Blue-Eye Trevalla " Firsts on jigs" !!!!
Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 2013-02-04 13:39With Saturdays conditions looking sweet it was a choice of trolling out wide or Super Deep. Scott/Soupy (FW- Soupster) has finally come back to Perth after 3 years in Ponepei living the dream and was keen to get Super Deep species on jigs and likewise Shaun (FW- Shabba) as both have caught fish out there ........ just not on jigs!
Arm twisted we headed off in search of Super Deep species and only jigs........no bait!
I'm gonna shorten up the story as I'm about to head off down South but the boys both got their " First " Super Deep fish on jig and both ended up with their bag limit using Super deep 1kg jigs!
The Pink silver and the Blue Pilchard 1kg Super Deep jigs got the target species and the Esca Blue flashing & slow fade lights were attached to the jigs to entice more interest/fish!
Shabba's First on jig
Soupy First on jig
Shabba's Second on jig
Soupy Second on jig
I got my two fish with the last one being the biggest for the day!
The Esca and Super deep 1kg jigs being the weapon of choice!
Was a great day on the water and seeing the boys get their first on jig a real buzz.....congrats fella's
Gear used;
* Daiwa Megatwin electric reel (With JM drag upgrade)
* Jigging Master Evolution Titanium 400 overhead rod
* Berkley whiplash Braid 80lb
* Super Deep 1kg Japanese Jig
* Esca water activated flashing light

Cape Nat- pretty quiet
Submitted by Brad Y on Mon, 2013-02-04 11:51Spent the day cruising the briny off Cape Naturaliste. Even though there were turtles, dolphins and flyingfish about everywhere it was still pretty quiet on the fish front. Managed one small legal dhu and another undersize. Both werent looking great when they came up and we brought them up real slow. The undersize was sent back on the release weight and didnt see him float back up so hopefully it came good. Got one nice breaksea as well, an undersize pinky a couple of small swallowtail that went back (not worth keeping at just legal size) and a few sambos around the 70cm mark. Absolute cracker day though stayed offshore for most of the day and even the southerly when it came in was very well behaved. Not often you get a full day out this time of year!
Anyone else have any success?

New ground
Submitted by r.gates on Sun, 2013-02-03 21:15Hi all
Headed out to a likely looking spot that I found during a search of my charts. Set off early and as I approached the marked area, the sounder was showing me some nice underwater formations. Sounded around for a while and managed to take these few pics before a bout of suspected food poisoning started kicking in which flattened me and forced me to abandon this spot and head for home.
Will be out there again real soon, hopefully next weekend.
All I'll say is that I headed out from the Cut

Mako caught off Mindarie
Submitted by rex73 on Sun, 2013-02-03 20:30Hi Guys,
Well it's turning out to be a great summer of fishing for us this year. Today I was able to mark off another fish from my fishing wish list. We put the boat in at Mindarie early this morning and headed north to around the Two Rocks area I think, it's a little hard to tell where you are when you are out deep. First I caught a nice little bronzie about a metre long. Nice way to start the day and wake you up. Then after about our 5th spot we noticed a big bait school near the bottom and there were bigger fish under the school. My line was first in the water and as soon as it hit the bottom I felt something strange, I thought it was a snag at first but then I felt the weight of a big fish kicking and my first thought was here we go it’s going to be a big dhufish, but as I set the hook my reel lit up and the fish was heading for the surface, the three of us on the boat couldn’t believe our eyes as a massive mako shark launched itself into the air about 6 times. We managed to get it up to the side of the boat after chasing it around for a while. Not a bad effort for 30lb gear. It was my first mako and I will never forget seeing it fly out of the water. I have attached a you tube video, unfortunately we didn’t get any of the jumps but still some ok footage. After we let the mako go we did another drift at a different spot and my wife got a double header, 65cm dhu and 50cm baldie. Great day and we were home for lunch.

White Hills/Preston beach report
Submitted by Wes F on Sun, 2013-02-03 14:52Got down early in the arvo to claim a likely looking spot before the crowds arrived.
Setup camp got rigged up and kicked back for awhile and knocked back a few beers.
Conditions were very pleasant, light seabreeze and no swell.
Went for a quick dip and relaxed a bit more and enjoyed the sunshine
Started burlying up and was looking a catching a few hezzas for bait. While standing a the waters edge I noticed some half descent size whiting feed in water between the reef and shoreline.
So I change tactics and sighted cast at them for a couple of hours and landed a few for bait and a few larger ones for a feed. (largest went about 34 cm) Me young fella got a descent hezza for the table aswell.
Kept on fishing for herring and watched another day finish with the sun setting.
Can't beat it an ice cold beer, fishing and family. Gotta love this life and our country.
Fished on till early morning only one tailor about 37 cm. One run but no hookup.
Beach is easy to drive on no weed at all and the water is crystal clear.
Not to worry me son and I always a night down at the beach.
Till next time good luck Fisho's and Fishet's.
P.S. The rangers are targeting people camping and driving in the dunes, have started to block off more access points into the dunes. (Preston beach end)
If you go down please keep out of the dunes, the rangers are getting very strict on offenders.

