shonky workmanship
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Mon, 2009-07-13 21:32i was talking to a friend last week about shonky work he had done on a car, and was wondering how many people have been bitten... We had some work done on our old boat motor a couple of years back (head gaskets)and it took the guy 3 times to get the motor running right after the job was done(supposedly), picked the boat up mid week as we were heading to shark bay on the friday night, we arrived in shark bay on saturday morning safe and sound, when we decided to put the boat in the water on monday for a short run it ran like a chaff cutter, was not happy. a mechanic up there took a look at the motor and said"not good" , he pulled the motor apart and discovered the head was badly damaged . it needed some major work at around 2 weeks worth and $3500 , we ended up with a brand new motor for $4000 as it was not worth messing around with the old one.........So has anyone been bitten with work on boat , car or around the house?

Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2009-07-13 16:38Anyone here happen to work for a electrical goods company???

Looking at buying a new one.
Samsung 55" 100Hz Full HD LCD TV Series 6
Going to go in my theatre room.
Already have a 50" plasma, and a 42" as well, but the missus wants one in the bedroom, so throught best to upgrade the current theatre room TV, move it to the dining room, then the 42 in the bedroom.
Got a pretty rock bottom price for it about 3.6k so price isnt a real issue, more if anyone has had experience with Samsungs?

New Fishing Licenses..............?
Submitted by Decella on Sun, 2009-07-12 10:22Guys,
I haven't been on Wrecked for a while so excuss me if this has already been a topic raised but I was wondering what the gov plans to do with the funds raised through the new licences.
I hope it is going to the re-stocking and breeding programs myself and not to advertising companies or other out sourced companies for them to receive profit from the funds.

How many boats have you owned and why did you sell??
Submitted by Blank Cheque on Sat, 2009-07-11 08:22I thought this might make a good read. They say a man buys three boats before he is happy with the one he chooses to keep. A short description of what you have owned and why you upgraded or going to upgrade. (Keep the wife’s away from this one)
I started out with Dad having boats so as a kid I had the chance to ride in the good old Seeker flat bottom and rough as they come. His second boat a Pacemaker 18ft powered by a 70hp Seahorse Johnson. Great boat for travelling but deep V made it a rocky boat for fishing out of. “I was a chucker on that one”
My first boat was a second hand fibreglass Guardian 19ft hard top powered by a Johnson 85hp Javelin. Upgraded to go bigger.
Second boat was a second hand 21ft Chivers Seamaster Sports. What a boat it was, it had its faults but was just getting too old and underpowered only running the 165 Mercruiser. At 12y/o it was costing big dollars to maintain. Motor, leg and hull.
Third boat was a 23 ft Bruce Harris Shark Cat hard top. Could not miss it Bright yellow some of the guys from Dampier may remember the boat from the owner up there. Big heavy boat loved the stableness and the drift speed was great. Once again getting long in the tooth and just costing money for hull and motor repairs.
Present 27ft Noosacat hard top brought this new in 2002 and never looked back. On and off the trailer without even getting wet feet. Great ride, drift speed good, hardly use a sea anchor, heaps of deck space with a little cuddy cab as well. Two downfalls running two outboard cost of fuel and she hates going directly into an oncoming sea. No plans of selling this one for a long time yet.

Update on Carnarvon Jetty
Submitted by carnarvonite on Thu, 2009-07-09 19:26Time for a bit of an update on Carnarvon jetty repairs. The work barge/pontoon has been commissioned and work has started on replacing the burnt out section. They have had a few loads of timber arrive from down south as well as some unwanted power poles from Lake McLeod salt mines with compliments from Rio Tinto.
They expect it will take approximately 4 months to fill the missing section of the jetty.
There will be quite a bit of work to be done at the outer end due to the workers not being able to gain access to it,how long this will take is unknown at this time.As soon as I hear something you will be the first to know.
The train is still doing its run out as far as the missing section,if you are in town please take the run out or make a donation because the funds are still needed

