JM ocean god 280
Submitted by Jamos Damokos on Tue, 2011-09-27 12:05Has anyone used one of these? I just bought a sabre game and am really happy with it. I have a saltist40 that i plan on running 40/50lb on and was thinking this looks like a nice match for it. Any other rods in the $200/$300 price range that i should consider?

Is a 6ft jigging rod too long?
Submitted by symetre on Fri, 2011-09-23 16:29Today i looked at the Berkley Diablo 6ft jig / spin rod rated to 80lb. It balanced perfectly with my Saragosa 18,000.
I want this rod mainly for jigging sambos and kings, but also need it for heavy bottom bashing and a bit of livebaiting so im curious to hear a few opinions as to whether a 6ft rod is too long for jigging?
Im running 80lb on this combo.
I was originally looking at the Monster Mesh Max 5ft 3" but am thinking that the 6 footer might suit the bottom bashing / livebaiting application a little better.
So will i break my back jigging with a 6ft rod or will it be ok?
Cheers guys.

Never tried it....
Submitted by randall df223 on Fri, 2011-09-16 20:49Never tried jigging, and would like to give it a go without spending a truck load of money. I have got a 6' spinning rod that will have a abu garcier cardinal 44 reel (just a cheapie) with 7-8 kg braid... will that suffice if i get some jigs and if so what weight should I be getting? I also have a heavy duty boat rod with a shimano tld25 and 24kg braid if you think that might be better. and then what should I actually do to catch a fish???

Morning of Jigging 13/09/2011
Submitted by H.S. Chan on Thu, 2011-09-15 23:57
At 4:30am last Tuesday morning was picked up by Wade Stenhouse and headed north towards Moore River towing behind his tinny. I've been real keen to get out too as I've only been offshore 4 times ever (apart from last sunday) and been inshore 2 times and havent ever had much luck apart from Breaksea and 1 Harlequin.
Sun was up by the time we got there. We attempted a beach launch, wasn't that easy but after a short bog and a few tries we were all good and on our way. I figured when we got there maybe Wade COULDA let me know a while earlier that we were gonna get a bit wet, but smart me went in jeans and sneakers and got soaked, but Meh!, who cares, the water was nice as.
After setting the rods up we headed out towards one of his usual spot, the ride was a lil bumpy and the water had a bit of chop in it, but I've been on tinnys waaay more uncomfortable than Wade's. Can't say where we were so I won't get into too much detail on the scenery =P.
On the way out, there was alot of very promising whitewater breaking the reefs around us, though it was pretty temping, we just kept our eye on better prizes and kept going. When we got to the spot, depth was averaging 40m'ish. Wade showed me the sounder and the thing was lit up from top to bottom. We dumped in our light jigs and with very little work, we were on. We got nothing but Amberjacks and Sambos time and time again. They weren't huge, est 7-12kg, but was still fun as the action never stopped. Wade couldn't believe how many of these things we were pulling up, he says it isn't typical of this spot. Instead of moving, he insisted that there definately is better stuff at this spot. So we kept doubling back drift after drift and drop after drop, Sambos and Amberjacks non stop.
By around mid morning one of us, (memory a little fuzzed coz I was dead tired from not much sleep due to anxiety, so I can't remember who pulled first... but i think it was me =P) we jigged up our first Dhuie for the day, wasn't huge but a Dhu is a Dhu, I was so stoked as I've never seen or caught one before so then it went straight in the esky as our first keeper. Few more drops later between a few Sambos and Ambers, Wade brought up another Dhuie, average size and released. My turn came along where I pulled up a double header, an average size Dhuie and a Stonker Baldie, STRAIGHT in the esky for the Baldie and the Dhu was released safely, and that was my demersal bag done. Wade kept bringin us back over his drift and we kept on goin... after a few drops and releases of Sambos, Ambers and average Dhus, HE now got a double header, 2 Ambers! So we kept on goin and goin, lil while later, I pulled another Stonker of a baldie and I threw it over to Wade for the esky. Not long after, Wade got hooked up to something decent, it was really givin him some serious curry. After a really good hard battle, he really scored, a NICE big fatass Dhu weighing round 15kg mark. Man was he happy, PB's for both of us today, wasn't hard for me, but even wade got one and it was smiles all round.
We had our bag and we were just jiggin for playtime now. Wade thought we should video a jig, so he got out his cam and set it up and I started by goin for some big sambos. So now I started jiggin but wasn't that fast, my arms were like jello already and my outfit was really starting to weigh, I hooked up something serious and now I was tasting the curry. We both called it for Sambo Definately. After a decent fight... THARR SHE BLOWS, another fat and juicy Dhuie, little smaller than Wado's PB but not by much, est about 13kg. So yeah, another PB for me =).
We started playing with a few other spots with placcies while heading back but not much luck apart from wrasse and a decent cuttly that I esky'd. Went close to the reef and had a few casts with some plugs and nothing, then just before I had another cast, looked over Wade's shoulder and said "Oh Sh!t!" Wade turned around and followed suit with a "Oh Sh!t!" as well. There was a wave just about to break on us and we just gave it props real quick and got out. We headed back to shore happy, smiles all round and PB's under our belts.
Cheers for reading guys and props to Wade for getting us out there, I'd do this again any day of the week, so Wade, I'll say this is my official RSVP for anytime =D.
Some pics below, shoulda took more but busy fishin. Video is having some codec issues so will have to upload that later on. =))
Threw in 2 pictures of a day out behind Rotto with Jamos on 11/09/2011 at the very bottom as well saves me throwing up another thread.

