Service Shimano trynos 30 & 20
Submitted by telferfish on Mon, 2012-07-02 11:23Have had some trouble servicing a couple of lever drag reels. Normaly just give them a dip in warm soapy water leave them to dry then inox the external moving parts. but for some reason decided to strip them right down layed everything out neat cleaned everything up lubricated and reversed them back together. looked great and looked like i knew what i was doing however now they both are stiff to wind when the drag is up, if i back the drag right off they wind like normal but when setting the drag up to 5kg they can hardly be turned. Does anyone have any ideas of what i have misplaced / needs replacing or what i have done incorrectly? Any feedback is appreciated and can hopefully save me sending them away

Things that have happened to you as a decky and what you have done to deckies
Submitted by carnarvonite on Tue, 2012-06-26 20:15As a result of some good feedback from on the "have you suffered from seasickness thread" a lot of chatter has come out about what you have had to do as a decky and what your skipper has made you do as part of your "job"!!!
I've spent quite a few years at sea, either as a decky crayfishing for one season [that was enough] salmon fishing, wetlining and sharkfishing both longline and demersal netting as a decky and as a skipper. Over that time I've met some real characters who played some of the worst tricks you could imagine and done some good ones myself.
While sharking up north we had a market for shark claspers [dicks] and would cut them off and chuck them in a bucket to be rinsed and counted/ weighed at the end of each day, anytime we had a newby on board we would get them to give the dicks a rinse which involve squirting them with the deck hose that delivers something like 50 litres a minute flow through an inch hose. The newby would poke the hose in the bucket and instantly with salt water it foams up so I would yell at the poor bugger, grab the bucket and toss the contents over the side , telling him that they were now bloody worthless as he'd washed the sperm out of them and it was a loss of something like $300 a kilo. The decky would nearly shit himself.
The other crew were wise to it and had bolted up round the wheelhose and were cacking themselves while I tore strips off the poor bugger as they'd been through it themselves. The poor bloke would be a blubbering wreck for about 10 minutes till we let them in on the secret.
Much the same down south when we pulled up the orange spongy gorganzola in the net, the decky would instantly try to pull it out but being soft it would fall to bits instantly and away i'd go.

Warning to Boaties/Idiots on the water - busy weekend for rescue services
Submitted by Iceman on Mon, 2012-06-25 11:52http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/wa/14031887/warning-to-boaties-after-rescues/
First call Saturday (11.30am) for EPIRB alert 15nm off Hillarys. Dispatch both vessels at speed. On the way out 3 people picked up out the water by RAC chopper. When we arrive find Cat under water with bow just showing.

The next hour was spent trying to get it back on 2 hulls for towing. had some success but not all the way.

Towed the vessel to Thompsons Bay in the hope we could refloat.

We were able to get with 20mtrs of the beach with Rangers assistance but unable to refloat as transom door not sealed and believe water had got into the hulls which we could no access.

This picture was when further out.
Inspection found a lot of gear still in the boat including tackle boxes and high end rod/reels.
Got home around 7.00pm
Second call
Saturday night 9.30pm get a call re multiple flare sighting north off Rotto. 5 rescue vessels and 2 choppers dispatched. On the way out advised a vessel had located the vessel in distress.
Short story is that person on the vessel broken down about 10nm off Ocean Reef called his father around 6.00pm to advise he had broken down. Father launches his boat and decides to go and get him. Whilst looking for him (dark by now) sons mobile runds out of battery. Son decides to let off flares. No one had been advised of this, so that is why full resources launched.
Only found this out after we escorted both vessel to Ocean Reef. Both vessels were at this point under power. Distressed vessel had battery problems.
When I explained the situation the the father he did not careand wondered what all the fuss was about.
Got home at 1.30am and not a happy chappy.
On all completed an additional 3 rescue.

