Submitted by Spence on Thu, 2011-09-15 09:40Went out last night, after my uncle made the news in search of these snapper that were getting chomped by great whites.
Found them, along with 2 great whites. One was about 3m+, the other 5m+.
These two snapper went:

Two Days of Fishing the Metro
Submitted by monstaf1sh on Wed, 2011-09-14 21:12Tuesday morning I went out with my mates out of cockburn and had a great day out there.
4 of us on the boat landed a good feed taking home 3 KG whiting each and a few other bread and butter fish, the biggest KGW was 46cm
I also caught my first fish (Skippy) on a flick bait so was pretty pleased with myself.
Wednesday went for a short flick in the Canning and landed my first Flatty and Bream on soft plastics! Yeah Boii!
Almost decided to keep the flatty but ended up releasing them both.
My confidence has grown using the soft plastics now that i know I can actually catch fish on them. ;)

One Week of Metro Kayak-fishing
Submitted by JohnSorrell on Tue, 2011-09-13 11:26Hi Everyone,
For the last week, my mate Kevin from over east joined me for a week long kayak fishing holiday, with the target to get into one of our big pink snapper. The first 5 days were spent kayaking around Cockburn sound, but the fish just didn't show.. Eventually we came across one school, but kevs 1st hookup busted off before he knew what happened... I did managed to find a few snapper over these days to keep him going, but it was seriously hard work. (with a 92cm 11kg+ my best for the week.)
40 hours of fishing for doughnuts was too much for Kev, so we gave up on cockburn sound and with a perfect weather forecast, we borrowed my old mans Riviera and headed to Rottnest for his last couple of days in Perth.
We arrived at lunchtime, setup the kayaks and headed out. I trolled an 8m+ RMG for most of the afternoon, which was smashed every 10 mins by a handful of 60cm+ snapper, midsized Sambos, and at the end of the day, a stripy TUNA! Also, between trolling, we hooked into a couple of Dhufish on SP’s. But Kevin was still not having any luck on the snapper front...
The next day, I hooked up Kevin with my spare 8m+ RMG to troll around, and soon enough he was getting into the fish!...At about lunchtime, the water glassed off and my lure was smashed by a solid 85cm snapper… Soon after landing this fish, I put him on top of the school, which he dropped down a sp and somehow pulled a very decent sambo out of it. Funny thing was, before I had a chance to get a snap of this fish, he released it, saying 'dont worry... ill catch a bigger one' ... im thinking, 'yeh right'
Not long after, trolling again, i turn around to see Kevin hooked up on something very very solid. 20 mins watching an epic battle, up comes the biggest fish I've seen landed on a kayak (in person). A monster Samson Fish of around 30kg+ trolled up on a HB lure… The smile on his face says it all and what a way to end his holiday, with Kev taking out the biggest fish of the week in our last 2 hours of fishing.

Swan River Tailor
Submitted by Swan River Fisher on Sun, 2011-09-11 14:15Hey Guys, went for a fish around the Raffles today and ended up with some fun chopper tailor, around 20-30cm big. Not huge but heaps of fun on light gear and when you can see them strike the lure. Lure was a Halco RMG 52 Laser Pro.
Also, was there a fishing comp on? Maybe Swanfish? We saw lots of boats going in the same direction, majority of them were bream boats with bow-mounted electric motors.
Cheers Ben

Broke my Mulloway virginity
Submitted by Mick71 on Fri, 2011-09-09 22:43Went fishing tonight NOR for a couple of hours LB. Caught a bit of a mixed bag, Whiting, Flat-Head, Herring and Tailor, then everything went quiet for about 1/2 an hour.
Threw my last Mullie, and had a bit of a tug with quite a good run, initially though it was a ray, not much head shake or anything, went for about 20 min, then my first Mulloway appeared, measured 89cm and just over 5kgs, was stoked.
Went home with a big smile on my face, all-in-all was a good night out.