My bad bloody luck!!
Submitted by GusG on Wed, 2009-07-08 15:31I had a long day at work yesterday, out of the house at 5am to fly to Pt Hedland and I got back to the airport by about 9pm. Had a big headache and keen to get home so driving a tiny bit fast (not too bad) and I went through the intersection of Barrack St and Riverside Dr jsut in front of the Bell tower. I am pretty certain that I got flashed as I went past by the fixed speed camera there. The ligth was green but I went through doing about 80 or so and I am sure I saw a flash in the mirror.
Anyway kept driving and cursing now in a bad mood when 5 minutes later along the Stirling Highway I went past a mobile camera and I was still doing about 75-80kmh. My fault, I know but still pretty bloody bad luck. One question, on the mobile cameras they have that biug red light/box there -does that flash when you get busted or does it work on 'night vision' type technology?

important information for those writting, and those signing petitions
Submitted by offroad fisher on Mon, 2009-07-06 21:24guys, after reading some of the "petitions" being put forward by a few guys, who are obviously passionate about their fishing, i think its important to bring this link below into the spot light. petitions have to be written to a specific format to even get a look at by the government... and the slightest thing wrong, will make it non compliant ( useless ). for example, at the end of a submission, it must contain a prayer!!!
DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR, AND READ IT !!!!!!
http://www.parliament.wa.gov.au/web/newwebparl.nsf/iframewebpages/Legislative+Council+-+Petitions
I would consider making a better "cover letter" explaining your dismay, in a clear concise manner, without abuse or rudeness ( because if its rude, or abusive, it will not get a look in imo ! except for the bin..). rec fisho's need to be taken seriously, and reading the petition text in the ones going around, quite frankly, they dont cut the mustard!
to be written corecctly, it should be done over a few days, to make sure things are done right. NOT DONE IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT LIKE THE CURRENT CROP OF PETITIONS DOING THE ROUNDS.
you should also have a seperate letter/ guidlines page for people who are going to sign the petition, have to read first . in that you should include a few tips on ways to say things, some suggestions, without ending up giving bias info. let people speak their own minds, without being rude.
on the subject of being rude, the amount of foul language on some of the comments within the petition, would render half the signatures wasted, unless you like sending in insults?? and again, if i recieved it, it would go straight in the bin.....i would strongly recomend you advising people against such language.
think about what you guys are saying, be polite, and clear in what you want to get across. take your time, and hear is a idea ----- actually read some info on the matter !
then, maybe a better result will come about from it all. becasue at the moment, i see good intentions, but i doubt you will get a good result from handing in things like this.

ground advice
Submitted by biggerfish on Mon, 2009-07-06 17:02
We've had the 5.2 genesis for 4 months now and have enjoyed some good days fishing out deep. I'm getting used to reading the sounder which makes fishing a lot easier knowing what your looking at. Been fishing around the south west bank mainly and done pretty well, never really cleaned up but most times we have come home with one or two duhies and a few BA or snapper. Last few trips we have tried out deeper in 80m found a few good spots that have produced but its hit and miss one day they'r biting Hot 10kg duhie, double hookups on duhies bust offs then next week can't even get a bite (thats fishing i guess). Although its a bit annoying like yesterday when u travel 40km out for one snapper and two undersized fish then have to cop it from the deckies that they didnt catch any fish I'm just glad that the outboard isnt a four stroke so I cant hear their complaints for the 40km trip home. So I'm thinking I should try and find some spots a little closer less driving less fuel and more time to fish. Also my girlfriend finds it a bit hard fishing the 80m shes talking of bying a electric reel but I told her I wouldnt take her out on her boat if she bought that.
Had a quick sound around about twenty km from point perron on the way back in on sunday but it seems its all flat bottom even when I did find the harder ground it was still really flat and no life on it no weed no coral no fish it was like it was a desert. Compared to what we fish and see on the sounder out arround the swbank it will take me a lot of driving around to find some good ground in closer.
Can any one give some advice or point me in the right dirrection for finding some ground in a bit closer. Is there spots like SWbank where the sounder shows coral caves etc in closer. I know just behind five fathom has some good ground but thats only in the 20s once u get past there its flat. Whats the fishing like between Rockingham and Mandurah like is there any deeper reefs down that way. Any advice would be much appreciated. And if anyone wants to swap some gps coordinates I have a tonne of them for all around the SWbank many of which I have never fished personally

