Trolling tips
Submitted by sharles on Sat, 2013-03-16 13:39Hi guys, just wondering if anyone has had some productive locations off Dampier in the last few weeks that we can give trolling a go. We are hoping to hit the water tomorrow. We have small kids a board which have limited patience for boring trolling but we would like to get onto some fun fish. So if anyone can point us out any spots that are currently working would be great. Kids just need to see some good quality fish to know what we are after... :) Small boat so not too far past last islands. TIA

Point Samson Tips
Submitted by ryangler on Sat, 2013-02-16 10:29Hi Guys
Heading out from point samson tomorrow for a change of scenery, any body got any tips on where to head. I have searched and someone posted head for the last channel marker then make a bee line for Delambrey sounding around for ground. Is this a good rule of thumb? Cheers

Barra still biting
Submitted by whiplash on Sun, 2013-01-27 23:05Thought I'd share the weekends spoils. Hadn't been out in the tinnie yet this year and glad to see that the barra are still biting. Got my PB this weekend and thought it was the metery but only 88cm. Still a horse at that size. Few others all around 75ish. Was good to get out again.

New to Port Hedland
Submitted by SSteveSS on Sun, 2013-01-06 04:44G'Day Guy's.
I think it is about time I said Hello. I have been trolling this site for about six weeks while still living in Melbourne. Now I have landed in Port Hedland its time to start doing some serious fishing.
I have learnt a lot about W.A. fishing by reading your posts and watching videos. This site has a lot of info for someone that has not done the type of fishing I am about to experience.
I will be fishing land based until me and the misses get settled in and I can find a boat as I had to sell my old one before leaving Melbourne. It was going to cost me more in transport costs than I paid for it, so time for an upgrade.
I managed to get a bit of tackle in my suit case but will have to wait about a month before most of my gear gets up here, I think thats a good enough excuse to buy more don't you? (the CFO said she will be keeping a close eye on my bank account until she gets up here).
I hope it won't be too long and I will be posting my own fish pic's and posting stories of the one that got away and maybe even the one that didn't.
So thanks for all the knowledge you guy's have passed on, now it's time to put it into practice.
Cheers Steve.

Its Gone......
Submitted by CCC on Sat, 2013-01-05 10:52I'm no longer an owner of a Chivers Thresher.
If you guys are chasing a new boat give Chivers a call. These guys give the best service and I will not hesitate in buying another boat off them.
Have a look at the links below and see where this boat took me. Over 25000km by road and about 280hrs on the engine in a little over 18 months.
We have had some of the most amazing days on this boat, weeks in the Kimberley, crazy insane days catching bill fish, many nights in Pilbara creeks, Chasing dhu's in Perth, Diving for crays in Exmouth and much much more. When I brought this boat I planned not to be one of those that leave it in driveway. Think I managed to use it enough haha
A big Thanks to Luke, Michael and Peter from Chivers, Cheers guys.

Dampier tip
Submitted by sharles on Thu, 2012-12-20 11:19Hi, just wondering if anyone could give us a couple of proven fishing spots for catching some bottom fish. The kids just want to catch some keepers and we've had not much luck of late. Small boat so Malus is about as far out as we head unless it's a cracker of a day. I got onto some small stuff on the weekend but no real keepers. The end of the day ended on a high note of hooking up a 90+cm Queenfish on the troll which made hubby smile at least.
Thanks.

Pilbara barra tips
Submitted by jewish on Thu, 2012-12-20 07:35So I have been going up some of the local Karratha creeks chasing a barra. I haven't even seen one yet. After reading thru some other posts I can't work out what tides are best to get them? Neap/spring/ high/low? Also do you try to get the livies right up to the edge of the tree or in the deeper hole?
What really was frustating, Last week end I launched at back beach and when I got back to the ramp I notice a French backpacker got a size one off the rocks. Lucky bastid but I guess that fishing.
any tips would be great

Ktown Macks & Tuna
Submitted by pricey10 on Thu, 2012-12-13 13:48Hi all i had a good little session this morning. My mrs Terri wanted to go out but she gets sea sick so goin offshore was not and option.
I decided to get the halco's out after a year of no use and replaced the rusty hooks. on the way out we cast some stickbaits into the tuna schools and ended up with 6 mack tuna in 8 casts on the light gear, was a good start.
We went out to where we always use to catch macks and as i was running the first lure out it got smashed! 30 min later we had 3 on board and lost a couple to. The biggest on was estimated 20kg+ (in the photo below im 6foot 5) we kept one for a feed then Terri got seasick again so had to leave at 9.30am, bloody shame that