White sturgeon off the list
Submitted by sunshine on Fri, 2011-09-09 08:34
During a recent trip to BC I finally got the opportunity, despite the Fraser River being in flood, to chase the elusive white sturgeon which are fully protected (catch and release and even electronic tagging of large fish) in Canada
The gear was supplied by the guide and looked fairly basic particularly the sinkers which were actually railway spikes zip tied to the line but when you saw massive logs screaming past in the flood waters the approach was practical if nothing else.
In the part of the Fraser we fished salmon parts (stinky old bits of rotting salmon) were banned and we used very small dead eels as bait - I didn't hold up much of a hope given the state of the river until only an hour into our session my wife - ladies first - took the first bite and hooked and landed a fish a little over a metre which the guide promptly tagged as small..........hmmmmmmm
A few hours past and apart from the occasional apparent touch (or debris hitting the line as it whipped past downstream) nothing further until the tiniest of touches signified a fish was near, weight went on and I set the hook and all hell broke loose, being a bottom feeder I was not expecting almost six feet of fish to suddenly leap into the air in an amazing aerial display before diving deep and using every bit of flood current to it's advantage. A stalemate then developed for over ten minutes with little line lost but none gained either but slowly the fight was going my way and the deep swirls indicated i was winning. The guide waded in and as it passed he tail grabbed it dragging it to shore.
What a truly wierd looking fish, tiny eyes (in that dirty water it couldnt see anything anyway) but given there are prehistoric fossils of this fish and it has remained unchanged for millions of years it has obviously got something right other than rich people wanting it's roe as caviar.
Here is the pic - another fish ticked off the list - anyone heading that way (just downstream of Lilloet in British Columbia) then I would strongly recommend the guide we used
www.sturgeonfishing.com - to find fish when the river was running so high and so dirty speaks strongly of their ability as guides - top operation !

Dad's Day
Submitted by NavyGirl on Tue, 2011-09-06 13:28Hey guys,
Headed out on Sunday with the old man, the boyfriend and the dog for a quick spin and a bit of jigging. It was an awesome day, nice and sunny a little lumpy to begin with but it soon calmed down. It was the dog's first time out on the boat, he wasn't too sure what to make of it, he certainly didn't like the jetty though. He crawled on his belly out to the boat which, although made me feel bad was pretty funny.
So we took off and set out our jigs for a bit of drifting. 1st hour went by with nothing except a bit of weed and the old man catching himself. Then the next half hour went by and it wasn't looking good. Then !BAM! Dad's on, expecting it to be the bottom nobody really got excited until the squid hit the surface, and what a squid! But as we all know, with squid you've got let them have their squirts before pulling them up and near your face. I think Dad was a bit too excited. *PFFFTHT* Ink everrrrrrrrrrrrywhere. All over the roof, his face, his shirt, the seats, the carpet and the dog (which is ok, 'cause he's black anyway) Once we cleared most of it away (Dad's shirt now bears the scars of squid) we admired the finely sized squid. Then it was back on again and in the next half hour the boyfriend pulled 2 more in, nothing comparable to Dad's as he let us all know. Being the type to stir he also went on and on how I had caught nothing, not even a cold. Soon it was time to head in. So, being the typical female I started to sulk with the whole, "where's my squid?" and the bottom lip out. Then as I was ready to reel in in defeat when I felt the weight! So I reeled him and let my dad know aaaall about it. Winner :) Still, nowhere near his squid's size but it was the 2nd biggest one of the day. And being the top chick I am, I gave one to the old bloke next door, gutted and all.
So all in all, I'm pretty sure we made Dad's day.

Keep Barra
Submitted by damo6230 on Sat, 2011-09-03 18:08
Having the 5 week fishing itch it was time to hit the water
I haven't fished the Keep since about 2002 so after being here for a while now it was time to go..........
Two crews headed out, Bob and I in his tinnie and Nick and Jamie in Jamie's tinnie.
The Keep is only really servicable with small boats. It's tight boggy launching/retrieving.
Nick backing down to launch
Just about done, even had to use the winch to pull the Lux out.........
It was a mix of trolling, casting and trolling for the day and we pulled mobs of Barra, nothing big but plenty of action.
Barra surgery
Bob's first for the day
Couple for me
Plenty of these.......
POC has been making his own plastics and he graciously sent me some last week..... so I 'tied one on'.......
I dropped two Barra but boated this Jack
Very good plastics mate
Looking forward to using the rest.
Nick grabbed one and three casts later also had a Barra
Killer lures for the day were the Mad Mullet 2.5" and Killalure Flatz Rat 2 (hint hint POC)
Just to the left of this ramp is a solid rockbar and I dropped a HORSE here today.......
Was all over in seconds...........

