Submitted by jng on Fri, 2011-08-19 07:33Couple of fish we caught on thursday 18/8/11. My pb pinky of 96cm which bottomed out my 11kg scales when i got home. Caught on a 5inch snapback in 12metres of water. on 20lb, Went like a train.
We hooked another couple of suspected pinkies on the same location but the hooks pulled.
Marko (hookt) which came out for the ride also managed a nice queen snapper and a 60cm dhui.
Thanks

A few fish of late
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2011-08-18 18:00Thought it was a bout time I put these pics up. Got a nice queeny and flatty on my new threadybuster the other day. Really rapped in the performance of this thing. It vibrates like crazy and looks insanely good in the water.
Been getting a good swag of flatty on the 3inch berkly minnow grub as well. Caught 5 on Monday and 8 today. Only 3 of these were legal so all the rest went back. Thinkn I have to go a larger hook on my jighead though. Im really happy with the weight of the 1/12th TT head but the size 1 hook is a bit too small for the larger flatty. I lost a 2 really good fish today which would have been close to mid 60's. This hook seems ideal for small to average flatty but too small for the big girls. Ideally, I wanted a 1/12th with a 1/0 hook but they never had any at the shop so got the size 1 instead.
Anyways here are a few pics

Fishing in Amsterdam
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Sat, 2011-08-13 00:59Just got back from a few weeks in London / Europe, while I was over there I teed up a day of fishing with one of Amsterdam's guides and got a taste for the freshwater fishing over there.
We mainly caught Zander which are similar to the Yankee Walleye but apparently fight a lot harder and a couple of Perch (our Redfin). There was the chance of a big Pike but we didn't try for them, the fishing was good enough not to worry about it.
Anway here are a few pics of the trip, the better ones should be in an article sometime soon with a summary of how the trip went, so I can't put up the good stuff.
My first Zander, got him on a softie of some sort
Some of the kit, can't remember the rods we were using but it was teamed up with an older Twin Power 4000
How's the size of this wind turbine! They're everywhere over there
'Perch'
A few of the local carp fishos with their enormous fishing poles
Probably the best Zander of the day caught by Juul (Yool) that must have checked in somewhere around the 55cm mark
The teeth on one of the larger ones I caught, this one was on bait

Scratched that jigging itch again...
Submitted by TWITCHEMUP on Mon, 2011-08-08 14:00Hi crew well it's been a while since I threw up a report but with the weather and swell finally easing for the day the Twitch couple decided to get out for a jig while we could....
We headed out yesterday (Sunday the 7th) from my local ramp (Port Denison) the forecast was for light NW/NE winds with a 2.5m easing swell but with a 100% chance of rain so we loaded up the wet weather gear and of we went...
I decided to play it safe with the storm front looming in the distance and stay inshore untill we had sussed the conditions out fully...
First stop was my "secret" Trout mark and after 2 drifts and getting smoked into the coral below 3 times in a row on PE 3 and donating $100 worth of jigs to the Trout I decided to head to the next spot..
Next spot in 32m produced these little fellas (Sambo's) one after another, here's the missus with one that nailed her 7 inch Mcarthy placcy on the drop... good fun on 10lb gear.....
After spending an hour or 2 catching 1 - 4kg Sambos mixed in with heaps of 450 - 600mm Pink Snapper, the weather was getting better and the storm front seem to be holding off and with no sign of rain coming we headed for a mark I had been hanging to drop jigs and plastics on for quite a while.....
Upon arrival the HDS lit up big time with a whole lot of action goin on below I couldn't tie on a jig quick enough...
Here is the HDS showing Dhuie schools sitting under the bait mixed with Sambo's and Pink Snapper... Gotta love seeing the sounder look like that....
First drop one jig up and bang on big time to a thumper Dhu on PE 2 that spat the jig and re ate it 3 times in a row (all on video some great footage) on the 3rd hit I finally hooked up solid but after an epic battle the big Dhu banger spat the assist hook once again and didn't come back for round 4....
Next drop after losing the big fella this healthy Dhu smashed the Ima Ro...
By this stage the fish were going off with almost a fish a drop smackin our jigs and plastics... This 550mm Red Throat Emperor was a surprise and came well off the bottom to nail the Ro...
