Second barra trip
Submitted by sunshine on Thu, 2014-11-20 20:13My brother is visiting from the UK, his fifth trip here but only his second barra trip and he was taken out fishing the Ord by legendary Kununurra local Dick P.
He only managed a single fish......but what a fish measuring 127 cm ......I wonder how many serious barra fishermen would give their eye teeth to hook into such a stunning fish

Yellowfin and Yellowfin!
Submitted by beau on Sun, 2014-11-16 20:23Jumped on board Tim-o's crusher with Geoff78 yesterday chasing some yellow gold after Geoff had great success during the week. Started off really blowy so stayed in fairly close for the first half of the morning trolling and throwing stickbaits at schools of bonito, Pacific Ocean tuna poling style!
With bait sorted for Geoffs upcoming Kalbarri trip and a few of my shark fisho mates, and the wind slowly easing we headed out to Geoffs little pot of gold spot that had turned on for him during the week. Just as we threw the lures out I noticed 20 odd birds swooping the water about another mile further so cranked the lures back in and headed out to investigate. The birds dispersed on arrival but things looked promising so out went the lures again.
Mustve been about 5mins when my rod buckled over and drag screaming, the rod bouncing heavily in the holder, this was no bonnie! After a sizzling first run I started gaining line then spotted the gold nugget under the boat in crystal clear deep blue water, a sight I definitley wont forget in a hurry. Stoked with my very first yellowfin, yahoos and high fives all round.
Out went the lures again with Geoff and Tim on strike with me on bird spotting and fish tailing duties(ha ha). Another little bust up and some free jumping tuna a couple hundred metres away we dragged the lures towards them. The deep diver smacked first then Tims shallower lure was eaten. Unfortunately Tim pulled the hooks and Geoff landing his, similar size to the first fish. Threw the lures back in and a double hook-up but dropping both fish and that was the last we saw of the tuna for the day. Headed down to the Peel today for some more yellowfin action and it didnt dissapoint, with a handful of 30cm+ whiting, biggest going 35cm, and plenty of sub 30cm fish to keep us busy.
Feeling absolutely wrecked after 2 big days in the sun, the boss can expect a call in the morning, I think I need a day to recover! Big thanks to Tim and Geoff, learnt a lot of new things for something I had never really done before, cant wait to do it again wink wink Tim. Gonna be big summer for you mate. Cheers,
Beau

New Zealand Ranfurly banks trip November 2014
Submitted by Chris fish on Fri, 2014-11-14 20:00 after 24 years in WA i finally escaped and ventured off to the land of the long white cloud with a bunch of keen fishos abourd Enchanter charters for their first trip of the season to Ranfurly banks.
ill just put my photos up as im not sure what the others are doing but bit of a run down on the trip, we had both boats Cova Rose and Enchanter and Aussies on Enchanter and the Kiwis on Cova. We where on a 5 day trip that we got 4 days that where fishable, well basicaly we smashed the Kiwis with all 7 of us boating a fish over 30 on jig and a fish over 20 on surface. biggest fish for the trip went 37kg Kingy, 38kg Puka some nice snapper and my freak dory from 180m on an 800g jig. each day we would of landed 100 fish from 5-30kg between us and had some absolute smokings by monsters. the surface action on the last day was awesome!! something truly amazing about watching packs of 20kg kingys chasing down your lure before eating it and pull againt full drag like its nothing!! ive never fished such heavy drags or caught fish that pound for pound pull as hard as they do!!
my best fish of the trip was a 33kg kingy on jig, 15kg puka from 140m and 23kg king on surface. i got about 15-20 fish over 20kg myself and 2 over 30. such hard work and the most physically demanding fishing i have done but one of the best experiences ive had
gear i used was a JM tornado M pe4-8 with a pe6 JM reel spooled with varivas 10x10 jigging pe5 line and 170lb shock leader, swage GT82 with a 5500 Expo spooled with varivas max power casting pe6 and 100lb shock leader with a tailwalk gunz stickbait doing all the damage on the surface fish for me.

Fish of a lifetime!!!! Monster LB sambo
Submitted by Chris fish on Thu, 2014-11-13 20:40 havent been on here for a while and i have a fair few reports to put up soon including a recent trip to NZ chasing Kingys at ranfurly banks
ill start with this sambo because i still cant wipe the smile off my face at what i achieved yesterday arvo back at home in albany!!
was fishing a common rock spot just out of town for sambos or kings and after trying to get a lively to slide out and not being able to i rigged up the light setup while i left the 2 80lb setups out without baits ready to. anyway first cast with the light gear (300m of 20lb braid on a 4000 catalina and majorcraft KG Evo 962HH rod) bait hit the bottom and tap tap BOOM!!! i was on in a big way, huge headshakes had me calling it for a very big sambo before 100m of line dissapeared in a flash, felt the line touch reef so i backed off as this beast pulled the other 200m of line through the reef and out goes the backing knot, with about 20m left it finnaly stopped and i had to gently fight the fish on 6kg mono with the line still rubbing on the reef, 40 minutes and a tense 200m later the line came free of the reef but it was chaffed all along it so i had to go very easy on it, another 10 minutes and this huge silver shine rose from the depths and broke the surface!!! MONSTER SAMBO!!!! as i was fishing on the ledge on my own it took another 20 minutes to cliff gaff it and when i tried to pull it up with the rope gaff i finally understood how big this fish actually was, draggged it up the top and my friend took some photos for me but as i had to rope down a face to the ledge she stayed up the top and watched it all.
this is a fish of a lifetime for me and im still shocked how i managed to pull this off!! not going to put up a weight but its 160cm long and 144cm fork and the biggest sambo ive ever seen in person. still cant wipe the smile off my face!!

