G'day guys

Got back from work the other day and gone to use my Nikon d5000 and the autofocus wont work. I've gone through the destruction book to try to find the answer but to no avail. Pain in the arss to send it away but if I have to.....

A bit of a bi#@h Session

Not fishing related but realy peeved. Tonight on the way home from our shop we decided to get some Red Rooster for dinner. (first time in over 8 months.). we pulled up in the drive through and were served straight away , no probs, put our order in and one item not available so settled for something else. We went the BIG DEAL. Got home and opened the big box to find a piece of chicken about the size of a Quail. 2 chicken strips that were over cooked and an amount of cold stidgy chips that wouldnt have fed a baby (total count including ones that were 2cm long was 20 ). .   . Now i remember why we dont buy takeaway anymore but take home from our own shop. spent $30 on what would have been a feed for 1 , so much for their so called BIG DEAL

Broken canaopy frame

While coming back in on my last trip to the islands I noticed a crack in one to the pipes on the canopy framework and on closer examination there were a few more. By the time we got back in they were a little more than crack, more like breaks.

So off came the radio tray and cover so I could get the canopy off so Shippy could weld it up again.Out came the grinder to remove the top rail and lattice work, that in my mind was the probable cause of the latest cracks by the extra added weight on to the central frames.

The top rail and lattice was added early in the piece to help stiffen it up and after that the braces from the corners were added along with two short pbits to the top centre bar.

If it doesn't work this time its called "wipe the hands and dump it" going back to fishing in the sun.

Where to buy cheap outboard oils?

Hi there.

Does anyone know where to buy oils and plugs etc for an outboard service at the right price in perth. Is there some kind of warehouse?

When are you leaving Perth for the Exxy comp?

Just wondering which day and time you are leaving for Exxy? We will probably leave Gingers around 10PM on the 7th, we'll be on channel 40 UHF if you need a hand, we will be carring enough tools to do most emergency patch jobs.

help wanted - buying a welder

Any welders out there ? I am thinking of buying a mig welder for home use and bit of stainless steel welding for the boat. I have a stick welder but have never used a mig. I want to be able to weld thin tube like the stainess steel grab rails and bar work on boats . Do I need a welder with gas or will gasless do the job ? My understanding is I need gass but not sure ( depends on who i talk to ). If i need gas it is probably easier to hire a welder for a weekend and do all my jubs in one hit. Will the same welder do both stainless work and aluminium ?
Any help would be great.
Paul

Where is our Pommy mate?

Haven't heard anything from our pommy mate Roger Knife for ages, miss his reports and comments from the other side of the earth.
Could be everything is covered in volcanic dust or the sea is frozen over.

Vasectomy or not, that is the question.

Right, it's a painful subject I know.

We've got three kids, I'm 34, she's a touch older and that's it as far as adding to the worlds population goes.

The v word has been cropping up with ever increasing frequency, so quetions are:

Anyone had it done and have they had any bother with it afterwards?

Where in Perth can you get it, heard of some Snoeball guy in Nedlands, but he seems to offer only a certain type, anyone know of others?

This may be a bit embarrassing for some, I undersatand that, so if you want to PM me info that's fine.

I just need more info to make an 'educated decision'.

I do feel a bit funny though as it breaks one of my 5 essential life rules:

Never let anyone near down there with anything sharp

Surfer rides Shark

http://www.khon2.com/news/local/story/Close-Encounter-On-Kauais-North-Shore/-5D17XpNX0CNK3V9WqS92A.cspx

Rawlinson, 68, was
catching waves at the point in Hanalei Bay, Kauai Monday at about 4 p.m.
when as quick as greased lightning his peaceful afternoon turned into
every surfer's nightmare.

"All of a sudden I felt this
strike on the back of my board and it lifted me kind of up in the air,"
he said.  Rawlinson's surfboard had just been attacked by a large tiger
shark.

As he slid backwards what happened
next is as frightening as it is unimaginable.  Rawlinson ended up on the
back of the  ocean's most feared predator.

Surfs up.

ANZAC Post - Early

Please excuse me for getting in early, I may not have the opportunity to get in before our great day - ANZAC day. Members of my family no longer with us, have defended this great country in times gone by and I want to acknowledge them and all the other diggers past and those still with us. I am fiercely patriotic and cant help but think, when we are down and out at times and sometimes forget how lucky we are in this great country, one only needs to remember these people to get a true perspective of life as it is now.

Some of my earliest fondest memories involves ANZAC days being spent at parades and mixing it with the old boys. To my way of thinking they are the true national treasures and our day of rememberence is most definently one of the best, my most favourite days of the year.

Oh and if you are a returned serviceman / woman reading this, then I say a big thank you....  Smile

SP Rod

I am looking at getting a rod specifically for SP fishing from shore, i.e. walking flats etc. I figure I'd like to use about a  6kg outfit. I'd also like to get a set up for boat fishing SP's however realise that two rods would probably be the go (if a longer wand is required from shore)...I have been told recently that a fast action tip is more appropriate for casting SP's - I actually figured a slower tip would be better for casting distance?? I would appreciate your thoughts on an appropriate rod for these purposes Cheers Laughing   PS  I'm thinking of a

Certate to put on the rod/s.