After playing around on the PE 1 - 2 gear I just had to brake out my new Shimano Terez PE 2-3 stick (to be released soon) and instantly hooked up solid to.......
.... this 580mm Baldy which gave the Terez a work out...
After nailing the Baldy I couldn't help myself and had to switch back to PE 2 and sure enough the biggest fish of the day this 12kg Sambo crunched the jig mid water and gave me one hell on a fight.. Happy days....
Then around 3pm it turned into Dhu o clock with a Dhu a drop for close to an hour the Dhu schools had moved in big time although no monsters all between 500 - 670mm... still cant complain and a great way to top of the day we even left them biting which was not easy to do lol...
Total for the day was 21 Dhu's (2 kept), 20 odd Sambo's, 10 or so smallish Pinkys, 2 x Baldys (1 kept) and a Red Throat Emp (kept) all other fish were released fine with only 1 Dhu needing the release weight. Great day out with the missus with so many fish on the chew before the storm front was due to hit, which funny enough held of untill we were back at the ramp around 5pm..
Cheers for the read as always crew..

my PB snapper on a plastic
Submitted by skrewloose on Sun, 2011-08-07 15:52hey guys
i had a great day today out of rockingham catching snapper on plastics. me and my mate justin left the ramp just on sun up and within 5 mins we were at our spot. we set the pick and started the burly trail of cubed mulies and chook pellets. after 10 mins of nothing justin hooks up using a 4'' gulp and lands a lovely 6kg snapper.
after seeing him hook up and bust off on 4 other fish over the next half hour i thought its was time to chuck a lure around my self using my faithful diawa triforce and my spanking new FWA 8-10kg plastics rod i threw out a 5'' gulp jerk shad and after a few cast hooked and landed my PB snapper on a lure and the first size snapper i have caught out of a boat. it weighed dead on 10kg and measured 820mm to the fork.
after landing my snapper we shot off the the inside edge of the 5 and managed a bag of nice sand whiting and a couple of 40cm skippy. then we enjoyed a short run to the ramp in glassed off conditions after a lumpy start to the day.
cheers ethan

Quick trip out with the boys..
Submitted by TWITCHEMUP on Wed, 2011-07-27 17:22Hi crew quick report from a couple of weekends ago, fw members Nelly and Brody headed up to my neck of the woods (Dongara) for the weekend. The plan was to chase a few winter Tailor and hopefully get out and jig up a few Dhus and Coral Trout if weather permitted...
I had to work the Sat morning and by the time I headed out in the boat around 3.30pm Nelly and Brody had already been out all day and were heading home. A quick hello on the way past and the boys headed for the ramp while I continued on another 5 km to my secret Trout spot.
First drop on my "secret" spot and this 700mm Trout nailed my 145mm Squidgy flickbait... (sorry Neil and Brody)
After catching a few small Dhuies and Sambo's for an hour or so we headed back in.
The next day (Sunday) Neil and Brody and I set off early chasing Tailor on stickbaits and poppers with 10 or so Tailor caught for the morning a quick arvo jig session was in order...
One of the many rat Sambo's that fell to a 55gm butterfly jig, we had a few double and triple hookups on these little fellas...
Next up was Brody with a tasty little Dhu that smashed his Shout jig..
After a few small Dhus a couple of huge bust offs Nelly briefly hooked up to what we suspect was a horse Trout but unfortunately the 20lb leader was not enough to put the breaks on before smoking poor Nelly into the coral below.. oh well there's always next time aye boys..
Good weekend with lots of laughs and a few fish caught cheers boys see ya again next time..

West end Tuna on the weekend - yellowfin??
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Wed, 2011-07-27 09:18Hi guys
Sunday we headed out to take my mates boat for a run -been sat for some time and he wanted to give it a blast - headed over to rotto with the intent of going to the pub for a quick bite - had a few issues on the way over with the seastrainers (were full of cr @p) so after cleaning these out we gave the pub a miss and headed to the westend for a look - saw a couple of birds diving about 1 mile out from catheral rocks and with only a few rods on board and two lures we threw in a laser pro 190 and halco trembler (gold) -as we trolled out to the 40m mark both lures were hit - Mark lost his and i got mine in :-)
weighed 17kg - i thought at first it was a yellow fin - but couple of guys at the yacht club suggested it may have been a big eye?? - no camera on board unfortunately so this was the best pic we got with a mobile...
a great day out in the end -some tuna steaks for dinner (for a while!!) just goes to show you should always be prepared!
pics/link below (sorry still have not got this mastered!)

