Q for people who are better than me at photography - fps
Submitted by HuggyB on Fri, 2009-10-23 15:54If I wanted a camera to take action shots in exmouth of billies jumping for example, what is the minimum frame rate I should be looking at? Obviously more is better, but more = more $, and generally speaking I dont take a lot of pics aside from fishing ones.
At this stage its likely to rule out a DSLR as you are going to need a fair outlay to get a decent frame rate in burst from my limited research. I know it will make you DSLR fanatics feel dirty, but what camera in the compact arena would you recommend to get the job done? And if you must, feel free to try and convince me I need a DSLR and recommend one also.

south west wineries
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Thu, 2009-10-22 15:58So, Im going to the southwest in just over two weeks, and that means winetime. So what are your favorites? I am probably more of a red drinker and generally like cab merlot, shiraz, viognier and grenache styles.
The trip is to Walpole via Albany hwy to Mt Barker, to Denmark, to Walpole. That being said, first stop will probably be http://moombaki.com/ As it is on the road from Denmark to Walpole and we will stop there on the way to Walpole to get some for the tent site.
I have been to the Meadery which is interesting too.

hours spent
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Wed, 2009-10-21 22:25just curious as to how many hours people would spend on here, not just logged on but physically going through the posts in an average week. I spend a fair bit of time on here and worked out during the week it would be close to 1.5 hours each day sometimes a bit more and weekends when well that depends on weather we go fishing or just work it could be around 6 or 7 hours over the whole weekend. At least the laptop gets used

Mayday this morning
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2009-10-21 20:58Got woken up this morning with a phone call from one of the home bases notifying me of a mayday call.Bolted down to the sea rescue building and picked up what info we had received.Made a rdaio call to the vessel but only got a click back, after a few of these we worked out it was a yacht we were tracking coming down from Exmouth. Also via the click answers we had her position of between Cape Cuvier and Point Quobba. With the local police listening in,they organised a vehicle to head up there. We were unable to notify Quobba station but managed to get the Rio Tinto boss and also the ship loader foreman at Cape Cuvier who sent a vehicle down the coast .
After some waiting we got a phone call to say the lady in the yacht was found ashore just north of Quobba homestead in good condition, sadly her yacht didn't fare so well with the keel being torn off and a major hole in the hull.
I met the lady by accident later in the day and she was very thankful her mayday had been heard and acted on quickly.

Jims mowing heading down the toilet ?
Submitted by Shorty on Tue, 2009-10-20 14:45Being in lawnmowing on and off since 1983 (when i left school)i have seen a lot of mowing franchises(mostly over east)but in W.A its been mainly V.I.P from South Australia and Jims mowing from Victoriia headed by the biggest fruit cake on the planet IMO Jim Penman (last week he said he gets one mowing complaint from ever 100,000 mows ,yeah right, lol)
But it looks like time is fast running out for Jim as the franchises want him out,,it will not help Jims mowing though,,its the whole system and the franchise fees,,like Ansett its only a matter of time before the whole lot collaspes IMO
Heres the first nail in the coffin.

Christmas Island - ended with a BANG! But not the one I wanted. Back with pics.
Submitted by Pete D on Mon, 2009-10-19 22:12Flew out from CI at 1615 today. At about 3000ft into takeoff - Bang!...I mean BIG bang goes inboard engine on my side of plane. The BANG sent a shudder through the whole plane...... would of been a great photo opportunity (camera in my lap)......but my mind was on...well this is it, the wing should blow up next. Nice being here...see ya later.
Lots of screams as plane yawed and shuddered. Hostess ran down, saw flames and ran up to cock pit. Pilot down for a look too. Could feel the heat through the fuselage!. Finally engine shuts down. Circle for awhile and land back at CI. Hmmm, wouldn't pay for that ride again!
Engine cactus. Replacement plane tomorrow...apparently.
Bourbon is kicking in now.
Cheers and glad to be posting this!
Pete
Finally made it back to Perth at 3am yesterday.
The replacement plane arrived about 5.30pm at CI. Taxied in, door opens, ‘bang’ - off goes the emergency slide. Hmmm, yeah, we weren’t excited about this flight either.
Anyway, the plane was taking passengers to Cocos first, then returning at 9pm to pick up 13 passengers (including me) for the trip back to Perth. More time for a few more bourbons.
A turbulent landing at Perth finally completed the journey…at last.
Slide on the deck;
Pilot replacing the emergency slide cartridge;
Take off for Cocos Island;
Bung plane on the left;