Night assault
Submitted by Justin M on Sun, 2013-02-03 01:49Don't normally fish past sunset but for a change of scenery I decided to spend a few hours down at Burns Beach after sundown. There was a fair few fellow fishers down as well, mostly crowding around near the groyne...I decided to head further up away from the tangle. Played around with a Rooster popper for a bit before the sun vanished but to no avail, so it was onto the trusty old mulie on my other rod. It was damn quiet without a nibble before I gave up and rerigged my new combo with a running star sinker and a set of 4/0 gangs. Twenty odd minutes would have passed before the line went taught and the rod buckled over. My first ever hookup on my new combo...wooooo! Turns out to be a tailor and for its size gave a good account for itself. I suppose it was a little flighty as it nearly iki jime'd itself with the gang hooks!
Stoked, I kept at it firing more mulies, rearming here and there due to the enevitable disintegration of the bait from the elements and pickers before I got another solid hit and line peeled off and I chased it up the beach (ok so i exaggerate...I moved over a few feet)After a good tussle, another, bigger model tailor is hoisted off the rocks. Looks like brekky has been sorted and its just gone 9.00 pm. Then, the best bit...though I regret I have no photgraphic evidence, I get another solid hit and after a short battle, a bees dick away from been legal mulla is attached at the other end. I am sure those further down the beach could have heard my exclamation of joy. He gets to live another day and grow bigger (we shall meet again!) and understandably am buzzing over the capture and do not care if the rest of the night goes pear shaped. Anywhoo after a quiet period of about an hour I get some tentative hits so i pull back only for something to get very angry and take off on the Ocean Express. This thing would not stop and the Abu Garcia Omega 4000 i have screamed in protest and the 8ft Eupro bends at a horrible angle...no amount of coaxing could get it to turn, whether gentle or brutal...easing off it would stop and sit there....more pressure only resulted in it getting fired up and taking off....one final attempt sees a few violent head shakes and it lets go...after having stripped nearly half the line from the reel. Could it have been a beastly mulla? I can only hope so... At least the new combo can handle a bit of punishment which was good to see. Big thanks to the young fella at the Fishing Shop for putting me onto it.

Morning of 2/2/13 catch
Submitted by Michael Yoni on Sat, 2013-02-02 08:53Went out for a quick flick this morning. The usual spot South Beach, land based, over a bit of a weedy patch. After about two hours, saw a couple of dolphins about 50m offshore froliking which then affected the biting, so packed up and came home for brekkie. Had a bit of a slick going.
A bit of a mixed bag. All on bait (combination/selection of blue sardines, squid, blood worms).
Not sure what the 3 dark fish were but kept them anyway .

Was out fishing on the hillarys rock wall around 7 pm on thursday night hoping to catch a tailor. Was using mullies with a triple ganged wire trace pulley set up size 4/0 hooks. Ended up catching a 7 kg ray just as the sun was coming down. Put up a great fight , hopefully catch a tailor next time but cant complain. Does anyone else fish that area with any luck? Cheers

Summer fishing so far..
Submitted by rex73 on Fri, 2013-02-01 12:39Hi Guys,
Thought I would put up some pics from the summer so far. All of our fishing has been done out from Mindarie. We seem to be getting a lot of bald chin so far this year, we have had a couple of snapper and lots of sambos but mostly just little guys. We did get out to direction bank once over our break and we managed a boat record with a sambo that I guessed the weight in the high 30’s or maybe even 40kgs.(the photo doesn’t do it justice, I need a gopro camera) I did try and lift it but there was no way that fish was coming out of the water without putting a gaff in it and I didn’t want to hurt the fish, it took us about 25mins to land and we had it follow it around in the boat, great fun. We have been catching a few small dhu fish but have only had two size ones so far. we have done a little trolling because the water has been pretty warm but no luck with the macks yet.