Virgin lump
Submitted by Paul G on Sun, 2009-07-05 19:45Well we headed out at two o’clock( as i had to work this morning.) in the search of a fish, sea was flat calm, tried a few spots with no luck, went to a spot I have not fished for some time and got something big ,Sambo I’m guessing ,destroyed all the lines in the water, so all had to make new rigs and bait up for another drift. Well this is when thing got interesting ,as we turned the boat to go back a small lump showed on the sounder ,showing some good fish ,I could not believe I had never seen this lump before as I have fish that area for the last 15 years but there it was..we baited up and dropped ,then bang every line was smashed dhuies , on every line ,hi fives all round back for another drift and same again bagged out in two drifts and on the way home. just goes to show there are still some lumps that have not been fished I have never seen pots on this spot in all the years I have fish ,and am sure if anyone else knew this lump it would have been cleaned out long ago.

CC Hon. Colin James Barnett MLA MEc
Premier
Hon. Eric Stephen Ripper MLA BA, DipEd
Leader of the Opposition
Hon. Jonathan (Jon) Robert Ford MLC JP
Shadow Minister for Fisheries
Dear Minister Moore,
As a recreational fisherman of 42 years and a West Australian voter, I am concerned and alarmed at elements within the New Recreational Fishing Arrangements that you propose from October of this year.
During my 42 years of fishing, I have always supported and practised sustainable fishing, and cherish the need to both ensure fish stock levels of all species and provide the same wonderful opportunity for new anglers that I enjoyed as a child, and continue to do so.
I totally support appropriate conservation measures based on GOOD data and encourage the government to substantially bolster the Department of Fisheries(DoF) budget. Thus enabling that department to embark on a much more effective enforcement. But the latter WILL only occur if the (DoF)finally receive a massive injection of funds and resources (equipment and staff).
My very deep concerns are based on the following:
PUBLIC CONSULTATION
As a member of the (fishing/voting) public, I’m unaware of any opportunity provided by your government/party/department for the public to make any submissions on this issue. Instead, you appear to have been mislead by a few conversationalist reports and goaded in to a very unpalatable/unworkable/poorly thought out and electorally suicidal knee-jerk reaction. Such prior consultation would have provided for stakeholder input and ownership and no doubt provided a much more workable, rational and equitable solution. I would suggest that many of the elements of this better solution are covered below. No doubt there are many more.
HUMAN NATURE, RESEARCH AND ENFORCEMENT
Human nature being what it is, will always result in a number of persons within any demographic group exploiting resources and braking the rules. These people do so, usually out of no or diminished conscience, a misguided or aberrant (to the larger population within that demographic) value set or a ‘eureka stockade like mentality’ that no one can tell them what to do; then proceed to anything but what is required. Recreation fishers (RFs) are not exempt from this. As an avid fishing person, active on a number of fishing forums, I am convinced that the majority of RFs want to and do the right thing. But there is, unfortunately and inevitably, a number who do not. Sadly, the general (often under/misinformed) public at large often tar all RFs with the same (bad) brush. At it’s best, this can lead to irrational/unconstructive/poorly targeted debate. At it’s worst, such misguided public outcry can result in misconceptions by those charged with sustaining our fish stocks and actions implemented based on emotion and poorly researched conclusions.
For far too long, conclusions on fish stocks and management programs have been poorly conceived and expedited. Additionally, many of those charged with conducting such research have embarked with a preconception often tainted by emotion and feelings. Hardly the basis for impartial rational data collection methodologies and research conclusions. One only has to look at the WCB Creel Survey debate and debacle.
I have absolutely no doubt, that all of the forgoing will continue until such time as this state’s DoF is appropriately funded and resourced. Only with a comprehensive and effective enforcement infrastructure and program can we turn the current situation around without the need for ‘simple’ and extreme measures like closure areas, which, as you say only shifts the fishing effort anyway. There are many within the bad element of recreation fishers that flaunt bag limits etc because they believe they can do so with absolute impunity. Many of these misguided folk laugh at the rare presence of enforcement officers from a grossly under funded and resourced DoF.
EQUITABILITY
As you are aware, Western Australia has a number of State Government determined Bioregions. As a Mount Barker resident and RF, I fish from Albany which, as you are aware, falls within the (state determined) South Coast Bioregion (SCB). I target many species of fish, both demersal and pelagic, including Dhufish and (Pink) Snapper. There are many who feel that such stocks are under pressure within the SCB. Whilst I acknowledge that such pressure is far greater within the West Coast Bioregion (WCB) due to the far greater number of RFs that target demersal scale fish, the fact remains that such fish species aren’t restricted to the WCB.
Additionally, all RFs, not just those fishing from boats would benefit from better research and enforcement.
Therefore, surely it would be more equitable and appropriate to have a ‘Salt Water Fishing Licence’ for all RFs and to spread the cost of valuable species sustainment and enforcement?