Man charged over rescue "hoax"
Submitted by kaney68 on Mon, 2009-10-19 15:12From thewest.com
A 24-year-old man has been charged over a hoax distress call which sparked an extensive air and sea search on the weekend.
The unemployed Clarkson man has been charged with creating a false belief regarding human safety.
The maximum penalty is two years' jail and a $50,000 fine.
Police will also seek restitution for the $50,000 search costs.
The man is expected to appear in court tomorrow. He was taken to Warwick police station earlier today for questioning.
It is believed the man is a CB radio enthusiast who has previously worked as a deckhand and is a voluntary firefighter.
Earlier today, a senior sea and rescue volunteer said anyone found guilty of such a hoax should be forced to spend a year of their life as a sea rescue volunteer.
The call sparked a grid search of more than 2500sqkm of ocean with no sign of the boat or crew.
Metropolitan Sea Rescue Group president Roger Howell said the person responsible should be forced to work on his rescue squad once police were through with him.
“We feel abused and it’s not about money or fuel spent …but we go out in the hope we are going to see someone clinging to an upturned piece of furniture and pull them aboard,” he said.
Mr Howell, who is also deputy commander of the Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group, spent eight hours leading the search and said volunteers were exhausted.
He said the search stretched sea and rescue volunteers to the limit.
Doubts were raised about the call after a grid search of more than 2500sq km of ocean failed to find any sign of the supposedly stricken vessel and its crew.
Members of the public had also called police claiming they knew the man who made the distress call as a prank.
Sgt Wear said 18 water police staff and volunteers in boats spent about 19 hours searching for the vessel and its crew.
A police-chartered plane and the State rescue helicopter also searched.

SP Hook Sizes
Submitted by Paully on Mon, 2009-10-19 12:12At the risk of asking a silly question, how does one determine what size hook to use for soft plastics, i.e Jerkshads and the like. Is it a common sense thing determined by what you fishing for (within reason), or is there some relationship between the SP size and hook size. Any help appreciated.

Finally Finished
Submitted by milsey on Sun, 2009-10-18 15:19Well after deciding to make a mini bike for my year 12 engineering studies main project I’ve spent the whole year sourcing designing and fabricating. I’m pretty happy with the final result and for all you youngens not sure what to do in year 11 or 12 I would defiantly recommend engineering studies as it’s a nice little break from physics, chem, maths and English.

Did anyone actually get out apart from us
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2009-10-18 14:21We planned to get out on the water sunday morning (midweek decision) come saturday morning i put the new alternator in the boat and cranked her over ,the 350 chev running like a tiger on steroids so loaded everything on ready to go , had organised a friend and his son to come along for the ride with a plan to hit up a kg spot i have , got to rocko around 7 with the water being a bit iffy but we decided to go and see what it was like out there anyway. Our plans changed once we got out as it was a bit on the rough side so decided to go out after sand whiting which were a bit closer. We anchored up and droped a couple of lines down while i set up the burley pot and sure enough our first nice size sandy came up on our friends sons line (250mm) then our mate got a double hookup both around the same size as the first. in all we landed 9 sandys all around the 250mm size , 2 undersize flattys , 2 just size skippy and 3 small wrasse , the way i look at it is the fish werent big or large amounts but we got out on the water and had a bit of fun 2 old boys v 2 kids and a blowin (Sandy ) the tally old boys 5 whiting , 1 skippy , 2 flatties and 3 wrasse, the kids plus one 4 sandys and 1 skippy, we were back in at around 11 then the wind dropped off. all in all it was nice to get that salt water fix after nearly 4 months , next time it wont be so long.

ROCKINGHAMS NEW JETTY
Submitted by Baron Custom on Sun, 2009-10-18 10:46Spent last night on the new jetty that has a ramp down one side that gets you closer to the water. Nice new jetty, lots of locals walking dogs, going for a stroll. We got there about 5.30pm ish and got the end of the jetty and before u know there was about 20 or 30 having a fish..
A bit later two older guys on the piss loud and obnoxious and a young guy rocked up, A grandad and his teenage grandson and a few young familys enjoying a fish on an extremely well lit jetty and Im talking extremely well lit it! Stands out like a beacon in the bay but all in all a nice place for a fish, pity the fish didn't seem to think so, they were well noted by their absence. I think the only thing caught all night was one ugly mutha scorpion fish, not what you want on your line.
As the night went on the crowds thinned as the enthusiasm levels dropped and a bloke said to me, "I don't know how anybody can expect to catch anything with all the noise that's happening" and I agreed but what can you do on a public jetty apart from rely on your fellow man to do the right thing. Ha what a joke!
It only takes a couple of inconsiderate individuals to spoil it for others which leads me back to the two blokes on the piss loud and obnoxious. One of them decided it might be funny to throw another blokes dog into the water off a very high jetty, this was a very nice calm, devoted dog sitting on the top looking down at his owner while he was fishing...
As soon as the splash happened a certain "Fishwrecked" member confronted him with it, he cowered away and denied it all, then he had to deal with the owner wallking up the ramp and to the end of the jetty to ask who threw his dog in.. He wasn't man enough to face the owner of the dog and completely denied it. They spoilt the night for everyone then they proceeded to drive away drunk as skunks what complete f$&*in morons! Cant wait to get this boat in the water so I dont have to put up with all that shit and at least have a chance of taking home a feed of fish.... I still say land based fishing sux...
And to the loser who likes to abuse other peoples dogs.. all 3 of us remember your face, take a towel next time mate, you would probably need it at a guess. Darryl