Abrohlos Day Trip Jig Sesh...
Submitted by TWITCHEMUP on Fri, 2011-09-02 18:37Hi crew well with the weather looking the best I had seen it for a long time plans were set for a 3 boat mission to head to Abrohlos Islands for a day run earlier this week, a quick chat to fellow members bouttime and ringy and a couple of other mates saw the plan come together..
The plan for my boat was to go get our jig on (plastics and jigs) and maybe chase a few bait balls if the opportunity presents it self...
We meet at the Gero boat ramp at 5.45am and were underway by 6.30am, the run accross was insane with no swell to speak of and flat seas we were at Hummock Island and dropping a jig to the bottom in 40m before 8am..
The conditions were the best I have seen for a long time and were like this for the whole day...
First mark of the day the HDS looks good and sure enough my 80gm jig is crunched and up comes this healthy Dhu caught on PE 2...
While I was busy battling my Dhu Mak aka Fishncrazy hooks up on placcy and lands his first Coral Trout for the day which was to be one of many..
Next drop and Mak's plastic is smashed before it even hits the bottom and this fish is doin it's best to stitch him up, after a short but tough fight Mak has this 640mm Trout esky bound...
The next hour or 2 was spent sounding for ground and catching numerous Coral Trout, Dhu Fish, Baldys and a couple Pink Snapper with countless double hookups through out the morning...
By mid morning the conditions were really starting to turn it on with the ocean turning into a giant mirror...
Things had started to go a little quiet wth the sun up high and very little movement, every now and then one of us would get severly bricked by a thumper Trout in 12-20m... when all of a sudden I looked over the side as a massive school of Grey Mackerel swims by just a few meters below the boat...
I quickly drop down my jig a quick wind up and BANG I had this fellow singing that song on PE 1..
Not long after Mak had his placcy crunched by a serious Mack and has a battle on his hands... I look over to the other boys in the Haines in the background who are casting poppers and watch as a nice Macky rise's and smashes there popper.. Great fun...
Everyone is hooked up to good Macks and getting smoked was a great little sesh, we managed to catch and release 4 Grey Macks in total 2 each to plastics and jigs...
I did throw a bullchop at the school but was out of luck enticing a surface strike...
After the hot Macky sesh I dropped down a plastic and nailed this tasty Baldy good fun on PE 2 and was dispatched into the esky soon after...
Another solid 600mm Trout that fell victim to a Squidgy Shad worked well off the bottom...
As the arvo went on we continued to jig up countless Coral Trout, Dhu fish, Sambo's and Baldys...
Bouttime and crew doin there thing not far off Hummock Island...
A quick underwater snap of a Whale that was duck diving just meters under the boat... a touch freaky but it's amazing what ya see out there...
Late in the arvo after catching plenty of smaller models Mak comes up trumps with this solid plastic munchin Dhu...
And to finish out the day after being bricked badly on his placcy out fit I convinced Mak to drop down a jig on PE 3 and 4 or 5 drops later he finds himself connected to yet another good Trout, not bad for his first shot at butterfly jigging...
What a top day with soooo many solid fish caught our arms, wrists and backs were thankful to be going home.. We set sail for home around 5.10pm and were back at the ramp by 6.45pm..
The ground we fished was mainly between 12 - 42m and the fish that were not kept were all released fine with only 3 or 4 needing the release weight..
It was great to get out with some mates and share the experiance we will be doin it again soon I'm sure..
As always cheers for taking the time to read...

Had a great day!
Submitted by beau on Sun, 2011-08-28 18:06Got the tip off from Duffman lastnight on Facebook that my story and photo was in the Sunday Times today so I started off the morning on a great note having a quick squizz before heading out for a snapper hunt.
The plan for todays fishing was to have the ski on the water by sunrise and out to our spot just after 5mins to give ourselves the best chance to get onto some Pink Snapper. Everything went to plan and the conditions were awesome and first drop resulted in a nice skippy for me on 5inch powerbait plastic and a just undersize Pink Bream for Dad on a drifting mulie.
The burley attracted plenty of skippy and I got well and truly stuck into them on the SP's and one good sized one to Dad.
I hooked onto something a bit heavier and was stoked to see my first dhuie under the ski, awesome looking dhu-pup!
I got snagged and while I was re-rigging the light easterly wind drifted us off the back off the reef and onto flat sand and just as I was about to start the ski and head back over the reef Dads mulie got smashed and line was burning off the reel. After about a minute into the fight I realised I was going to have to chase this fish down as he was heading straight for the reef about 30m away. After another couple minutes we caught a glimpse of a nice pink flash just under the surface and then eventually got the fish boatside where I got a gaff shot in! Gotta love it when a plan comes together!
Hooking the fish off the back edge got me thinking they were on the flat sand and 2 drifts later I hooked a lil Pink Bream on Mccarthy SP, again over sand about 20-30m away from any structure.
We had a lot of people come up to us at the ramp amazed we got stuck into some good fish off the jetski and stinkin boaties not catching much :)

Josh's early mornin cold water Baz
Submitted by mullows on Sat, 2011-08-20 16:36Went for an early morning Barra bash with Daisy and my young bloke Josh. Bit chilly heading out but Josh managed to pull this one out on the troll with the temp at 19.5C. Went 600mm on the lie detector and went back after a bit of a swim. The bugger then got another at about 700mm+ but lost it on it's second jump. Top way to spend a saturday morning.
