Fuel Economy
Submitted by pharlap on Mon, 2012-01-02 14:55I have 1999 Johnson 130hp 2 stroke V4 outboard (4 Cyl) on a 5.5 mtr fibregalss runabout, what fuel economy can I expect ?
I am a newbie and had to be towed in yesterday (by a champion fella) on the Swan River after running out of fuel I had 30 ltrs of fuel on board, and ran out of fuel after about 3 hours cruising (non stop) along at say averaging 3000 RPM. I went from Tonkin Hwy boat ramp in Bassendean thru to around Perth Flying Squadron Jetty in Melville Waters, then on coming back ran out of fuel between Barrack st jetty and the Causeway.
I had been advised that approx 2000rpm is around 5 knots, and 4000rpm is approx 8 to 10 knots, when I did my skippers ticket, but does or would that depend on the outboard size HP ?
My question is what did the newbie do wrong ? (apart from running out of fuel) dhuurrr
Did I just not have enough fuel on board, for the size motor it is, for what I thought I could do ?
Or did I possibly not drive it to complement fuel economy, should I have had it up on the plane more ? Which would have had me very close to the speed limit. Would I use more fuel in this size motor going 5 to knotts, as opposed to going quicker ?
How many litres per hour should this motor use, is there a rule of thumb like 10 litres per hour, or does that again depend on how I drive it ? Or is it not that simple to work out.Doing the speed limits how long should it take me to go from Tonkin Hwy to say Fremantle fishing boat harbour ?
Thanks in advance Steve.

Boating Injuries / First Aid Kit
Submitted by iana on Sun, 2012-01-01 07:15As part of my boat service, I am checking the contents of my first aid kit. I was wondering what I really need to take in the boat, and what is unnessary clutter.
So to work on that question, what sort of injuries etc have people experienced while boating?
Typical would be fish hook and knife injuries, bites and stings from sea life and crew sickness.

Ideas to offload Mercruiser parts
Submitted by Muppet on Thu, 2011-12-29 00:25Guys,
Chasing some ideas or advice.
I have been trying to sell a brand new stainless Bravo 2 prop and Bravo 2 lower gearbox.
I've tried on fishwrecked, the newspapers, quokka etc but arent getting any bites (apart from the scammers!)
Does anyone know of any marine wreckers or similar that take on gear like that ?
cheers
Kev.

A question on what is correct way of doing.
Submitted by glastronomic on Wed, 2011-12-28 20:243 boats were trolling lures and livies over a well known wreck.
All was well, then another boat arrived and proceeded to anchor right on top of this wreck to dive on it.
One of the other boats was pretty argivated about this and a word or 2 seemed exchanged with a few hand/ finger signals.
What is the go with this sort of thing?
I for one could not be bothered with getting into an argument, but think it is a wee bit rude to just barge in irrespective of what other vessels are doing.

new sarca anchor "excel" model or "standard" ?
Submitted by stevebw23 on Wed, 2011-12-28 13:51Just need any opinions from people that have used a sarca "excel" anchor. i know the size i want (number 3 size) but not sure whether to get the "excel" model or the standard model? i would like to get the "excel" model in stainless but haven't found many reports on it and thought i'd check on here 1st to see if anyone has any opinions on it. i have a 23ft fibreglass boat, bit over 2tonne i'm guessing. the anchor will be mainly used for overnight stays at rottnest along with my current danforth/sand anchor (i use a drift/parachute anchor while out fishing so thats not too important).
Yeah any feedback would be great. Cheers

Launching lancelin
Submitted by Rig on Tue, 2011-12-27 07:35Hey guys I will be up near Lancelin soon and haven't really been there for years.
Is there a proper ramp there now or is it still a beach launch?
If not is a solo beach launch possible there as I remember it being a calm beach with hard sand

Re-powering boat
Submitted by joycey on Thu, 2011-12-22 20:20Hi guys, bit of advice please.
Looking at buying a used 2003 haines signature fibreglass boat that has a Mercury 90hp 2 stroke on it currently.
Boat is underpowered, so I would want to re-power with a new 115-130hp 4 stroke.
Would get it done through boat dealership.
Just wondering is this a problematic thing to do, or will it be an easy thing for the dealership mechanics to do without leading to any issues with the boat set-up etc...?
Cheers,
Michael.

