your passengers as well. Be safe, and keep up on your maintenance and checks.

This month i am discounting the XT 100 Mackerel cooler box by $20.00. This discount now makes the monthly price $250.00. Great value. I have also gone to great lengths to invest in the best screws i can find for all boxes. I am in the process of changing all screws to marine grade stainless steel. What line to put on a reefmaster winch ?
Submitted by Paul N on Sat, 2010-03-06 12:51Just got a couple of used Alvey Reefmaster deck winches. Not sure what line to put on them. Have been told to use heavy ( 200lb+) mono backing and then fill it with 80 or 120lb sufix K - Braid. The K braid only comes in 200mtr lengths ( as far as I know ) and I was hopefully going to use the winches for deep water 200 - 500 mtrs in local water and off Exmouth . The only other line i could find in that sort of length that was not too thin to handle was dacron. If anyone uses a winch , what sort of line do you use or suggest. Any help would be great.

Just mounted the new toy a Lowrance 10HDS combo. After I mounted it I was in two minds whether to mount it again
. This thing is huge, but it fits nicely next to the 585. It is a bit hard to see out of the window now but who cares.
I have got the Platinum + card and it is just awesome. I could not be happier with the unit, easy to use, big sceen so I can have the same scale but see further on the screen, no waiting for pages to pop up as the unit can zoom in or out without having to change screens and accurate as. I have fitted the optional antenna which updates quicker than the internal antenna and it is spot on, as soon as I start turning the cursor on the screen starts the track immedeatley.
One other thing, was quoted $600 to fit it but I would say give it a go yourself and get a handy mate or sparky to hook it up as mounting and running the cable was easy as. With the coin I saved I got a remote search light for night fishing.
All I can say is AWESOME.......................

Xtreme Coolers = Xtreme Value and Service - Cheers!
Submitted by wazzbat on Wed, 2010-03-03 17:04Just thought I'd give a bit of a plug for one of the site sponsors - Extreme Coolers.
A few weeks back I was looking at getting an Ice Box for the old boy's boat and after just becoming a member of the site, I saw the add and gave Dave a call. He was very helpful going out of his way to show me what he had.
Went and had a look and was quite impressed but as I hadn't looked at any others yet, Dave told me to go and have a look around first in case I saw something I liked better. Well, after looking over the next couple of weeks, for the price he has these boxes at, I just couldn't compare anything else.
I ended up buying the 120L box which I took out for the first time over the long weekend and it does the job more than well enough! After a long hot dayout in the boat, just about all of the ice was still there (but unfortunately not many fish).
So if you are looking at getting an ice box then you should give Dave a call and go and check them out. He doesn't put any pressure on you to buy which is pretty rare these days.
And No... I don't know Dave from a bar of soap and he didn't give me any money or ask me to write this. I just thought he deserved a bit of a write up cause I am very happy with what I bought and was happy with the service I got!
Thanks Again Dave!

boat ramps were chocas
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Tue, 2010-03-02 22:33just wondering how your local boat ramp fared with so many boats out on the water. We got down to point peron around 6:15 and there was around 30 boats out there already, we got back in at 2 and the place looked like the parking lot at the royal show, cars and trailors parked wherever they could. i dont think you could have squeesed a mini into the area.

Finally the Triple F got out
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Tue, 2010-03-02 06:51After 8 months and a couple of probs with the boat we finally got out further than the 30mtr mark. Our first port of call was at a big lump that rises 10 mtrs where we have got big pinkies and dhuies from in the past, the fish were there alright but not the right ones . First up Sandy got a sweep then a wrasse then up came a blue devil, after a couple of drifts we decided to move out to some ground we havnt fished for over 12 months. First fish that came up was a queenie of around 2.5kg by me which was an ok start, after another drift nothing. We then moved a bit further north in the 90's and it started to pick up from there. Brenden picked up 2 b/bums that were reasonable then it was my turn , i got smashed and pulled up a 4kg pinkie that looked like it had done a couple of rounds with Mike Tyson, fair few battle scars and blind in 1 eye by the looks, even still it was a decent fish. It was quiet for Sandy apart from getting a few big hits. At one point she got hammered from something huge and dragged her line a bit then dropped it then i got smashed by we think the same fish, i gave it a good strike to set the hooks and all i felt was a dead weight , wasnt sure what to call it for , after heaving this weight up from 95mtrs we got a look , all i had on was 68oz of lead , the bloody fish wanted both baits and left me with Sandys rig attached to mine. After quite a few more big hits another small pinkie and a small queenie came up and then returned. By this stage Sandy was getting frustrated as She still had no decent fish to her name. On the last drift this all changed, first fish up for Sandy was a red at around 1.2 kg , great fish ,there is dinner. Shortly after her line went off again and after a good fight another red came to the surface that went 2.5kg.That was the day for us, we had our limit and had to get in to go to work anyway, the water had just about glassed off so it was a good trip in, back at the ramp by 2. Had a great day out there with the wind starting to drop at around 9:30 and ended up with no wind at all.

Full moon and bottom bashing???????
Submitted by biggerfish on Mon, 2010-03-01 19:46Just wondered how everyone did today, we went out around south west bank got two sized snapper two b/a and a few undersized duhies. Seems every time we go out bottom bashing on a full moon the fish dont seem to want to swallow the bait they tend to just pick at the bait even the fish we caught today didnt bite hard like normal they more or less just picked at the bait and when we hooked them it was just a lucky strike. All in all it was a great day out just good getting out on such a beautifull calm day, litle bit choppy till about 11 but after that it was like a mill pond. So how did everyone go and has any one else got any theories on full moon bottom bashing.
