Fishing Discussion
Sydney in November
Submitted by gumbyconts on Thu, 2011-05-19 11:19Hi all,
Just wondering can point me in the right direction of where to fish in Sydney in early November.
I've never been there before, and I'll need to get around on foot and public transport.
There are obviously many places on the coast, within the harbour or Botany bay areas, but are there any sure spots that you can divulge? (catch and release only)
I would also like to give dam fishing a go if its not to hard to get to.
I have 6ft and 10 ft light spinning outfits so not going for anything too big.
It'll be mostly land based, but I might go on a charter if I have the funds at the time.
Thanks to those who can help!

Rod advice please
Submitted by danno on Wed, 2011-05-18 20:40Hey all
You might have seen my other post asking which is better for a reel the Seagate or the Stradic and after hearing a few bad things about the Seagate i thought i'd just go another Stradic and adding to the Stradic family which i have.
The question now is which rod?? Im getting the stradic 5000fi and thinking of putting 20lb braid on it for casting lure and unweighted mulies for tailor but also a bit of drift baiting/light jigging in the boat. Im after a rod around the 6/7ft mark and one that can flick lures but also put the brakes on a biggish fish say snapper or dhuie.
I have a budget of around 200 as im ment to be saving for a overseas trip. Any help would be nice, i was thinking the shimano rack raider snapper rod but better quality would be nicer.
Cheers danno

trip info
Submitted by just dhu it on Wed, 2011-05-18 20:33in reflection from our recent trip to Exy ( thread : exmouth drama ) both Rob and i acknowledged that when we had to make some serious phone calls from the Hospital we both relied on contact names and numbers being stored in our mobile phones, which were located back out our accomodation unit and some of the numbers were not current. Mrs just dhu it said she was amazed that i didnt cover all my basis when going away, especially when travelling to remote areas ,that we where all up to date with all contacts, mobile and land lines, work and home of each member and a simple way to do this would be pass around a note pad when under way and each person write down all of their own current contact numbers and doctors and medication they might be using at the time . this would not take long and would certainly save time when needed

tides
Submitted by mateusz on Wed, 2011-05-18 15:39i know that fishing around high tide is best.
but i was just wondering, which is more important, is the difference between low tide and high tide or how high the actual high tide is?
i am assuming it is a combination of both, but im sure everyone has alot of insight in this.
cheers

not fishing but still good news - Luke Adams out of coma
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2011-05-18 14:11The West Australian understands the 19-year-old Swan Districts ruckman has opened his eyes but it is unclear if he is aware of his surroundings.
It is believed he has not spoken.
He has been moved to a ward and his condition has been updated from critical but stable to stable.
It is unclear if this development indicates an improvement in his overall condition.
The 18-year-old charged with grievous bodily harm over the alleged assault that left Mr Adams fighting for his life was refused bail yesterday in Perth Magistrate’s Court.
Dylan Gerald Wayne Winter, 18, allegedly punched Mr Adams once in the face during an incident in Northbridge on May 1, causing him to fall and hit his head on the road.
Details of the alleged clash were aired for the first time in court yesterday.
Mr Winter’s lawyer Mara Barone told the court the Secret Harbour teenager believed there was going to be a physical fight between his friend and Mr Adams when he allegedly threw the punch.
Mr Winter had been walking with a friend who was arguing with his girlfriend when an altercation erupted between the friend and Mr Adams, who had been on the other side of the road.
The court was told the friend and Mr Adams had been shouting and stepped towards each other but were metres apart when Mr Winter ran over and told the WAFL player to leave his friend alone.
It was alleged the teenager then landed a single punch to Mr Adams’ face. Ms Barone said self-defence could apply to the case.

CARNARFIN 2011
Submitted by Cruise Control on Tue, 2011-05-17 21:55G'day Guys
Anyone going up to Carnarvon at the end of the month to fish the Carnarfin comp. Its the 20th year so probably will be a big one. I did this for 7 years but then missed a couple of years, time to get back in the swing. Usually have to travel fairly big K's but the fishing can be sensational.

Reel advice please
Submitted by danno on Tue, 2011-05-17 21:25Hey all.
So I've been surfing the tackle websites looking for a new combo to fish for tailor and salmon in the future.
I've looking at the Seagate 3500 or the Stradic 4000/5000. I can't seem to find any specs on the seagate could anyone with the reel please list some up?
Ive been thinking about matching one of those reels with a Daiwa Sea jigger 10ft. Would this be a good combo? Thinking of running 20lb braid.
Cheers danno

salmon, bream, snapper
Submitted by k0j0 on Tue, 2011-05-17 19:38I've checked seabreeze for water temps and it doesn't look that good for salmon, up the coast. Anyone done Toms Thicket lately? And bream. Went paddling yesterday and have never seen so much water. We actually paddled over a local, normal island in the mandurah estuary. And then did bush, no water, bashing over ground normally at least 50cm above high water. No need to go further. No bream. How are you all. Out there? And has anyone, REALLY, got any mulloway, this year, from any northern Mandurah beaches. Hullo? Hullo?