Reply Email from Tony Burke
Submitted by Iceman on Tue, 2012-06-19 19:10
Got this today in reply to my initail email
Hi,
Australia has one of the most diverse and beautiful marine environments in the world.
I'm taking the opportunity to write back to everyone who wrote to me, or provided their email address on a postcard or petition to advocate for increased protection for our oceans.
For generations Australians have understood the need to preserve pristine areas on land as national parks. Our oceans contain unique marine life which need protection too.
This decision helps turn the tide on protection of the oceans and Australia now leads the world in marine protection.
The maps show the most comprehensive network of marine protected areas in the world and represent the largest addition to the conservation estate in Australia’s history. Wherever we could achieve the same environmental outcome and minimise the impact on industry or recreation we've done so.
Following the huge number of submissions received, protection has been increased for a number of iconic areas, including the Perth Canyon, Geograph Bay, the waters off Margaret River, and reefs in the Coral Sea Marine Reserve including Osprey Reef, one of the top dive sites in the world.
Together the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the Coral Sea Commonwealth marine reserve will become the largest marine protected area in the world, covering 1.3 million square kilometres.
Follow this link for the YouTube preview of the announcement:

waSourceID:NT000041C2
The proposed national marine reserve network will protect more than a third of Australia's oceans.
Australians have always had a special relationship with our oceans. Most of our major cities hug the coast, and beach holidays are part of growing up for almost all of us. We are deepening that relationship by leading the world on protecting our magnificent oceans.
Yours sincerely,
Tony Burke
This was my reply
Mr Burke
you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about - have you ever visited Perth.
On The West website you are stated as saying - "Environment Minister Tony Burke says divers can still access parts of a massive underwater canyon off the coast of Fremantle after a world-first network of marine reserves is established."
see link - http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/news/13984887/divers-can-still-access-rotto-trench-minister
This trench is 700mtrs deep - no diver could access that and fishing in the trench is only done in the top 20mtr.
How about you have the guts to come over here (that's if you know where Perth is) and explain yourself.
regards
Mark

Divers can still access the Rotto Trench
Submitted by Iceman on Tue, 2012-06-19 14:08
Environment Minister Tony Burke says divers can still access parts of a massive underwater canyon off the coast of Fremantle after a world-first network of marine reserves is established.
Mr Burke today told Federal Parliament that two of the three heads of the Perth Canyon, also known as Rottnest Trench, would remain open for recreational use while one head would become a marine national park.
Perth Canyon is a submarine canyon located about 22km west of Rottnest Island and is bigger than the Grand Canyon in the United States.
Mr Burke, who last week unveiled a plan to create 44 marine parks, tabled an article in parliament featuring opposition deputy leader Julie Bishop calling on the Government to create larger marine sanctuaries.
The new marine reserves, which will cover 3.1 million square kilometres or a third of all Australian waters, will limit fishing and some oil and gas exploration.
Liberal MP Natasha Griggs asked Mr Burke if, following the banning of commercial, recreational and tourist charter fishing boats in some areas of northern Australia, the Government would increase surveillance in Australia's northern waters.
Mr Burke responded by saying it was unlikely fishers in tinnies would get far enough to make a difference to Australia's security.
"If you get in the average tinnie and you reach that area 680 kilometres away, you probably don't have enough petrol to get back," he said.
Mr Burke said there was a management obligation that came with national parks.
"You have opportunities in these areas to be able to use a range of different initiatives," he said.
What a joke - Just goes to show Tony Burke has no idea what he is talking about.

Cheaper fuel now in Carnarvon
Submitted by carnarvonite on Mon, 2012-06-18 18:38Recently a new Woolworths /Caltex servo has opened up here in Carnarvon which is a bit of a bonus for those who use shopper dockets to save a bit .
Its nearly right in to town on the LHS so you won't miss it.
Since it opened diesel and petrol have dropped by about 4-5 cents a litre
One is hoping the prices will drop even further now that construction has started on a new roadhouse to replace the old Palms /BP servo that went under with the floods. Its supposed to be the u beaut jobby that will have everything for the truckies with showers, 24 hour service, good meals, you name it but we will have to wait and see until its finished.