lesson learnt
Submitted by mako magic on Sun, 2009-10-18 08:25Well with a day off yesterday and some nice weather i decided to head out on the river for a cruise and head over to carnac for a little while.
With the boat stored elsewhere and not being used for a few months i thought best bet turn the key and see if i have power..............nil, dead not a ounce of juice.
Checked the batteries and found the number one battery which is stored below deck level was full of water in the battery box, turns out last time i used the boat i must have forgotten and left the bung in and with all the rain we have had, the boat apparently was storing a bit of water. dohhhhhhhhhh
This in turn would have shorted the battery , drained the other one. So off to all boat business to get a new one, luckily once the new one was in it was all sorted, now to charge the number 2 battery and hope its ok, but im doubtful, so looks like im up for another battery as well.
At least it all got sorted in the end, though a few hundred dollars later we were out on the water.
Seen plenty of sea lions on the water , watching one eating a small banjo shark throwing it around, amusing the kids on the boat, then it was time to head back, cruising along i heard alot of cheering coming from a cray boat with a party on board, so over for a little closer look and wow couldnt believe my eyes, a chick was there amongst the guys totally starkers, jumping up and down stirring up all the passer by's, lol i almost got a slap when i said i might turn around and have a better look LOL.
Also good to see plenty of dolphins in the river.

A warning for all men
Submitted by Shorty on Sat, 2009-10-17 09:00Subject: Drug warning Police are warning all men who frequent clubs, partygoers and unsuspecting pub regulars to be alert and stay cautious when offered a drink from any woman. A date rape drug on the market called "beer" is used by many females to target unsuspecting men. The drug is generally found in liquid form and is now available almost anywhere. It comes in bottles, cans, from taps and in large "kegs." "Beer" is used by female sexual predators at parties and bars to persuade their male victims to go home and have sex with them. Typically, a woman needs only to persuade a guy to consume a few units of "beer" and then simply ask him home for no strings attached sex. Men are rendered helpless against this approach. After several "beers" men will often succumb to desires to perform sexual acts on horrific looking women to whom they would never normally be attracted. After drinking "beer" men often awaken with only hazy memories of exactly what happened to them the night before, often with just a vague feeling that something bad occurred. At other times these unfortunate men are swindled out of their life's savings in a familiar scam known as "a relationship." It has been reported that in extreme cases, the female may even be shrewd enough to entrap the unsuspecting male into a longer term form of servitude and punishment referred to as "marriage." Apparently, men are much more susceptible to this scam after "beer" is administered and sex is offered by the predatory female. Please! Forward this warning to every male you know. However, if you fall victim to this insidious "beer" and the predatory women administering it, there are male support groups with venues in every town where you can discuss the details of your shocking encounter in an open and frank manner with similarly affected, like-minded guys. For the support group nearest you, just look up "Golf Courses" in the yellow pages.

Life (well death really) Insurance
Submitted by HuggyB on Wed, 2009-10-14 16:45Who has it and who do people recommend as a good insurer to deal with?
I'm currently going through and updating my will etc and think I should probably have some kind of life insurance to supplement the one they "give you" with your superannuation. I'd be keen to hear people's thoughts.

What happened to Joondalup Fishing & Camping Store?
Submitted by Andy Mac on Wed, 2009-10-14 09:04I just drove past on my way to the post office and all the signs have been taken down, the doors were all closed and blinds drawn.
Last week when I went in the tills werent working but they were still trading, and Tony was busy loading a truck with camping gear from the mezanine level which seemed a little strange at the time but nothing was said. They didnt mention they were closing or moving locations, so if they have moved, there is no forwarding address on the door and if they have closed it looks like it was pretty sudden.
Hopefully not another victim of the large chain stores.
Anyone know if they have opened up elsewhere?
That was my local I've been visiting for near on 15 years, so now I feel a bit lost.