Demersal/Light jigging for the 100th time.
Submitted by Jamos Damokos on Thu, 2011-09-08 11:47Assuming you guys have covered this a few times but posting it anyways, just got my light jigging outfit sorted and was wondering what jigs you guys use and the prices, what sort of ground do you look for, same as bottom bashing?? Baitfish hanging near or just off the bottom? I dont have to many spots as its been hard to get out as much as i would like so some prospecting will more than likely be in order. Will be fishing around rottnest most of the time. Am fishing with a 2500 reel and pe 1-3 rod most likely be loading 1.5 or 2 on the reel, not sure yet. Any info would be appreciated.
Cheers

Leader for Jigging
Submitted by battjn on Thu, 2011-09-08 09:26Reading as much as I can on jigging for Demersals before I get out there and give it a go for myself.
I'll be fishing 60 - 120g jigs in about 30 - 40m of water on 40lb braid.
Just wondering what would be a suitable leader to use. Mono or Flurocarbon? Brands? what weight rating and prefered knots ect to attach to my mainline. Any hints or tips that you think might be of use to me. This is one aspect of jigging I haven't found a lot of info on so I'm not really sure of how important it is.

Monster Mesh vs Fin Nor vs Deep Jig 400??
Submitted by symetre on Fri, 2011-09-02 07:02Gday all,
Im after an 80lb jigging rod to match to a Saragosa 18,000. Budget is approx $200 - $250.
Just after a few opinions on the following as to which would suit best:
- Daiwa Monster Mesh Max
- Fin Nor Offshore
- Shimano Deep Jig 400
The rod will be used for both jigging sambos and kings and also some deep water bottom bashing.
Must be able to handle 80lb as i already have 80 on my Gosa.
Cheers for any thoughts.

jig weight to water depth
Submitted by mitch on Tue, 2011-08-09 14:06just want some advice on jig weight for different water depth ,current etc .
whats your AVERAGE jig weight for say ,,
50m
70m
100m
200m
i know current and tide time might change this a bit along with line clas ect ..line class wouldnt be any less than pe 5 .average about pe 8
i havnt done any jigging at all and am keen to have a crack
the reason im asking is when in exxie trolling anywhere between 50 and 300 m i often spy some great looking jigging potential on the sounder.[yes its a very good sounder with a transducer that would burn a rubies eyes out] .....now convincing the skipper to stop and rig up a bait or 2 is out of the question ....but im sure i could twist his arm to stop and have a quick crack at steel
thanks in advance ..

NZ white island
Submitted by turts on Wed, 2011-07-27 13:09Hi guys received a phone call from a mate the other day he is keen on organizing a trip out to white island on board with a charter called Pursuit I believe for some kingfish action.
Have seen recent trips related to three kings but was wondering if anyone has fished white island in the past and especially on bored Pursuit?
From what I hear and read on the net so far it is kingfish heaven out there. He wants to do a live aboard three dayer. I asked him about three kings but recons you need five days due to the distance and traveling involved.
If this mob has a good reputation and white island is a superb fishery I'm more than happy to go but want to make sure especially when you think about the dollars involved.
Anyone know how deep it gets out there. Most of my gear is spin up to 80lb 300m spool and mainly 300-400g jigs. Would I need 500gms?
Is there any other species you can encounter out there. I have see the bass and harpuka from three kings but is it similar here too? And also marlin at the right time of year? Would love to be able to get onto a few different species as I can see jigging king for three days straight as being a bit monotonous by the third day, don't get me wrong it would still be awesome fun!
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Jigging The Three Kings Enchanter Style
Submitted by Coxy on Wed, 2011-07-06 16:19Back in May I was lucky enough to head back to the Three Kings for my second jigging trip there for the year, like the last trip we also got some massive Bass, good kings and even Enchanter's first marlin caught on a jigging combo !
Apart from myself everyone was on there first trip to the Three Kings with me this year.
With the weather report not so flash, 4-6m swells and around 20-30 knots of wind for the first 4 days out of 7 we were lucky to be fishing on Enchanter.
Boat loaded and ready to go.
On the way out we were lucky to come across a school of kings which we managed to pick up a few on the troll in rough conditions.
Marco with a nice king on the troll.
After arriving at the Three Kings after dark the plan was made to collect some live bait the next morning and head out to the King Bank to jig up a few kings then have a crack with some livies for some stick face. Lance put us on the spot with 40 livies in the tank in no time and out to the king bank for a quick jig before we had a crack for some stick face.

