Buying Overseas
Submitted by plucky on Fri, 2009-09-18 15:15I am looking at buying a Lowrance HDS-5 Combo unit. Has anybody had any experience, good or bad, buying online from overseas (ebay). There seems to be substantial savings over buying at local stores.
Cheers

November Charter
Submitted by Matt T on Fri, 2009-09-18 11:53G'day all,
Got a family friend coming from the UK in Novemeber. He really would like to go out on a charter but I am unsure who to recommend? Any tips would be great as I am sure there are some that are better than others. Obviously Southern Cross being a sponsor will get a call. What fish will they (charters) target considering the ban in place then?

Protecting an exposed rod
Submitted by hlokk on Fri, 2009-09-18 11:25I have a jigging rod that has a split rear grip, but the exposed blank bangs against the edges of rod holders (only left in when not in use).
I'd like something to protect the blank, but not sure what would be most suitable?
Want something light, and non-water absorbent (dont want water getting underneath). I thought of heatshrink, but I wont get it over the rod butt (even if I stretch it first). I think you can get some black closed foam high density tape perhaps an inch wide and 2-3mm thick, and spiral it around the blank. I've seen it before, but no idea where to get it. Maybe something else i'm not thinking of.
Any suggestions?

mofsc
Submitted by rubes on Thu, 2009-09-17 16:30Have any members of the Mandurah Fishing and Sailing club seen the latest money grab decision? The committee in their wisdom have decided to charge all fully paid up members a fee of $40 to park their boat at the club jetty overnight. However if another club is invited to an event at the club this fee is waived! So the people who pay the fees to keep the club running are the ones who get screwed to use the club facilities. I hope they eventually work out that the money they lose through people cancelling their memberships is much more than the money they hoped to screw out of the members for this rediculous fee.

Honda 200hp water test
Submitted by Paul G on Tue, 2009-09-15 16:04Well I have been a 2 stroke guy as long as I can remember, and have not had the chance to go out on a boat with a four stroke, Menopaul has the Etec225hp and it is a very quiet motor compared to most two strokes. We took the "Re Lisa" down the swan today for the water test on the new motor and it blew me away .The old motor was a 175 evenrude and did 34 knots, but was noisey. The Honda four stroke can hardly be heard when idling and at wot you can hold a conversation over the noise .It was very quiet and we got a top speed of 44 knots, with a full tank of fuel 210 litres I Was very impressed and would recommend anyone looking at buying a new motor to get out on a boat with a four stroke, before buying a two stroke and see for yourself .I will do a couple of trips and get some fuel consumption figures, Am one happy little camper. Thanks Malcolm and Ryan down at Men On Boats for your service, it was well worth the wait.

EOI - fellow badminton players??
Submitted by honsu chin on Mon, 2009-09-14 19:31Me been Asian... are there anybody that play badminton among all the Fishwrecked members here???
Im thinking of forming a playing club where we meet up everyweek for a few hours. Obviously I need numbers to be able to do this. I'll hunt around for courts and see what sort of prices there is. Once we have the numbers, Im thinking of taking a fee for every meet to cover the court cost and replacing shuttecocks. If it gets big enough, there maybe comps with prizes and that may lead to annual best player comps...just a thought atm.
SO....anyone??

For all the photographers out there....
Submitted by kaney68 on Mon, 2009-09-14 10:26For all the photographers out there......
This is a lens that "most" photographers (including pro's) will never get a chance to use, purchase or even see in real life !!
http://www.outdoorphotogear.com/blog/hands-on-with-the-canon-ef-1200-f5-6l-lens-296
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-1200mm-f-5.6-L-USM-Lens-Review.aspx
The EF 1200 L was available by special order with lead times running about 18 months.
Why such a long lead time?
For one reason, it takes nearly a year to grow fluorite crystals large enough to be ground and polished for use in this lens.
In addition, the lens is "virtually hand-made".
The original price was 9,800,000 yen - that was MSRP $89,579 in the USA. You can now buy a 2nd hand lens in 9+ condition for $120,000 !!!
Don't let the US $120,000 price tag put you off

poor whale
Submitted by danno on Sun, 2009-09-13 18:07there was a baby male whale wahed up on city beach 2 day.
it freed itself twice but it got washed back up both times.
it tummy is all red and raw coz of the sand its been laying on.
there is also scratches on its sides and back from where a killer whale has attacked it.
it has been there all day and theyre hoping it will get washed out to night in a rip and if not they might have to euthanise the poor thing.
it is only a baby but it is still 7 tonne.

Where do you buy your Photo'g stuff?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Sun, 2009-09-13 10:37Just wondering where everyone buys their camera equipment, from the one off buys to continually adding bits and pieces.
Is the internet the best, big retail, specialist stores and for you is the price the most important thing, knowledge and service or finding the piece of equipment you require or a combination of all?

Handheld GPS units
Submitted by WODF on Sat, 2009-09-12 12:45When it comes to electronics I have absolutely no idea but I want to get myself a handheld GPS to take with me for both land-based missions and offshore. I'm after some advice on what's good, what's not, particular brands and what should I look out for in terms of features, specs etc. Looking to spend up to $500 on a good one that will last. All comments appreciated.
Cheers!

Opinions... Rod, Reels etc.
Submitted by H.S. Chan on Sat, 2009-09-12 10:56hey guys, wondering if there's anyone who has come across instances where they've found models of things you buy or use that have worsen since the previous earlier model and why.
For example, penn ss to the newer ssm, the gearing and shaft isnt as durable or as strong as previous.. Anything like that.
Thought it would be a good way for guys to find out some things to look at when purchasing something new, or maybe something old.
Is there anything out there that hasnt gotten better and superiority is handed to older models?
Cheers fishos!

NEW FIN NOR AND QANTUM RANGE OF REELS
Submitted by PJAY on Fri, 2009-09-11 15:35I went down to see the guys at Compleat Angling in Rockingham (sorry sponsors but i have been going there for years) to look at the new range of Quantum and Fin Nor reels they have just brought in.
Very impressed with the quality with features you would expect in a lot more expensive reel. I am like a lot of guys on this forum who for various reasons cannot afford or justify buying the top of the range okumas, daiwas, shimano's etc.
I walked out with a new (offshore)OS7500 Fin Nor Reel and a matching Penn Steel Tip 2 boat rod and line for under $400. Can't post a pick cos i'm still trying to work out how to do it. For those of you in the Rockingham area who are budget minded the new range is worth a look.

Zoom or Telephoto
Submitted by Mick on Fri, 2009-09-11 13:30G'day guys
Wondering if the camera buffs here could explain the difference between a zoom lense and a telephoto lense and their different applications. Looking through some stuff last night and it did my head in. Also which books would you recommend to help a novice get the most out of DSLR photography predominantly sports (surfing etc ) and landscapes.
Cheers Mick

Submitted by Feral on Thu, 2009-09-10 19:26i towed the boat to bunbury yesterday for a service and dropped in on mark at gotone tackle for a few pieces seeing as there isnt much in busso anymore .... was sad to learn that he isnt renewing his franchise and not sure if gotone is going to keep a store in town :( ... it seems that all the specialised stores are dieing out ...
on a good note ... i got a heap of gear cheap :) ... everything is on special atm so if your after something give him a ring ... pretty sure there was 3 x Ryobi Metaroyal Safari 5000 Reels for $299 and a mate got a saltiga popper rod nice and cheap.
