Boat sinking of Scarborough
Submitted by Iceman on Tue, 2009-06-02 10:162 men were lucky to survive after their boat sank 5nm of Scarborough. I was on rescue duty on Sunday when we got the call and was on site within 15 minutes from Hillarys boat harbour. They let of a flare and it was spotted by another boat. The only mistake they made was not knowing how to use thier radio to put out a mayday. They called their brotherinlaw who called the water police and then the sea rescue. the delay was about 10 minutes. If another boat had not seen the flare it could have been a different story.
Lesson is always logon with your local sea rescue and know how to use the radio.

Electrical Storms
Submitted by Blank Cheque on Sun, 2009-05-31 20:35After reading a few posts and comments on today’s weather it reminded me of a question I was going to raise.During a storm has anyone else noticed the buzzing coming from their two way ariels? The first time this happened to me my deckie raised it as I was under the hardtop and never even heard it. Are there any dangers of increased lightning strikes or is there an increased risk?

Question about 27meg radio antenna
Submitted by Paul N on Sun, 2009-05-31 10:17The white plastic coating on my antenna / whip has perished and starting to fall off exposing the wires almost all the length . Logged on to sea rescue the other day so I know it still works. Anyone know if it's ok just to wrap tape over it or is a new one required.
Thanks

Work WANTED
Submitted by Pete D on Fri, 2009-05-29 08:58G'day all
I've got a mates son who has rolled into town and is after some casual work for a few months. He is 18 and a smart lad. He has finished Yr12 and is travelling around Oz for a year with a few mates and is off to uni next year.
He has registered with agencies and dropped off resumes to various places already.
His experience - waitering, shop fit outs, landscaping. Basically, he is willing to do any work and has his own car for getting about.
His plan is to save enough $$'s in order to then travel up to Darwin.
Any help would be appreciated. PM me if you can help.
Cheers Pete

anchor retrieval float
Submitted by just dhu it on Tue, 2009-05-26 10:49I have been using a anchor retrieval float system for the last year or more and get a lot of comments on my useage when out and about on trips , as did i several years ago when i learnt a few tips at gnaraloo where some ex cray boys told me they anchored at any depth to ensure sitting over schools of reds and rankins and was shown their device for retrieval rather than manual labour,( best option would be an electric winch of course) they simply had a large SS ring and float that attached over the anchor rope, you drive forward adjacent your rope and over the anchor position and the float runs back down the rope and lifts the anchor and chain of the bottom and back to to the surface, then simply turn the boat around and retrieve rope and anchor whilst floating on the surface , theres a lot less labour required and i find this can be easily carried out when with wife or kids. there also is the safety factor as there is no need for your Deckie to be perched up the bow trying to yank up the anchor especially in rough conditions, I use the device all the time and have anchored easily in 120 mts using a large grapple hook and 6mts of chain and retrieved with no back breacking exercise, there are a few units available , i have seen some units that have a large clip that tensions on the rope but prefer the large 120/150 mm ring and open clip with large float that allows the ring to go right down over the chain and holds the anchor otherwise theres a chance of the chain and anchor sliding back down when your pulling it in of the surface, Happy deckie, happy boating !!

Also open to the idea of buying a secondhand 25l plastic boat fuel tank as well if anyone has one.

Great White Shark off Perth
Submitted by mako magic on Sun, 2009-05-24 18:21A great white shark has been sighted circling a whale carcass near a popular Perth beach.
Floating about six nautical miles west of Scarborough Beach, the carcass is believed to have attracted the shark, which was spotted on Sunday.
WA Department of Fisheries spokesman Tony Cappelluti said he was concerned the dead whale would float closer to the shoreline.
"While the carcass is a long way off any Perth beaches, it is important that boat users or divers are aware of the potential increased shark activity near the carcass," Mr Cappelluti said.
"There has also been another shark sighting (Sunday) morning at Strickland Bay on Rottnest Island, where warning signs were erected several days ago after sightings made during the week."