Nigel with a nice king to start the trip off on the Jigging Master Power Spell 450.

Richo with one of his first for the trip.
Myself with a nice wee puka for the table.

Marco with one of his first from the King Bank, note the nice seas in the background.
Late on Day 2 while live baiting for kings Troy with his Jigging Master PE7 and Jigstar 350 which he was instructed would not be able to land a stick face soon found himself hooked to one, after a very short under 10min battle the striped stick face at around 100kg was soon tagged to fight another day, also there was another two hooked at the same time as Troys but they didn't stick, well done Lance and Steve you legends !
Here is the link to Troys marlin on the jigging combo, please excuse the language you could imaging how pumped we were considering the weather out there.
Striped Marlin on a Jigging rod
Day 3 seen us out on the Middlesex Bank in some very tough conditions, the full moon and big currents made it very tough today and every king was fighting well over its weight.
Day 4 seen us back out to the Middlesex Bank in search of some more kings, fishing was tough again when searching for kings Lance come across a heap of bass so we thought we better cash in in case we had problems tracking them down later in the trip.
Richo with a nice puka and bass.

Myself with a nice 40kg bass.

Marco managed to hook onto a solid fish which was giving him a hard time on the spin outfit, the stella was screaming and Jigstar 350 doing its job nicely.
Marco with his new PB king over the magic 30kg mark !
Nigel soon found himself hooked to a solid bass, after a epic battle he was soon rewarded with his PB bass and heaviest fish on a jig, the magic 50kg mark !

Second skipper Steve got in on the action showing the boys how its done.
Charlie found himself hooked to a freight train from the deep, after a huge battle he to was soon holding his PB with a solid king over the magic 30kg mark.

Troy with a solid king.
Day 5 after a rough night spent out soaking some baits for the illusive sword fish was also spent on the Middlesex Bank, the conditions were improving and looking amazing for the last couple of days, Lance soon put us on the spot and had those rods bent over the rail !

Macro with another solid king.
Myself with a king.
Stefan had a hard few days at the start and started to get a few nice fish on board.

Richo with a solid king.
Lance teaching Troy how its done.
The end result a 34kg king !
Nigel and Troy with a double.
Another solid fish for Troy.
Steve taking the boys to his hot spot and what a spot it was we were all soon to be in a lot of pain.
We spent another night out chasing the illusive sword but with no luck again.
Day 6 the last of our trip was spent on the king bank in search of Lances word " some big bass " on the past two trips he has never let us down.
The boys telling us how Enchanter was the number 1 charter boat.
After landing a few solid kings and a huge bass Nigel thought it was time to get the noodle stick out, a solid king on PE4.
After a couple of drifts for bass with not much luck I soon found myself hooked to a solid bass, a few minutes of locked drag and a tug of war dodging the anchor on the bow I soon had the fish clear of the bottom, after 20mins or so pretty sure the bass had to be over the magic 50kg mark after the tug of war I was soon rewarded with my biggest ever bass at 65kg on the scales, the Jigging Master PE7 and Jigging Master Amberjack Sniper Hyper made this task very easy, Lance you are the man !

Next drop Marco found himself his biggest bass for the trip as well.

Time for the light tackle so out come the Jigging Master PE3 and Ocean God 180, my biggest king to date on the light gear.
Troy soon found himself in a world of trouble hooking a solid bass right on the bottom, after using the new spew over the rail style his PB bass at 40kg was soon on board.

On the last drop for the trip Nigel was hooked to a donkey on the light gear, after a huge battle he soon had a solid 28kg king his largest on the light gear on board.
Below is a wee video clip we put together of the trip.
JigTalk International Jigging Forum Presents Jigging The Three Kings Islands, New Zealand, May 2011
Most gear used on our trip was either Jigging Master or Jigstar which can be purchased or ordered via site sponsor Oceanside Tackle and Marine.