Demersal Jiggs and Soft Plastics
Submitted by DhuBoi on Tue, 2011-05-17 17:37Hi guys some you may remember a little while ago i put up a post regarding ideas for a soft plastics and jigging set up for demersals species such as dhues
and snapper. After some great advice and suggestions. A fellow fishwrecked member offered me the goods ( Love the trading post/ selling section on this
website, no fishing gear goes to waste). I now have a Eupro twincraft pe1-3 jigstick and a shimano spheros 6000fb with 30lb braid which both are in mint
condition. Looks a great set up and im really keen to use it soon. ( When the weather permits and uni isnt in my way). Now I know there are many
suggestions on soft plastics and dermersal jiggs was wondering what direction and hints you could give me in terms of what jiggs and soft plastics people
have had most success on and the jigging techs they use to work specific jiggs.what weight in jig heads and jigs would i need to jig from depths of 20 to 50
metres. Any help would be awesome as i know there are many people who know the ins n outs of this bussiness. Cheers

So how about a fishwrecked squid comp?
Submitted by hlokk on Tue, 2011-05-17 11:28Theres been a fair few squid lately, and this time of year can be great for it. Obviously the calimari classic is looming and there was mention about non-metro entries and/or making it a photo comp instead. The photo comp for the exi comp worked well I think (both the method and the after BBQ, :p).
So why not a Fishwrecked squid comp? (Was there one before?).
I'm thinking we could do it with photos (and nametag) for longest squid like the fishwrecked exi comp, then organise a few BBQ's/after drinks. Would be open to everyone (not just metro) but maybe have metro/non-metro categories to make it a bit fairer :p. Have a BBQ/meetup in Perth, and Karratha/exi/down south/etc. Not sure we could match the classic in terms of prizes, but i'm sure we could get a few squid jigs/egi gear (particularly if theres a nominal entry fee, say $5). Would be mostly a fun/social thing, plus a good chance to meet up with a few people afterwards. Maybe even get someone technically minded to set up a cam link up to the non-metro BBQ's. Squid teleconferencing, lol
I think we should have a prize to best ink shot photo, and maybe best photo too?
So how about it?

queenies Broome Jetty
Submitted by mikeurnot on Tue, 2011-05-17 09:11
Was at the Jetty last night and saw heaps of big fish in schools come in around 6.30pm.
Would they be Queenies? If so what would be the best way to target them? Poppers or feather jigs?
Have heaps of poppers but realy are confused which ones to use.
The feathers ones are white with a touch of pink.
Any help?
So far have cought a big trevelly and an emperor on 100lb hand line. Nice.
Was bitten of on the dropper using half mulies suspect shark but dont think so as this was well hooked.
On inspection the last 60mm of dropper was serverly serated cutta?
Oh the big trevelly was caught on the top dropper on the tail of a mulie no long than 40mm lol.
Any help on the Queenies would be great hitting jetty again tonight.

LENCO Trim tabs
Submitted by GT POPPER on Tue, 2011-05-17 07:37Hi Guys, need some assistance with a Lenco Trim Tab...I noticed prior to our recent trip up north that the port side trim tab had evidence of rust seaping from the bottom of the shaft and settling on the stainless trim plate. I tried the up and down controls and nothing happed but i could hear slight clicking indicating it had a feed to it....Do these thing seize?...Its obvoius a seal has let go and water has corrodide something or other.
With this in mind and as it was stuck in the up position I thought all would be ok for the trip, however whilst on the water up north after a few days it managed to work its way to the fully down postition.... Strange, because I understand these are on a worm shaft.
The boat was listing pretty bad and compensating it with starboard trim just made the whole boat handle shit house. I tried to manually move the tab with no success so I decide to remove the whole unit just leaving the stainless plate, this included severing the electrical feed at the top of the shaft.
Firstly, has anyone encountered these issues and secondly would any one recommend a dealer/boat mech
Cheers

Kill Tank On My Boat Seems Wrong
Submitted by magpiejohn on Mon, 2011-05-16 20:08Hi all I have just learned my kill tank bleeds direct into the under hull. Since catching fish of late I've got scales and guts in the hull. What is the norm for a kill tank as I only know what
Because of who I bought it from, it seems like a design fault to me. Does any one know what the go is on them. I've got a whiting stuck in my hull which now stinks to high heavens. It looks like if it was made correctly, it should have its own bleed out hole at the back of the boat. Any water from the front goes through it via a channel hole and out a channel hole direct to the under hull.
Therefore any fish I get the blood, scales and guts fill the under hull, which is a pig to empty as keeps clogging.