Horrocks Trip Report
Submitted by Buz on Wed, 2011-07-27 01:01Gday all, well thought i better get some keyboard time up me and finally post up a report on my trip up to Horrocks with my Girlfriend Anna. WARNING it is a very long report!
Headed up to Horrocks beach during the first week of the School Holidays with my Girlfriend for a mixture of fishing, boating, snorkelling, 4x4ing and sightseeing(overnight trip to Kalbarri Sea Cliffs and Gorges).
I took my trusty old Hilux with soon to be sold tinnie in tow. As i am selling it to my brother in a few days time i thought i would like to have one last fishing trip in it, seeing that the last time i used it was at Horrocks also but in July 2009. Even put a new Lowrance HDS5x in between trips, so definitely had to try it out for at least once!!!
So we left Perth at 6am and arrived in Horrocks at around 3pm after a stop to shop and check out Geraldton, and battling every hill my Hilux encountered whilst towing the boat up there. Yep wont miss dropping down to third gear and 50km/h crawling up hills with a new Turbo Diesel 4x4 to be bought soon. Mind you we did take the coast road the whole way and i'll say there seemed to be fewer hills to struggle up.
So after arriving and unloading everything, took the missus for a tour around town. Took all of 2 mins. Then took her for a tour of some of the Land Based fishing locations, with my rod of course. Resulted in a hooked and dropped Tailor arond the 50cm mark i guess. So packed in for the night and went back to prep the boat for the next coming day.
First whole day, i got up at 6am to try my luck where i had dropped my Tailor the evening before. The spot came up with the goods with me landing 4 Tailor during the session with the biggest going 60cm(Pic 1) Good way to start a trip! Back to the chalet to load the tinnie up and head out with Anna. After a pleasant beach launch we were on our way out the gap in the reef towards the open ocean(about 1km offshore hahaha).
Upon getting out we were straight away greeted by the sight of birds working the surface, which to me screamed Tuna. So after screaming over to the surface action in a jiffy we were both throwing metals and retrieveing like crazy into the school. This resulted in us landing 3 Northern Bluefin Tuna each(pic 2-3). Was absolutly stoked! I had missed this sort of spinning for Tuna since out last trip up here. We ended up keeping one for some fresh Tuna that night and released all the others.
The rest of the day went slow with only a undersized Sambo being caught. Oh well no Dhui's or Pinkies for today so headed back in to try our luck at Tailor in the reef whitewash for some fun. Back inside the reef lagoon i drove the tinnie as close to the reef as safe to, and Anna let fly with a Gardie on gangs straight into the surf. She only got to put the bail arm over and start to turn the handle when she was on. TAILOR! What started out as a pretty slow fight and me telling Anna to harden up and get the fish in, turned into quiet a battle as the Tailor must have realised what was going on and sought to scream back over the reef shallows. After a lengthy fight and a hell of alot of tricky boat manouvering to avoid the surf hitting side on and shallow reef Anna got it boatside. Well i said it to her then and i'll probably keep saying it to her for a long time, 'I have never seen a Tailor that big in real life!' I netted her into the boat got some pics weighed her and released her succesfully back to menace bait schools once more. Ended up being 6.4kg and 87cm(Pic 4,5,6). It was one FAT tailor. After a beauty like that one i was happy to return for that day. Fresh Tuna for dinner with some nice brews! Great first day!
Day two started with a sleep in(decided to give the LB Tailor a rest) and heading out in the tinnie again. Before headin outside the reef i wanted to have a crack and see if i could get a monster Tailor also in the reef surf. One cast, one 64cm Tailor. Not bad, but not as big as Anna's. After that one i wanted to get outside while the weather was still calm and have a crack at some demersals again. We were again greeted apon getting out by masses of Northern Bluefin Tuna again busting up surface, so after having a bit of fun with us each catching and releasing one each we started to drift fish in earnest. After about an hour of nothing in 6m of water my rod started screaming like mad! Grabbed it and straight away felt immense power, that and it started to tow the tinnie a bit. I straight away assumed Sambo. Oh well after an hour of nothing a bit of fun was welcome.
