New member (Introductory post)
Submitted by Anytime Brad on Fri, 2009-08-07 23:46I have been following the forum for some time now and finally got around to signing up. I am not that experienced in fishing up here in Perth, Grew up in Albany and learnt from my grandad chasing leatheries, KGW and anything else that came along. I have lived in Perth on and off for the last 20years and have finally got my own boat. I have taken the advice and filled in my profile. Have gained a heap of general info from the site regarding Perth fishing which I am grateful for. I hope I can help others at times in the future.
I am doing a double shift arvo-night so thought it would be a good time to introduce myself. I usually get days off midweek and I am often looking for a deckie (no guarantees as I am just finding my way around offshore) I usually launch at Cockburn.

Polices plan bites them on the bum
Submitted by Shorty on Fri, 2009-08-07 14:49I see in todays West,, 55 per cent of the 266 vehieles in the first week of last month have not been claimed,,this is the new car confiscation laws.
It goes on to say in New Zealand 40% are never claimed.
Police say they could be left with a bill of $100,000 a week for towing and storage( i reckon thats a low figure as more cars get confiscated and time goes on)
Bad luck boys it looked good on paper,,pitty the Kiwis did not tip you off earlier .

Fish warning tag?
Submitted by Goodz on Wed, 2009-08-05 18:28After a little incident today I have decided fish should carry warning tags with "WARNING - CHOKING HAZARD" on them...
My 1 year old daughter was crawling in the backyard and found a large dhuie scale on the lawn and decided to eat it, getting it lodged in her throat and almost choking her! My wife jumped into action with a finger down the throat and made her throw up and dislodged the scale... luckkkkyyyyyyyyyy. Maybe I'll have to be a little more careful when cleaning fish outside... or maybe the dog should learn that fish scales are like chips and eat them all up for me!

Parking Fees at Boat Ramps
Submitted by On the Level on Wed, 2009-08-05 15:54
I used the East Fremo ramp for the first time this year, was shocked at the $12.00 hit for parking.
What do you get for $12.00? an average ramp, no toilets and dick-heads that can't drive.
When did the council put up the price? Last time I used the ramp it was @ $7.00.
Can you get an a yearly pass for parking?.

Furuno 585 Help
Submitted by RobN on Sat, 2009-08-01 09:06Looking at buying a Furuno 585, and maybe upgrading the 600w Transducer to the 1 Kw transom mounted transducer.
Was hoping somebody with experience with this unit might be able to tell me what depth I could expect to read up to and any other benefits I could expect, with the 1 Kw Transducer compared to the 600 W.
Have spoken to a few saleman and keep getting a different answer.

What is the stupidest thing you have done
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Fri, 2009-07-31 23:12What is the stupidest thing you have done while fishing or getting ready to head out weather it be landbased or out on a boat?
dont mention the bungs as i think most of us have done that at some stage.and i am one that has done it a couple of times
years ago a bloke i knew went fishing in his mates boat, went and threw the anchor in but forgot he hadnt joined the new shackle on the rope to the chain as the old one was rs , so over went the anchor and chain but the rope stayed behind

Rod/reel matches - advice please?
Submitted by Hansie on Thu, 2009-07-30 15:01Gday guys.
i have just purchased a Ryobi 5000a metaroyal spinner and need to get a rod to match it.
i'm thinking along the 10-15kg, 6'6" to 7' ranges. would be hesitant to go much heavier than 15kg though.
it will mainly get used for bottom bouncing for dhus and the like in up to 100m water (yes, i have overhead gear too but favour spinning reels) and also for shallower water work where the brakes need applying on larger baldies and things.
i have already got a trusty spheros 14000 on a 15kg fibreglass rod which is great for travelling and knocking around.
any rods under 200 will be considered, fibreglass preferred for durability, fuji/quality guides a must. any ideas?
also, need a reel/rod for the mrs, she got a taste for fishing recently and i am lost trying to think of a entry level setup. i already have baitrunner6500, daiwa BG60, spheros14000 and ryobi 5000. wanna get her something a bit smaller. maybe 6000 size and cheap at about 200bux for rod and reel. i would get a penn 650s but my mate's new 850s looks cheap and crap. 4-8kg rod (starlo stick?) and 6000 reel of some variety???
ps: what do you think of her coronation trout? i'm crazy jealous. she also got a 4kg baldie and approx 70cm spango same session.

heard some bad news today about the V8's
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Wed, 2009-07-29 22:26I was sitting in my truck at work today and heard some bad news on the radio. I think Jamie Wincup and Craig Lowwnds are sick of winning all their races in the v8's, in 2010 they will be going to drive Holden's. its going to be strange not seeing them on the podium any more

Very Very Lucky Boys
Submitted by carnarvonite on Tue, 2009-07-28 13:45Heard about two blokes getting washed into the drink at Garth's rock a couple of days ago.It was on a day when we had a forecasted 5 metre swell.By all accounts the two were regulars at Quobba coming up here for 4 weeks a year over the last six years. Not five minutes after they had been washed in the two tugs for Rio Tinto's salt operation rounded Cape Cuvier ready to bring a ship in to the jetty to load salt.
All in all they were in the water for an hour before being brought on to the tug with one of them nearly on his last legs.If it wasn't for the tugs they would have had just about zero prospects of survival with aboats being unable to be launched let alone get out of the blowholes because of the big swell or having to get the Sea Rescue boat up fom here in Carnarvon which would take a minimum of 1/2 -3 hours to get there.Everyone who has fished there recently comments on how many sharks there are in the area as so I think they should stay away from buying lotto tickets for a while because they've used all their good luck up for a while and it would just be a waste of money.
Something away from that but might have some influence on it in the not so distant future,we [Carnarvon Sea Rescue]are trialling the ex water police 10metre Niaid boat tomorrow [Wed] to see if that is the way to go for a replacement vessel for here.If we had something like that now we could reach Cape Cuvier in good weather in approx 1-1'1/2 hours which could be the difference between life or death in a similar situation.

Swimmers warned over loved-up dolphin
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2009-07-28 09:34Courtesy of the ABC
New Zealand swimmers are being warned not to go out into the sea alone - or they risk getting a little too much love from a lonely dolphin.
Moko the dolphin took up residence at Mahia, on the east coast of the North Island, last year.
Since then hundreds of people have swum with him, but on the weekend things got out of hand with one woman.
Moko wanted to keep playing and kept swimming in circles around the woman, stopping her from returning to the beach.
She panicked, jumped on a buoy 200 metres out to sea and screamed for help.
Fisherman Joe Hedley says Moko is craving human company.
"He lets you hang onto his fins, swims around his legs, lets you pat and scratch him," he said.
"He'll come right in to knee-deep water".
He says people should stay close to shore and only swim with Moko if they are in a group.
