4 Stroke engine oil options
Submitted by mlayton76 on Wed, 2011-12-21 10:34I have a Honda BF15A 15hp 4 Stroke and was about to do an engine oil change and realised I have SAE 10W-40 but the owners manual recommends SAE 10W-30.
Its an old outboard nearly 10 years now, and noticed that 10W-30 oil is hard to come buy, is this because to new stuff is better for the engine?
Any advice before I go ahead and drain and refill it would be appreciated.

Dinghy owners favourite outboard engine.
Submitted by glastronomic on Tue, 2011-12-20 21:19
Just to get a bit of a picture on what seems to be the popular outboard and Horsepower rating for tinnies less than 4 mtrs.
What is your favourite outboard to power yours?
Mine 18HP (Tohatsu) but use 8HP (Mariner) for trolling in the pressed alli skin tinny.
Like to know what top sp[eed it achieves.

Getting rego stickers off boats
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Mon, 2011-12-19 09:59I'm going to replace the rego numbers on the side of the boat but it looks like there will be a fair bit of sticky gunk left over once they come off. Anyone done this before and if so what did you use to get it off?
I assume some of that Orange Power gear or turps will probably work but when I used some on my car a few years ago I found it took off a small amount of paint so I'm a bit paranoid about using it now.
Also I'm thinking about getting a single sticker made up that has all five characters on it instead of using five individual stickers. Has anyone tried this?

What speed should I be getting??
Submitted by Grooveepants on Mon, 2011-12-19 06:00I have a 5.6 quinnie classic runabout with a 90hp honda on the back and was wondering what speed I should be getting from it?
I just saw this thread http://fishwrecked.com/forum/trailcraft-540-profish-sale and he's getting 30-35knts from his 90hp at 5000rpm but I'm sure I don't come close to this.
Is there something you can do to get more speed?
Also how many rpms should you run your motor at to use less fuel and give the motor more life?

importing Mercruiser spares
Submitted by Tony Halliday on Wed, 2011-12-14 16:33has anyone brought in spares for Mercruiser motors and legs before?
I have a few leads through websites with some suppliers having replacement non-Mercruiser spares for a third of the price of gen items.
Time to do my U-joint knuckle unies and bearings when I replace the bellows soon.
Also trim rams are stiff and seals stuffed from salt buld up, so may repalce them with aftermarket units.
May as well look at doing manifolds and waterpump at the same time, then she is spic&span till it needs a full rebuild in the far far future ( I hope lol)
Compressions where still good, so not worried about iternals.

these are the ones I'm looking at, has anyone used any of these guys?

Buying a boat
Submitted by Percula on Wed, 2011-12-14 10:46Hey Guys
Seriously looking at buying my own boat. But as I have never done it before, need some pointers.
How do you check to make sure nothing is owing on it? Do you need to make sure it has a HIN number etc - can you do this online?
How much is stamp duty etc on the trailer/transfer fees - is this expensive?
Obviously insurance
What else to look for if buying private? How do you know its not dodge is basically what I am checking.
Any other pointers?
Still undecided on what I want, whether centre console would be too cold/wet for Albany and should I get a runabout.
Also there is a boat with a 90hp honda, that says it has done 800 hours - that seems like a lot - but is it? Like buying a second hand car your not really sure how good the engine is?
Thanks
David

1st time buyer
Submitted by Graeme76 on Mon, 2011-12-12 22:08I'm looking at getting my first boat very early next year, just a basic 12-14ft aluminium dinghy & it will have to be second hand as I'm only going to have $1500-$2000 to spend on the initial purchase of boat, motor, trailer & basic safety gear. I'll save up for sounders, gps etc as I get around to it. What I'm after is any tips & advice you can give me on what good things to look for & what to beware of when buying a secondhand aluminium boat, motor & trailer.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Electric winch
Submitted by FishNChick on Mon, 2011-12-12 20:03Just wondering if anyone has bought and used an electric winch on their boat trailer? I have a 4.2m Stacer and currently have just a hand winch. My ideal is to create a situation where I can use my boat on my own and be able to get it back on the trailer. This would obviously be easier if I could winch it up remotely from the back while I keep it straight.
Can anyone comment on a brand that they have bought, where they bought it from and what I need to be looking out for. I am not sure what can go wrong and what I should be avoiding in this case.
Thanks very much!!!