RFI Jigging in Kimberley
Submitted by fishnut on Sun, 2011-07-03 13:46Just wanting some advice from experienced Kimberley-based jiggers. What do you recommend? I've only used the knife jigs in the SW and a search on here found only a few comments about knife jigs up there. Anyone use them with success? tips? what species?
Is it worth the effort, or are the octo-type jigs better up there. (I have more knife jigs than octos so was hoping to avoid having to spend more cash...)

Saragosa 18000??
Submitted by symetre on Thu, 2011-06-30 19:33Just a few questions on the Saragosa 18000:
What are peoples views on these as a sambo jigging reel?
How much 80lb am i likely to fit on the 18000, ie at least 300m?
Would the 18000 be better suited to the Shimano Deep Jig 200 or 400 rod if im running 80lb?
Cheers guys, looking to put a cheaper jigging combo together and the Saragosa seems to be the best option.

Three Kings Video Intro May 2011 Aboard Enchanter
Submitted by Coxy on Wed, 2011-06-22 17:06I have been very lucky this year going to the Three Kings in New Zealand aboard Enchanter in March and again in May, my March trip was posted here as a photo report this trip is slightly different as we have just put together the first of our HD video clips from our trip last month, we had bad weather with 4-6m swells most of the trip, 30 knots winds you name it we had it, we managed to land the first ever marlin aboard Enchanter on a jigging combo, a Jigging Master PE7 and Jigstar 350, I managed my PB Bass at 65kg and every one else on board managed PBs with bass and king fish, I will post some photos at a later date but sit back and enjoy our first HD video intro, if you have time load it in HD and crank up the sound !

Try this for an idea.
Submitted by iana on Thu, 2011-06-09 16:30That another "Forum Topic (Topics) be created. Different categories where you guys can put up a picture of an item of fishing gear (your favourite), and all can write comments good or bad about it. For instance squid jigs - make-colour size etc does this one work, when where etc. Lures good bad what fish how used etc. And so on. It would help to be able to read up on gear before going to buy. A bit like the "Fish Id Guide" but about gear.

Drag help for daiwa saltist ld40 2spd
Submitted by spanishmackeral on Wed, 2011-06-08 23:00Hi guys,
While having a play around with my daiwa saltist ld40 2spds' drag this arvo somethings gone wrong. The drag curve is now very heavy on the end, it doesn't show any drag until it goes into strike, where it has double what it had before, and I didnt even bother putting it in full lock as I didn't wanna crush the washers.
My stupidity (how it happened): my reel didnt get as much drag as it says on the daiwa website, so I twisted the strike adjustment cap off and had a look if there was anyway of gaining a bit more drag. It all looked very complicated so I put the cap back on (thinking I didn't change anything) and started tightening with the reel in freespool, with the intention to stop when the drag started to affect the freespool (as I normally do), which never happened. And now I have tones more drag which is nice, but the way the drag comes on is all wrong and I don't think there's meant to be as much drag pressure as there is.
Does anyone know how to get it back to normal?? Or should I just take it into Oceanside and see what honsu can do?
I hope this all makes sence, cheers rob

Ryobi Metaroyal 80lb?
Submitted by symetre on Mon, 2011-05-23 19:34Howdy,
Im from SA and am heading over to WA in December for a few jigging trips. Im looking to set up a combo to use.
Im interested in the Ryobi Metaroyal 5000 but was wondering the following:
Does anyone run 80lb braid on their Ryobi and if so what kind of capacity are you fitting on the spool?
Im looking to match the Ryobi to a Monster Mesh Max PE6-8 or a Shimano Deep Jig 400.
Any thoughts on the Ryobi running 80lb would be great, thanks.

Overhead rod for jigging and bottom bouncing for demersals.
Submitted by Watto75 on Thu, 2011-05-12 22:15Hey guys,
I recently picked up an Avet 6/4 2speed spooled with Diawa PE3 from one of the guys on here, Im looking for a rod to put it on. I would like to try jigging plastics, I will also use it for bottom bouncing with a little bit of lure chucking as well.
I have a number of options but I'm pretty keen on a G Loomis Pro-Blue 6'6" 20-40lb also going on here. I've also considered a Lemax 5'6" 20-50lb and a mate is pretty keen on me trying the Fin-nor 50lb 6'.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

I have been looking at 3 rods, Monster Mesh max 300 spin, T-Curve Revolution PE6 Jig and FWA PE6 Jig. It would be great to hear opinions on these rods or any others that are similar and come in around the $200 mark.