Charter experiences GOOD or BAD

Dont know if anyone has discussed this before, i know there has been bits and pieces.     .. After seeing a couple of charter stories on here that seem to be a bit poor in catch and etiquette. What have been your best and worst experiences while out on a charter boat (dont need to name the boat or company) .  .. I have been out on a charter from hillaries a few times and never caught a thing so as far as metro charters go i probably never go again especially when you get a skipper that decided to take a couple of seasick customers into rotto which we lost around 1 hour of fishing time and he didnt even know how to get into the jetty as he ran aground about 5 times . ......  As far as charters from out of the metro i have been on one out from Shark bay a couple of times and had a total ball , The crew and skipper were great and they put us onto the fish wherever we went . each time we went we bagged out with big pinkies , spanglies, rankins and other types. I would recommend these guys to anyone .................

East Perth Stabbing near Windan Bridge

POLICE are calling for witnesses following an altercation which saw a 49-year-old man stabbed in the leg in East Perth last weekend.

Perth City Detectives said the man was walking along the footpath near Windan Bridge at about 10pm on Saturday night when the incident occurred.

It is alleged the man stopped to talk with three men who were fishing from the bridge, and was stabbed in the leg by one of the men following an argument that developed.

A couple came to the assistance of the victim.

Police described the offender as of East Asian appearance, aged between 30 and 40 years, medium build and with black thinning hair.

He was wearing a purple shirt and khaki cargo pants at the time of the attack.

Saying good bye to an old friend ............

I must admit that even though I hadn’t wet her hull for a while, it a really emotional moment for me to see her go to a new home.  She was the boat that took me out to the FADs for the first time here in WA (my first solo trip as well).  Her hull raised fish and gave me the opportunity to spill Mahi blood on her decks on our very first fishing trip out.

I still remember the day well, there was a Easterly blowing, which made for a nice ride out and we skimmed across the surface at 32 knots.  I remember how solid she felt, each time she landed after letting the prop see air and how enjoyable it was to have a dry ride all the way out to the FADs.  Even though this was my first fishing trip with her, I knew she would handle the conditions well and bring me home safely.  She did not let me down.

The family enjoyed going out with her as well, crabbing on the Swan and in the marinas

and one of my deckies even tried to test her patience but fighting a large bull dolly with a 9ft toothpick and 10lb line for over 45mins………..

We shared a few comic moments as well, such as backing her down the ramp, taking off the winch hook and chain and then wondering why she wouldn’t roll off the trailer.  Thank goodness there was no one there otherwise it would have been really embarrassing when I had to pull the trailer out and undo the back straps!

Another incident that sticks out was the time where I had just launched her, parked and walked down to the jetty before realising that I had left the keys at home.  She was pissed about wasting time getting the keys instead of getting out there and enjoying being on the water.

There were less then funny moments as well, like at the NOR Fishwrecked Comp, I lost the bungs, but still launched her and fished in the storm.  I knew that it would make little difference other then the decks being wet but figured the rain was going to make that happen anyway.  The only tense moment I had was when a wave broke over her, but thank goodness, for her more then adequate flotation - she stayed upright and all I had to do was to drive her forward to empty out the water a little faster.

Or the time where I was out at the FADs on another solo trip and the weather changed and it started blowing 25-30knots coupled with 4.2m swells - that was a day to remember - it was the first time I had caught a fish on a line without a hook!  A large Southern Blue had take a drift bait and it’s twin charged in with it’s mouth open to see if it could pick up some scraps and as luck would have it, it swam straight into the line and somehow got it twisted and tangled round it’s lower jaw!  Oh I got carried away – the wind and swells made for it a less then comfortable experience that day, but I knew the old girl would handle it well and once again she did and in style.  In fact as luck would have it, the wind turned to a Westerly and I got to fly in at 34knots!

Then there was the time up at Two Rocks.  We were out about 14 miles when a storm can in, talk about a wet day, no vis at all, thank goodness the snapper were on the bite but as we started releasing then the damn sharks started to hassle us non stop.

Yes she has provided a lot of very good memories and experiences but the time has come for us to go our separate ways.  I am sure that Paul and his family will enjoy owning her up in Karratha.

Bye – bye old girl. Sob!

Windfinder.com

For those heading to exmouth soon I have added north west cape to windfinder.com it's handy to know as learmonth and the cape can have very different winds. It should be available tomorrow.I've also added south murion island but that will be about a week before it's available.

Towing boats & covers

I was wondering I had a cover made up for the boat  while ago mainly for when its parked but I have been assured its towable, but I do wonder at 100kmph and the wind going over the covers how it would hold up. How does everyone tow the boat long distance ?  is it best to use the cover if its available  it would keep the crap out of the boat :) how about wind resistance tho ?.... I do wonder if a cover adds more of that hence more fuel for towing.

Salmon andpicket fences made of rods

over the last couple of days I've had an absolute ball yanking in Salmon myself and watching practically ever other bugger hook up as well at Meelup.

So many Fisho's lined up along the left-hand rocks  that it looked like a picket fence doing a Mexican wave as the Salmon rocketed thru... Nothing beats watching a kid land theit first Salmon. "I AM A WARRIOR!!!!!!" You can see it in their eyes.

Top marks to the blokes at Dunno's Sport n' Leisure and Ross or Rob? at Ranger Camping Busso for sorting out my busted rod tips . Nice to see old fashion service from these country stores. Top fish n' chips from the Leeuwin Take away half way between Duns & Busso.