The Pilbara never ceases to amaze me
Submitted by Webby on Mon, 2012-12-10 21:02
Today my friend Mark (Lizardo) and I were able to get up a local Pilbara creek to chase some barras. The strange weather of late resulted in tough fishing. However there were a few things that happened that I made the day special.
We were lucky enough to be joined by Brucester and his mate Garath. We entered the creek to the sight of Bruce slipping the net under a large queen fish that seemed to cause Gareth a fair bit of grief. After several hours of towing lures around ourselves, Mark connected to a nice mid size baz. We placed a tag in the fish and released it. About half an hour later mark hooked up again. As I netted his second fish I noticed the fish had been previously tagged... by us. It was the same fish. And it was a at the other end of the trawl run from where it was first captured. It’s good to know that all the effort we go to looking after these fish with fish friendly nets, supporting the belly when lifting etc actually does work.
The rest of the day saw us, and every other boat that was in the creek, flog a dead horse. The creek was lifeless. It was a vast difference from my previous experiences in this creek this season. On the way home I stopped by a reliable reef to pick up a cod or two for dinner. I caught one that was looking very healthy. After I took the fillets of, out of interest, I opened the stomach and was amazed by what I found. A whole blue swimmer crab. Not sure how the cod thought it was going to fit my lure in its guts as well.
Cheers

Karratha reds
Submitted by pricey10 on Wed, 2012-12-05 20:21Hi, Well after about 2 mounths off the water while fitting the new motor and electrics we got out today. we took Giggsy out with us but unfortunatly it wasnt his day today sorry giggs. but we still done alright. we spent the first half of the day looking for new ground with no success so we went to one of our reliable spots and it was on! reds and spangles then giggs had a epic foul hooked shark battle, but the sharks had moved in well an truly by then so off home we went. we ended up with 3 reds and 6 spngles in the esky and the new suzi and furuno ran sweet! sorry but only a few iphone pics

Dampier Trip Report - Brucesta & Giggsy
Submitted by Brucesta on Mon, 2012-12-03 09:30After 2 months of waiting, the weather gods finally played nice and allowed myself and a mate out for a fish. My goal was to get him onto a good fish as he didn't have much luck last time out so with the right weather we could head north and hit up the red grounds. We marked a spot on the way out for another time and headed to my trusted spot that always produces a few fish. Giggsy was using bait but wanted to try so SP's but this never happened in the end as it was a bit quiet, i told him to load up on bait and make it big, reds love it!
they do but he found a 39cm one instead, released and back to grow bigger. I stared with a Nitro elevator 4Oz jig head and a 7 inch Bullhead McArthy SP, it got nailed eventually but no hook up. I persisted a few more drifts but it was too quiet.
Changed to a demersal knife jig, a new thing for me and i was working hard to catch my first fish on one of these jigs, after 15 mins the rod loads up and we're on! a shark was lurking but he left my fish alone and boated a nice Rankin Cod.
A little while later i had another hit, but it was toothy and took the jig, i tied on another one, which was like a sardine and jigged away, i was retrieving it up and then i got another hit halfway up, it shot to the surface and a juvenile Black Marlin, all of 15kg worth tailed walked off with my line, the shitty split ring snapped and he got off, got the jig back and redid the assist hook with a new skirt, interesting to say the least, then on the next retrieve to the surface a Cobia followed it up, dropped it down and hooked up, short lived as he got me on my prop. no worries another $25 down the drain and 1 more jig. Poor old Giggsy wasn't having much luck as i loaded up on another good reefy, got him up and a nice Saddle-Tailed Seaperch.
The Sharks had followed us along the drift and Giggsy got the short straw and hooked one, he battled it like a champ and got it boatside before we cut him loose, time to move!
We left that spot in search of new ground, we went around for an hour and decided to head to the spot we marked earlier. BINGO! the sounder was showing life, i decided to change to bait as i was getting tired of lifting the jig
so it was all fair. my luck had run out as Giggsy sunk the hook into a nice trout and that saved my bacon i'm sure he will enjoy those fillets
Short time later he's on again and i had my doubts as it was surfacing away from the boat i was thinking small shark then in came a nice Cobia, making up for the smaller one i lost so 2 all in the end and another happy deckie!