4 Stroke engine oil options
Submitted by mlayton76 on Wed, 2011-12-21 10:34I have a Honda BF15A 15hp 4 Stroke and was about to do an engine oil change and realised I have SAE 10W-40 but the owners manual recommends SAE 10W-30.
Its an old outboard nearly 10 years now, and noticed that 10W-30 oil is hard to come buy, is this because to new stuff is better for the engine?
Any advice before I go ahead and drain and refill it would be appreciated.

Dinghy owners favourite outboard engine.
Submitted by glastronomic on Tue, 2011-12-20 21:19
Just to get a bit of a picture on what seems to be the popular outboard and Horsepower rating for tinnies less than 4 mtrs.
What is your favourite outboard to power yours?
Mine 18HP (Tohatsu) but use 8HP (Mariner) for trolling in the pressed alli skin tinny.
Like to know what top sp[eed it achieves.

Getting rego stickers off boats
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Mon, 2011-12-19 09:59I'm going to replace the rego numbers on the side of the boat but it looks like there will be a fair bit of sticky gunk left over once they come off. Anyone done this before and if so what did you use to get it off?
I assume some of that Orange Power gear or turps will probably work but when I used some on my car a few years ago I found it took off a small amount of paint so I'm a bit paranoid about using it now.
Also I'm thinking about getting a single sticker made up that has all five characters on it instead of using five individual stickers. Has anyone tried this?

What speed should I be getting??
Submitted by Grooveepants on Mon, 2011-12-19 06:00I have a 5.6 quinnie classic runabout with a 90hp honda on the back and was wondering what speed I should be getting from it?
I just saw this thread http://fishwrecked.com/forum/trailcraft-540-profish-sale and he's getting 30-35knts from his 90hp at 5000rpm but I'm sure I don't come close to this.
Is there something you can do to get more speed?
Also how many rpms should you run your motor at to use less fuel and give the motor more life?

importing Mercruiser spares
Submitted by Tony Halliday on Wed, 2011-12-14 16:33has anyone brought in spares for Mercruiser motors and legs before?
I have a few leads through websites with some suppliers having replacement non-Mercruiser spares for a third of the price of gen items.
Time to do my U-joint knuckle unies and bearings when I replace the bellows soon.
Also trim rams are stiff and seals stuffed from salt buld up, so may repalce them with aftermarket units.
May as well look at doing manifolds and waterpump at the same time, then she is spic&span till it needs a full rebuild in the far far future ( I hope lol)
Compressions where still good, so not worried about iternals.

Buying a boat
Submitted by Percula on Wed, 2011-12-14 10:46Hey Guys
Seriously looking at buying my own boat. But as I have never done it before, need some pointers.
How do you check to make sure nothing is owing on it? Do you need to make sure it has a HIN number etc - can you do this online?
How much is stamp duty etc on the trailer/transfer fees - is this expensive?
Obviously insurance
What else to look for if buying private? How do you know its not dodge is basically what I am checking.
Any other pointers?
Still undecided on what I want, whether centre console would be too cold/wet for Albany and should I get a runabout.
Also there is a boat with a 90hp honda, that says it has done 800 hours - that seems like a lot - but is it? Like buying a second hand car your not really sure how good the engine is?
Thanks
David

1st time buyer
Submitted by Graeme76 on Mon, 2011-12-12 22:08I'm looking at getting my first boat very early next year, just a basic 12-14ft aluminium dinghy & it will have to be second hand as I'm only going to have $1500-$2000 to spend on the initial purchase of boat, motor, trailer & basic safety gear. I'll save up for sounders, gps etc as I get around to it. What I'm after is any tips & advice you can give me on what good things to look for & what to beware of when buying a secondhand aluminium boat, motor & trailer.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Electric winch
Submitted by FishNChick on Mon, 2011-12-12 20:03Just wondering if anyone has bought and used an electric winch on their boat trailer? I have a 4.2m Stacer and currently have just a hand winch. My ideal is to create a situation where I can use my boat on my own and be able to get it back on the trailer. This would obviously be easier if I could winch it up remotely from the back while I keep it straight.
Can anyone comment on a brand that they have bought, where they bought it from and what I need to be looking out for. I am not sure what can go wrong and what I should be avoiding in this case.
Thanks very much!!!

Runabout or Cuddycab
Submitted by joycey on Sun, 2011-12-11 21:19Hi there,
Currently looking at different boats in the 5.2-5.5m range.
It will be my first boat, used for fishing ( out to rottnest when good conditions ) and family boating.
Some of the boats are runabouts, others cuddycab's.
Be grateful on opinions regarding runabout or cuddycab's for my uses...
Cheers,
Joycey