Sure, as a SCB RF, I could sit back and rub my hands with glee at avoiding the $150.00 p.a. impost, but, to be fair to my WCB counterparts, I would rather see such impost be on those targeting such species – independent of the bioregion.
Amongst RFs, it is well accepted that 20% catch 80% of the fish, through more frequent fishing, better use of high end equipment and greater knowledge and ability to target these fish. The $150.00 does nothing to address this. With $20.00 day, $60.00 fortnight and $150.00 per annum costs, anyone wishing to target these fish species more than seven times per annum will pay the $150.00, with the highly likely outcome that they will fish more often and longer to justify the cost. Yes; people do fish during predetermined holidays, but many more fish when weather and marine conditions will allow. So, in the latter case, the $60.00 fortnight will be of no use and the $20.00 per day unworkable as a decision whether or not to go fishing is made late the previous evening when the latest weather and marine conditions are known. RFs that target these species every weekend will pay the same as the Mums and Dads that go out seven or more times a year!
ENFORCEABILITY
Even with the (very unlikely) prospect of massive improvements in DoF resources and enforcement, I am at a loss as to see how the proposed rules can be enforced. To say the least, it is completely unrealistic to expect RFs not targeting these species to avoid catching them. If the DoF only target such a proposed program at the boat ramps, then one person on board that boat can simply say s/he caught the fish! Providing of course that party doesn’t infract species bag/size limits etc. What determines if RFs in boats are targeting these species and is such targeting intentional or unintentional?
INEFFECTIVENESS
Having watched your online ‘New Fish Licences Management Media Conference’ (2 July 2009) I can say right now that it is NOT as ‘simple as that’ – RFs will pay the $150.00 (begrudgingly) and it will NOT reduce ‘the catch’ by the desired 50% that you say is required. In any case, how can you seriously believe that there will somehow magically be any sort of accurate outcome relationship between the attainment of a 50% reduction in RF WCB scalefish demersal catches? Once again, I cite the 20% RF/ 80% catch rule – and these RFs will definitely pay the $150.00!
Maintaining a database of boat based RFs will NOT tell you or the DoF what is being caught, or even what those licensed boat RFs are even targeting! The only way that such data will be provided is IF everyone completes a log book and forwards that for data collation. However, this assumes that everyone will do this, and complete the log books accurately and actually send them in. Though I support and practice the current VOLUNTARY log book program, to expect all boat RFs to do this (though they should) is NOT realistic. As said by Dr Brett Molony (2 July 2009 press conference video), the recreational sector data is gathered through Creel Surveys and ‘other methods’ (presumably through the voluntary log book program).
By your video ‘New Fish Licences Management Media Conference’ (2 July 2009), you ‘hope that these measures will get the fishery back into balance’. Given that you admit further and better research needs to be done – what baseline are you starting with and how will you measure the achievement (or otherwise) of this ‘balance’? As you have confessed ‘we have no idea on how many there (demersal scale fish and other species) are’!
UNDESIRED OUTCOMES
Electoral Backlash – there is no doubt that the state Liberal Government will take a major hit on this issue at the next election. Simply because there’s been no individual stakeholder consultation and boating RFs, (who by the way ARE voters – you seem to have missed that point!) have been presented with, at best, a somewhat fluffy fête a comple’.
Reversal Effect – Your proposal could well see previously responsible RFs keeping more fish to justify the $150.00 p.a. fee. Again, it is well accepted that 20% catch 80% of the fish, through more frequent fishing, better use of high end equipment and greater knowledge and ability to target these fish. The $150.00 does nothing to address this. With $20.00 day, $60.00 fortnight and $150.00 per annum costs, anyone wishing to target these fish species more than seven times per annum will pay the $150.00, with the highly likely outcome that they will fish more often and longer to justify the cost.
Boat Hire – Those RFs previously hiring boats or booking onto Charters will now think twice. This will have a negative effect over and above their business that must already be heavily affected by the global economic down turn. Perhaps these should be exempt?
Shifted RF Effort and other Bioregion Drain – The closure you propose (whilst I’m not completely against it) WILL result in greater pressures on other bioregion stocks and more boaties target the Scalefish Demersal Species in grounds outside the WCB – where, I might add, these species also exist!
Fishing Tackle Industry – Any downward shift in RF boating will have a corresponding negative effect on this industry, also already suffering!
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Let me once again make it very clear! I am totally in support of sustainable fishing and fishing stock management. I also support a broad based salt water fishing licence – IF the money is targeted correctly, et al, better and more objective research and deployment of appropriate enforcement resources.
I’m also in favour of a ‘species habitat’ driven demersal scale fish boat fishing fee – not one based on one bioregion.
Compulsory log books are long overdue.
Far greater enforcement with better/more resources and equipment.
More research OBJECTIVELY based without preconceived or desired outcomes or tainted by ‘emotional argument’ or ‘convenient extrapolation methods’.
Yours Sincerely
Colin John MOLLOY