Bit of fun yesterday
Submitted by beau on Sun, 2014-11-02 07:22Had a bit of fun yesterday with the salmon and some big tailor that are schooling with them. Got bitten off using whole herring 4 times, some brute greenbacks swimming around. Younger brother managed to stay connected to a nice one.
PS. Sorry Browndog, I know I promised a tailor/salmon session but it was a late minute decision to stay in close as the wind was playing silly buggers.

Exmouth April / May 2014
Submitted by timwalden on Sat, 2014-10-25 04:59Hi there folks!
After an amazing trip last year, i just couldn't resist a return trip to Exxy this year. Two of us made the mammoth journey from the UK this time, and once again it was well worth it. Our plan was to fish on lures for queenies, and bonefish (plus whatever else came along) on flies. In addition, we had a day booked with Brett of True Blue Bonefish.
To kick things off, we started with spending the days lure fishing and the nights after sharks.
x
Only a nurse shark, but it was a first night fish!
Big 'cuda
First lemon shark of the trip
A few days in was our trip with Brett. The weather was wrong for bones, so we fished the gulf for whatever came along! Sadly our fly casting was useless, but becuase Brett is such an amazing guide, we both caught loads of trevally and queenies. A great day with a brilliant guide.
After a great day with Brett, we continued to explore behind the reef, and eventually found some bonefish! We only had spin gear that day, but planned a return 2 days later.
But it wasn't to be! As you well know, Exmouth had a spot of rain, and for 2 days we had to hide and drink beer! fishing was out of the question. When roads eventually started to open, the national park was closed, so bonefish were out of the question.
It wasn't just the roads that suffered. Because of the rain, the normally turquoise sea turned this colour!
So a change of plan was in order. We spent the rest of our time driving round trying to find clear water. It was tough, but we did catch a few fish! As it was hard, we tried some bait fishing, and caught a few school macks on balloons, and loads of spanglies on whatever we threw at them! And boy do they taste good! I won't bore you with too many words, but here's a few snaps of what we caught. I've fished a few spots around the world, and Exmouth is easily my favourite. What an amazing place. I'll be back!

PB Ray.
Submitted by BoozeFishSnooze on Wed, 2014-10-22 03:59PB Ray was a bit of a challenge making sure he stayed away from moorings but was good fun, First fish caught on overhead gear cheers to flangies for the triton so far hasn't missed a beat, handled it beyond expectations. It fought a bit harder than the average squid or herring haha. And yes he was released waited for him to cruise off before calling it as a successful release.
If the pictures are a bit too big I'll sort them out soon.

Dhufish on whiting rig
Submitted by richie68 on Fri, 2014-10-10 18:02Went out with Heath the other day from Cockburn, just past five fathom bank. Good conditions, caught a few fish. Drifted off a lump, Heath says lets go around again. Hang on a second, Im getting a couple of (small) nibbles. Anyway, start to wind up my line and about 10 seconds later something goes BANG and im on. Something has hit me on the way up I say to Heath, calling it for a sambo. Few big runs, maybe its a big pinkie. Anyway bring it up to the boat, and blow me down its a Dhufish. Got it in, and it had taken the bottom hook rigged for kgs. 2 snelled 1/0 mustad hoodlums, with a tiny strip of skinned occy. Couldn't believe it!
Went 12kg fat as and 90cm. My best dhufish so far... Stoked!

Pinkies Monday night
Submitted by tim-o on Tue, 2014-10-07 22:08Inspired by talkin to Mick C tonight, I just spent f#@kin ages typin up a story and my phone went flat, so you aint gettin shit now lol. Short story, I cant catch pinkies coz Im crap, failed on many occasions solo, failed with Rosie a number of times, failed with Mick, albeit I was fishin placcys and jigs, failed with Beau, I got bad JUJU according to Bobo, all of which have 'got me closer' mind you, so took a confident Geoff78 last night to my 'little' spot and it worked, bloody stoked to get the monkey off the back, although it woulda been better if I got my second (gettin greedy now hah) but we called it a night (I know, someone has named it night already) and Geoff got crook at the end anyhow from something, (Im glad I didnt try any of his scotch and coffee....) thanks for not gettin any chunder on the boat mate. Although, I did delay cleaning up as much as possible with a fresh tailor slab drifty out haha, I am not complaining. Family had a good feed tonight off one side, as good as dhu I reckon. Good to meet another fellow fishwrecker, onya Geoff. Sorry for shit phone pics, forgot me camera and the pics were taken after being spiked so dorsal is down etc...