After giving me a hell of a work out and towing the boat around a fair bit i got her boatside and into the net. Took some quick snaps and released her(Pic 7). I guess such an immense fight in shallow water had buggered her a fair bit as we had to swim her beside the boat putting forward for about 5 mins before she swam off. In the shallow water we saw her return to the bottom and cruise off. Very satisfying to know that she swam off good, i hate the thought of killing such an awesome creature if your not going to keep it to eat.
After the Sambo we decide to head out deeper to 20m. First drop and i was on. Fought very strange with lots of head shakes and runs but not much weight. Soon surface as a little Blacktip Shark(Pic 8). The interesting thing was though when it came up there were somewhere between 20-25 other sharks some alot bigger some around the same size all following it up. With it still on the hooks boatside i threw in some mullies and sure enough a school of sharks came up and started smashing the mullies. It was awesome seeing that many sharks like that all in feeding mode in glassy water with vis down to 10m. Now i have been to the Rowleys and seen up to 10 sharks at a time behind the boat but to see 20-25 seemingly schooling awesome! They even bloted out the screen on the Lowrance!, from under the boat to the bottom, so i guess there were more down out of view.
Well with all the sharks around we decide to move away before trying to drfit again. Resulted in a nice Pinkie of 52cm and about 4 big dumb NW Blowies. After the Blowies had chomped their way through many traces and a couple of plastics, we decided to call it quits and head back in. Had a crack at the Tuna again on the way back in and we got two each and released them all but one for some fresh Tuna and also for our Chalet neighbour as he wasnt having much luck Land Based. And got another Tailor in the reef surf inside the lagoon which also relased well on the way back to the ramp.
Day three i decided to give the boat a rest and just do some spinning from the land early morning. My first spots turned up nothing after an hour so decided to do some exploring with the aid of google earth on my phone(ahhh technology hey!). Saw a spot that looked decent on the phone so pulled up there and had a flick with a metal. First cast 70cm Tailor(Pic 9), second cast another 70cm Tailor. I had encountered a school, and there were HEAPS. It was like salmon season, everytime i retrieved the lure there would be 7-8 monster Tailor all chasing it at once with me hooking up every cast for what seemed like nearly 30 mins! My PB came at Tailor 4. It put up a stirling fight and just wouldnt give in for ages right in the beach line. Ended up going 89cm!!!!!(Pic 10-11) Absolutly stoked.
Have never experience Tailor fishing so hot. Ended up landing 14 Tailor and dropping 9. All Tailor were released and swam off well. Well after a session like that i took the rest of the day off to do some snorkelling in the shallow reef lagoon with Anna. Was absolutly beautiful. Its no Abrolhos or Ningaloo, but sure beats anything at Rotto or Perth! Didnt even bother having a crack in the afternoon, just did some 4x4 lessons for Anna which she got the hang of very quickly. Planned to try my Tailor spot again the next morning with the intention of Anna catching here first LB Tailor.
Day Four started with us at the Tailor spot before the grey light had even started. Straight away it was on again. Anna dropped 4 Tailor before manging to land one at an awesome 71cm(Pic 12). Bloody good effort for a first LB Tailor! After that i had a crack again and manged to land 3 more around the 70cm mark and drop 5 more(Pic 13). All Tailor were released bar one that had swallowed the metal right down its throat. Oh well we had fresh Tailor on the BBQ for breakie that morning! Stopped in to see some of the Aboriginal Rock art in the area on the way back into town(Pic 14-15). Pretty awesome, you would think you were somewhere like Uluru!
The next two days, Five and Six, saw us head up to Kalbarri to do some sightseeing of the Gorges and the Sea Cliffs. Pretty awesome stuff. Anna had never been to this part of W.A before so she was soaking it in big time. I had a go fishing Chinamans one night for Mulloway, but didnt get anything by 9pm so called it quits. Also did some Horse Riding at Big River Ranch, bloody fun as, though have now figured out how fast a 'canter' is on a horse. Wasnt really prepared the first go and nearly shat myself. More fun than a rollercoaster i thought though. Though by the fourth crack at a canter i was well into it and loving it. Also some great scener as you ride along the banks and at times in the Murchison River(Pic 16). Nice natured horses too. If your ever up that way and have ever wondered what its like to ride a horse i highly recommend it. Lots of fun, well priced, great horses and very professional staff.