Free to good home
Submitted by ody on Fri, 2009-07-03 10:40
Hi Ya,
Yep, that's right, free to good home.
Well, not quite but you'll get the picture.
If any of you good folk keep seed eating birds, particularly budgies (no budgie smugglers need apply), I have 18 kilos of hulled millet to give away. Budgies just love the stuff. This is hulled millet meaning it has had the husks removed. It is actually organic millet specifically for human consumption. It has passed its use by date so the company my wife works for was gong to throw it out but given we have budgies, she brought it home. It is actually quite expensive stuff.
Anyway, she brought home 25kgs of the stuff and given we only have three budgies that is more than enough to last us decades.
So, if you are interested in 18kgs of millet PM me or respond here and it is all yours.
You will have to collect though as I'm not posting that much

. I'm located in Mirrabooka.
Cheers.
PS - if you only want some of it then by all means ask as I'm not insisting on all 18kgs be taken by one person. As it is in 500gm sealed bags it will be easy to break up.

Man's dinner sparks $100K boat fire
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2009-07-02 15:22A cabin cruiser worth about $100,000 has been destroyed in Mandurah, south of Perth.
The fire started in the galley about 9:00pm as a man was cooking a meal.
It quickly engulfed the 10-metre boat, which was moored at the marina.
Firefighters were forced to protect nearby boats as they attempted to bring the fire under control.
The man suffered minor burns to one arm.
He was treated at the Peel Health Campus and was later discharged.

Priest blames Holy Wine for drink driving
Submitted by Colin Hay on Mon, 2009-06-29 13:32An Italian priest caught driving over the alcohol limit pleaded to police that it was only because of the Holy Wine he had drunk as part of the mass, Ansa news agency reported yesterday.
Police rejected the priest's excuse and revoked his driving licence anyway.
Now the 41-year-old priest is set to appeal against the ruling, saying his alcohol consumption was not "voluntary" since it was part of the Catholic ritual in the four masses that he had celebrated during the day.
He was caught coming off the Milan-Turin motorway with a blood alcohol content of 0.8 grams - above the authorised limit in Italy of 0.5 grams.

Todays weather
Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2009-06-29 07:13Did anyone get the hail??
Man we got belted down our way.
Hail stones the size of 20c pieces and bigger!!!
Never seen anything like that before. Was about 5.15am and it smacked through. Alarms going off on the cars. I dare say my jeep is damaged because of it.
Anyone else get the wild weather?
I got to the city around 6.15am and it barely looks like its rained.