Runabout or Cuddycab
Submitted by joycey on Sun, 2011-12-11 21:19Hi there,
Currently looking at different boats in the 5.2-5.5m range.
It will be my first boat, used for fishing ( out to rottnest when good conditions ) and family boating.
Some of the boats are runabouts, others cuddycab's.
Be grateful on opinions regarding runabout or cuddycab's for my uses...
Cheers,
Joycey

Filling holes in glass hull
Submitted by mr_meks on Mon, 2011-12-05 11:06What do people generally fill old holes in the hull with? Mine are below the water line and in the upper half, with white gel coat. Do I use some sort of white epoxy product, or will something softer like sika-flex or silicon be ok?

Humminbird sounder/GPS updates
Submitted by Magneto on Fri, 2011-12-02 09:59Hi all, I thought my chartplotter (2004/2005) had seen better days until I realized that after registering at their site, a bit late I know, it gave me access to the very lastest Matrix 97 update d/load, with the the unit not reading all of the detail in my Navionics Gold card I decided I had nothing to lose and go with the current update using the MMC/SD slot and it worked. Now seeing all the card detail and it added a new heading to part of the menu and changed something with the sounder too and gave more adjustment to the scroll speed. After setting the unit back to "Defaults setting" as instructed then powering down , powered up with the SD/update in the slot for successful update. It's like new again.
P/S Backup your Way-points first as I did lose mine but no problem as they where in HumminPC program, D/load to SD card and and into MMC/SD slot power-up and there they are back again. The main Humminbird D/load went straight from the desktop into the SD card to the 97 unit, no prob.
I hope this might help anyone thinking of doing the same.
Cheers again
Highly recommended......

Tight mechanical steering
Submitted by Tandawg on Fri, 2011-12-02 07:40Hi all, I noticed this morning that my steering was a bit tight at certain angles. Although it did free up after a bit of a shove it wasnt as smooth. Sometimes it did free up a bit. Apart from hydraulics, are there any quick fixes, or if anyone can identify the problem?
My outboard is a 100HP 4 stroke.
Thanks in advance

What inhull transducer for lowrance hds8
Submitted by biggerfish on Sun, 2011-11-27 17:49Hi all just had the new atomix hardtop fitted out with trim tabs and a hds8 but because of the tight space on the back of the boat the transducer doesn't have much room for adjustment and any speeds over 10knts the hds doesn't read bottom I'm looking at getting a new transducer fitted inside the hull while I'm away at work this stint but just looking for recommendations I don't think a wet box will fit in the hull as it's a tight squeez trying to work through the hatch door but what are some of my other options would a normal transducer stuck to the inside of the hull give as good a reading. Does the lowrance support a 1kw transducer or should I just get the original transducer fitted to inside of the hull. I've heard a lot of people talk of the airmar ??? Transducer would this suit the lowrance any advice is much appreciated as I am planning on spending a bit of coin on it and I want the best picture possible. Oh it's a fiberglass hull and I usually fish 40-100m but plan on fishing deeper later so I want something that I won't be needing to upgrade. Thanks

Bevelled Trailer Rollers ??
Submitted by Dizzy on Sun, 2011-11-27 17:17I'm got a bit of an issue when loading the boat with the squarish inside edge of the rear rollers binding on the strakes.
It eventually pulls over the strakes, but puts a fair strain on the rear rocker setup before letting go with a fair ol' ping.
I can stop it by getting the trailer deeper, but then it stuffs up the roller guidance, floats too much and doesn't touch the keel rollers until the boat's at least half way on.
This is a PITA if there's a cross wind or wave, where the keel can miss the keel rollers.
Extra PITA as I often launch & retrieve the by myself.
So I need to make it easier for the strake to cross over the roller.
I'm sure I've seen some rollers with bevelled edges before, but now I'm actually looking for them I'm stuffed if I can find any !
Called into a trailer mob in Wangara last week and they could't help either.
If anyone knows what I'm talking about and where I can get some it'd be great if you can help with some info.
Thanks,
Dizz.

Whats this on our prop, and Cav plate depth.
Submitted by Josh on Sat, 2011-11-26 18:31Hi Guys,
We finally got our boat in the water today for its first propper run (charter called it off due to the conditions, so had the whole day) but it went fairly well, just a few questions about a couple of things,
firstly the depth of our leg on the outboard is set to just above level with the bottom of the boat, as you can see by the arrow in the picture when we are running it seems as though the cav plate is a bit over an inch under water, should we lift it by one hole?
Secondly on the prop that the outboard came with (2004 50 hp Etec) there are these lumps on the body of the prop in front of the blades? Does anybody know what these are for? We are thinking that they are just causing drag. It came off a dual setup if that aids in shedding any light onto the matter.
Cheers guys,
Josh