Day Seven saw us back at Horrocks with me determinded to try and catch a LB Tailor on my Trout spinning gear(Pic 17). Well i suceeded albeit smaller than the other Tailor we had encountered previously, but still put up an awesome fight on 2kg line! That night we headed up to the mouth of the Hutt to see if we could find any Mulloway at the broken river mouth. Alas i think my fishing luck had run out and left by 10pm.
Day Eight was spent packing everything up and strapping the boat all down for the tow home. Stopped in at The Pinnicles on the way home. Pretty cool place. I didnt realised some were so tall!
All in all was an absolutly mega trip. Probably the best trip i have ever had up there out of 6 trips over the last 10 years. Anna had a ball to so i think we both will be planning on heading up there again next year, but without the tinnie, so will be purely landbased. But hey if those mega Tailor are around again i definitely wont be complaining.
Buz.
Also put some pics in of the local Ospreys, one even showing me how to catch fish!

Spearing Pics
Submitted by poddyfish on Sun, 2011-07-24 21:12Hi guys
Been awhile between post for me so thought id throw some fish myself and a few lads have shot in the last couple of months!
First pic is from awhile back local off gero - Adreno's Chris Piero with his first & possibly only WA Dhufish est 12-14kg. Chris is from QLD and a top bloke! Capable of 2:30 breathholds and the stories he told that day of doing 30m plus freedives where unreal!
Myself with a late season inshore Spanish
Good mate Toddy with his first decent Dhu on the spear
Regular FW member Flagpole with his first Dhu taken freediving - Stoked he was with this 8.6kg fish!
Myself with a 9kg dhu out of 13m
Not a bad 2 fish limit 5mins from home!
Regular dive buddy Rob with his new pb 12kg dhu
Most recent trip was to the islands where we managed some nice fish including this 17kg Spaniard to Toddy
Found some good ground that was LOADED with Stodger Trout! This fella went 6.5kg and took alot of extraction!
Toddy with a GOOD trout for himself
The trip to the islands was one of my best of late but spent more time with the new contour video camera than the still aka lack of shots. Spanish macks where thickkkkkkkkkkk as where big trout , baldies and the like. Also managed some ripper squid at night on the pick which have been converted into some beaut dinners
All these pics where taken of the course of maybe 2 months before someone pipes up and says im a slayer of sorts =)
Enjoy

Wednesday Report
Submitted by Luke R on Fri, 2011-07-15 10:02Hey All
Got out on wednesday and finally got some good weather, the last two times iv been out the weather has been completely wrong to the report so it was great to have such beautiful weather on wednesday. The plan was to go OVER THE EDGE but upon getting out there and doing a few drops the current got the better of us, we couldnt even hold bottom with 100oz. We decided to head in shallower and do some jigging for ambers and whatever else was around. I'v been jigging alot of ambers in the past couple of months and over the past 3 years have definatly noticed a big increase in the size of the fish and how much the fishery is growing out there which is great to see. Arriving at my mark the bottom just completely lit up. We jigged the spot for about 4 hours and resulted in over 20 sambos boated and about 10 ambers of good size, we also got some great pinkies on the bait and a few on jigs. We noticed Plenty of whales out there travelling in numbers along with heaps of dolphins, Water temp is still up around the 21c, Anyway here's a few pics of the day out.
We also caught this funky little red fish which i dunno what it is, iv caught one once before but not sure?

Simply Untroutable..........
Submitted by TWITCHEMUP on Wed, 2011-07-06 16:43Hey crew here's a quick report on my last trip out Monday 4th July...
I had a couple of days of at the start of the week and was keen to get amongst it but the weather and conditions were not on my side...
My mate Mak (aka Fishncrazy) was with me for this trip we left the ramp at 10am a late start due to a screaming 15 - 20 knot cold South East wind, and as we thought at about 6 mile out the ocean turned into a giant washing machine with 2.5 - 3m swell meeting a roaring south east 1.5 - 2m chop making for a uncomfortable ride out.