Buying a new TV?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Sun, 2009-05-24 14:43Ok, finally looking at buying a new TV? I suspect this subject has been raised before in here, but did a search and couldn't find anything.
Now, if price wasn't an object, I'd probably go for a Sonny Bravia, or something of similar quality.
But I also would like something around the 50' mark.
I understand that most broadcast content is not yet 1080p, but want to future proof (as much as you can with this sought of techically volitile technology), so thing 1080P would be the way to go. There's also the 600Hz models which proport to lessen the high speed issues.
Reading some websites like http://www.cnet.com.au/plasma-vs-lcd-which-is-right-for-you-240036500.htm, it would seem the advantages/disadvantages of contrast/fast motion and longevity are becomming less distinct.
It might be my ageing eyesight, but I watched a bravia and an LG next to each other in a large department store (both around 50") and couldn't decern that much difference quality wise, but the the proce differential was substantial.
I know LG doesn't have a good name in other products.
So, you experienced lot, what's your thoughts please?

A nice problem to have...
Submitted by kane on Sun, 2009-05-24 09:29Have had my heart set on the Daiwa morethan branzino 3000 for some time, even recently in a thread stated it would be my favourite reel when i finally bought it due to its versatility in the metro area, but today Ive noticed the saltiga 3500 game.
The saltiga just looks so much more robust compared, now Im starting to re think it.
What are your thoughts on the comparison between the two, theyre similarly priced, same drag, saltiga weighs more but thats not a concern to me.
I think the saltiga might be the better option....?
It definately is a nice problem to have but It is a decent amount of money to spend so i want to get it right.
Ive caught a few more dolphin fish off the rig since an ealier thread where i got my first so I am keen to bring the reel with me to and from work to use on a travel rod i just bought for this use, but Id also be using it metro for a whole range of s/w species. Id probably get a spare spool also so i could use it for a wide range of applications.
I open up the floor to your opinions...

While scanning though the hordes of work emails (from home and on my B’day), I came across one from David Beavis.
“Hello Peter and congratulations.
As you are aware each month a subscriber to my website wins a 30 inch image valued at $500 from my open edition range. You have been selected as the winner for the Month of March.
Thanks for subscribing and Congrats !!!!!”
You ripper – some good news at last.
Many thanks to David for supporting the Fishwrecked-Reeltime Magazine.
Now the hard part….selecting one of his great pieces of work.

gold prospecting
Submitted by Paul G on Sat, 2009-05-23 13:21I know this topic is none fish related ,but now winter is here and with this comes weeks of none fishing,i was wondering if anyone on the site, goes Gold detecting.I myself have done many years on and off. Haven't been for about five years as the kids have been to small and there is so much gear to take.Jesse is now busting to get out bush and have a crack at finding gold ,so we will be heading up in the school holidays. We have had some good finds in the past with the best being 230 ounces over 3 days. Unfortunately the price was no where what it is today to sell. At around a $1000 an ounce there is some good money to be made and it's tax free!!!!

tenting it up
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Fri, 2009-05-22 22:20well we are finally back in perth and now its time to start organising our next years holliday but this time to save some $ we are looking at tenting it , but it cant be any old tent , it has to be a big bugger with a room for kids a room for us and a room for storage . so has anyone got any ideas as to what sort to go for brand and size with durability a must as we will be keeping it for a loooooooong time but on the other side it cant be too pricey, or if anyone on here has a good condition family tent that they might want to get rid of, we will be looking at a few over the next month or so so we know what to get

RunPee tells movie fans when to go
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2009-05-22 14:37This would be handy for when you are fishing offshore. It always seems that the fish come on the bite when you go to have something to eat or want to relieve yourself. All the best, Colin
An enterprising freelance software developer in the US has come up with an ingenious solution to that wee problem of when to dash to the loo when you're at the movies.
RunPee.com, created by Dan Florio (aka polyGeek) tells you the best time to go.
"Every movie has a few minutes you can miss and not be lost when you sit back down. No more guessing when to run and pee!" the site says.
RunPee.com "reviews" are posted by users.
A recent example, Star Trek: "RunPee approximately 50 minutes into the movie when ... Capt Pike leaves the bridge on his way to Nero's ship and says, 'Chekov, you have the con'."
The site also tells you how long you have before you need to be back in your seat.
When you get home, you can click on a link on the site to tell you what you missed while you were away.