I dedided not to head far with the conditions the way they were and headed to a few marks about 7 mile out which I hadn't fished for a while and were worth a look and would also mean a quick trip home if the conditions got any worse....
First mark my HDS was showing hard flat coral bottom in 20m with the odd rise/ledge holding bait with 1 or 2 decent fish holding close to the bait which is always a good sign....
So I set the drift and decided to use Butterfly Jigs while Mak stuck to plastics, the call was we would give it an hour or so and if no action we would and head home considering how bitterly cold the wind was and the battering we were getting home seemed a much better option at this stage.....
That was untill Mak's 2nd drop on plakkie resulted in his PB Coral Trout a 690mm 5.5kg model which are a rare catch from around Dongara unless you know where to look....
10 minutes later it was my turn to have my butterfly jig smashed mid water by this solid little 560mm Coral Trout - good fun on PE2.... So by now spirits were high and we decided to FISH ON!!!!
After the 2 Trout we found a school of Dhu fish in 17m and after catching and releasing a few pup Dhu's this 5kg Dhu nailed Mak's plakkie...
Things went quiet for a while after the last Dhu was caught so after a quick "sound for ground" I found a nice tight ball of fish sitting well off the bottom in 25m on the HDS, as soon as Mak dropped his plakkie 2 jigs up and he was on to this healthy little 4 kg Sambo...
Next drop Mak hooks up to this bigger 8kg model on plakkie while I persisted with jigs..
It's always awesome to watch a 15 kg Sambo chase and hit my jig only 2 m below the boat even if this one failed to hook up, we still had a ball catching and releasing 3 or 4 more rat Sambos on PE1...
What a way to finish the day with Mak nailing yet another Trout this one going 650mm on the last few drifts of the day talk about stoked 3 Trout off Dongara in 1 day is un heard of!!!
So yet another great day in the bag despite some trying conditions with 2 x Trout and a Dhu released into the esky and even better we didn't have to travel very far, and yes Mak definately had the touch this day...
I did lose a couple of big fish due to fish spitting the jig but it's always great putting mates onto fish especially a new Coral Trout PB (which Mak's been after for a while)..
Thanks for the read as always crew...

My first Pinkie on Artificial!
Submitted by beau on Wed, 2011-06-29 14:15My usual fishing buddy, FW member aka Goatlobster, and I had planned to head out this morning for our first Snapper bash this season as there have been whispers of good fish being caught in the sound and the break in the weather looked promising in the forecasts. Well he got sick a couple days ago and had to bail and i was iffing and ahhing about going so early in the morning as i didnt knock off work til 12.30am this morning. Woke up at 6am this morning and was pretty wet outside but decided to still head out, it absolutely pissed down on the way to the ramp and didnt let off til i actually reached the ramp carpark.
My aim for today was to try out the Gulp 7inch plastics for the 1st time and learn how to read my new Lowrance HDS5. I didnt venture out beyond 12m all day and found a couple of schools on the sounder but couldnt tell if it was bait or bigger fish as the reading was just solid masses in the middle water column. Couldnt get a strike at all so figured it was bait. By 8.30 I thought i had missed my chance as the sun was getting higher so gave up on the snapper and rigged up my trusty richter plug and started heading out for the islands for some Greenback action! Didnt even get a quater of the way out when I turned around as it was a bit too rough and didnt want to risk it with only me on the ski. I went back to the same area I was at earlier and re-rigged the Satay Chicken Gulp and as I was rigging i noticed the sounder light up like a christmas tree in 10m of water so out went the plastic 20m behind the ski. Sinking sinking sinking sinking then all of a sudden it was as if the plastic was alive and starting to swim away Swimming swimming swimming, the first thing that popped into my head was Dazsam's post and he mentioned the line "stripping" off the reel in free-spool. I cautiously flicked the bail-arm over and the rod loaded up and it seemed I was on?? Surely not that easy I thought, I only just got here?? I started to wind and then pumped the rod a couple times to set the hook and thats when all hell broke loose! Line started peeling off the reel, then slack! I started to retreive the plastic when it got whollopped again! Then slack again! Another couple twitches and i was on again! All this on my first drop! After a bit of a tussle for 2mins I was surprised to see a solid pinkie head-shaking a couple meters beneath the ski! Got him in the net and i couldnt stop yelling, i was stoked! I was dumbfounded by the size of him as i was actually thinking i had an undersize fish when i was playing him. Maybe i need to get some lighter gear but i thought 15lb was light enough!
Want to thank Albee Mangles for the hot tip and all the info and Grant for designing and fitting the transducer bracket
Cheers guys!

Butterfly Jig Session...
Submitted by TWITCHEMUP on Mon, 2011-06-27 20:13Hi crew quick report on yesterdays trip Sunday 26th with the swell dropping from 3.5 - 2.5m for the day I decided to head out and fish some spots in around 30m..
I headed out with Mrstwitch at around 11am and were meet with ordinary conditions so the decision was made to head to a spot 8km out and wait for conditions to improve then head out to a couple of other marks I have. This trip I decided to give the old faithful soft plastics a rest and try and master the Shimano Butterfly Jigs I was quiet confident that the fish would be happy to hit these jigs..
After pushing out through the big inshore swell we punched out through the channel and pulled up at the first spot 25mins later, I did the usual sound for ground and found some good looking structure on the HDS showing fish and scattered bait.
I then set up the first drift and tied on a jig and dropped my jig 22m below...
After a couple of drops to get the technique and action right I re dropped and started to work the jig back up when I had a good hit followed by a solid weight something decent had snavled the jig..
After a solid tussle on PE 1 I had this healthy 8 kg Dhu boat side, not bad first drift of the day and my first attempt at using the Butterfly jigs..
First Dhu on jig and first fish for the day..
After a couple more drifts and nothing really happening with the conditions getting better I decided to head out a further 10 - 12km and try another mark in 30m..
By the time we hit the next spot the ocean had almost turned to glass with a gentle 2.5m Swell rolling on through....
Arriving at the spot the HDS was showing a fair bit of bait and first up for me was this 500mm Coral Trout which came well off the bottom to eat the jig..
While I had been using butterfly jigs Mrstwitch had been using the old faithful plakkies and managed to nail this solid 6kg Dhu on a Squidgie 145mm Flickbait..
One of about 5 Pup Dhus on jig..
Over the next hour the 2 - 4kg Dhus smashed the butterfly jigs most were about this size which were brought up slow and all released fine..
Even this little 450mm Pinky had to have a crack at the slow worked jig..
By this stage the sounder was alive with fish from top to bottom and jigs were getting hit every drop mainly by these 1 - 2kg rat Sambos we must of caught around 20 all great fun on 10lb..
After having a ball on the mini Sambo's hitting the jig mid water my jig was crunched 3m off the bottom this time by a serious fish who wanted to go home..
After a good 3 - 4 minute battle of solid short power runs on lock drag I had the fish just within colour when it somehow spat the jig/hook!!!!!!!!!!!
I called it for a big daddy Dhu.... oh well I know where he is for next time...
Here I am trying to put the breaks on the lost big daddy Dhu with my PE1 jig stick.. (note - fish in background released it self from Mrstwitch's hook and released it self to the bottom fine lol)
After losing the suspected big daddy Dhu I just couldn't help myself and just had to drop a plakkie to the bottom to see if any of his mates were around...
After a couple more drifts on some more promising looking ground close by I had my flick bait slamed by this 7 - 8kg Dhu which put up a great fight on PE 2...
So by now its around 5pm and time for the "last drop of the day" and back to PE1 and jigs i went and in the perfect way to finish off the day this 11kg Sambo gave my arms one last stretching before the trip home...
What a day plenty of fish caught home by 6pm couldn't ask for a better day and I'm also stoked about catching a few fish on a new lure and technique so all in all another succesfull trip by the twitch team..
Total for the day was 12 Dhu's, 20 or so mainly Rat Sambo's, 1 Pink Snapper and a Coral Trout with only 2 Dhus kept for the day.
With just about all the fish caught on butterfly jigs I think I will using them a bit more from now on..
Hope you enjoyed the report I sure enjoyed making it....
Cheers Lloyd