Bit of an old report but got these little kingys and Bluefin tuna in about 10-25m of water straight out from the cut around the start of January. They were loving the soft plastics and hardbodies, good fun on the light stuff ey. As you can see conditions were pretty atrocious haha

Kalbarri Aussy Day Weekend
Submitted by DavidBaricevic on Thu, 2013-01-31 08:46Well I just got back from Kalbarri for australia day weekend and what a weekend it was, firstly I have to thank Tangles for taking us out to one of his spots and showing us some good ground, also thanks to Tapout who came along aswell.... I have never seen such colour on my sounder!! We drove up Friday and went out 3.30am Saturday, a little windy in the morning but absolutley Killer after that....Less than 1-1.5mtr Sat,Sun,Mon,Tue and on Sunday less than 5Knot wind!!! Glass Off!! Saturday Morning we stopped along the coast and the boys checked their pots before we went onto our fishing spot. We got onto some snapper early with some excellent fights, me and my mate blair managed 2 over 50cm and one under who released well... I could see the other boys were having some good fights as well. We then moved to another spot where we anchored & burlyed up.... several more fish...heaps of Weiro? Cod (Never seen one before) A couple of wobby gong Sharks and a couple of nice baldies. Sharks and Cod all released. I left my rod briefly in the rod holder while I was cutting some mulies and It slapped the side of the hull bent over..tried to get it out but busted off...Should have set my drag better made this mistake twice during the trip! My mate blair then a 5-6kg Mulloway from the boat. At this stage we had plenty on board so we decided to head home and fillet up for lunch. Sunday we weren't going to go out but when I woke up at 7am I couldnt belive my eyes no wind or swell... Quick chat with the Mrs and we were on the water by 8am.. Some good fish again, 67cm Pinky 58cm Pinky and a fat 53cm Baldie..The wind swung around early so we decided to call It a day.... Next time I'll spend more than 5 days and If I get weather like that again I will be truly blessed!!! Sorry Pics are with Iphone left my camera at home...

Dunsborough Fishing
Submitted by elliotbirch on Tue, 2013-01-29 15:13Hey guys,
Been down at Dunsborough on a family holiday for the past two weeks and tried to get out fishing as much as I could with a few limiting factors of the wind, not having a fishing orientated boat and family committments! Still managed to get out a few times though and had better fishing than i've enjoyed over the last couple of years.
The first interesting catch of the holiday was when I was just throwing a standard paternoster rig with prawns around the moorings near Toby's inlet and after catching a few sand whiting something took my bait with quite a flurry and I new straight away that I wasnt onto a whiting, then it started peeling my 4lb braid off at quite a pace and then it jumped and I thought that it was small Salmon which was lost. But when I got it close to shore and standard walking backwards on the beach to land it I realised that it was a Giant Herring, but i thought that this was as close as i was going to get to it because it spat the hook when it was right on the shoreline in about 2cm of water, but my Dad who was fishing about 15m down the beach sprinted over and grabbed it out of the white wash and we measured it in at a healthy 59cm. Was quite a surprise to catch one because I had never seen one before let alone caught one, but i was stoked!
A few days later we decided to head out on the boat, which again is more a day/ski boat so we are restricted to flat days with small swell etc (however we are selling ASAP and getting a fishing boat). We headed to about the 18-25m depth off Meelup, Eagle Bay and Bunkers and trolled 3m divers and the water looked very fishy, and this feeling was right, we regularly caught Bonito which put up a very good fight on 15lb braid in about the 40-55cm range. The most intriguing catch whilst trolling these areas was a Sambo when we were in ab out 25m of water, it is quite odd to catch Sambo's whilst trolling? However on the lighter gear this 10kg-ish Sambo put up an excellent fight.
Mixed in with this was a variety of all your bread and butter species! But the fishing was almost over shadowed by the amazing numbers of baitfish that we could not only see on the sounder, but we could actually see from the boat, there were hundreds of thousands of baitfish off Rocky Point and I was annoyed when i didnt have my bottom bouncing gear when we drove over schools of big fish on the bottom according to the sounder!!
Hope this helps some people going down south soon....

Icefishing for Lake Trout
Submitted by KenTse on Tue, 2013-01-29 13:05Here's a little something different again.
Michael, Evan and I met up yesterday to fish Simcoe. Previous day's report suggested 4-5 inches of ice. That was what we found yesterday as well. All of us had survival suits and Evan and I had lots of experience icefishing and fishing on Simcoe. We were spudding as we walk out and test drilling a hole every so often. The ice is still borderline safe...so I WILL NOT advise anyone going out on that ice at the moment, especially with the warm weather in the next few days!
We started our day early and started fishing at 6:30am. I always like to get there early to explore the area, find the right depth...and sometimes the fish turns on with a day break bite. According to previous day's report, the bite was supposed to start at 9am, but didn't come until 12pm.
If I remember correctly, Michael went 2/4, catching his first ever lake trout and then topping it with a PB laker. Evan went 2/4 landing 2 lake trout. I went 1/4 landing 1 lake trout, losing 2 and I'm pretty sure a whitefish came unbottoned as well. I also missed another whitefish hit (so light that it came and went before I can even set the hook).
We fished until 4pm and tried to find a late afternoon bite...but a shift in the wind and a dip in the temperature probably shut down the bite.
Instead of my usual long written report, here is a video. I'll try to position the camera better next time. I should have pointed it further downward. (There is a bit of swearing in the video...viewer discretion advised)

Here are a few pictures.

There's this much ice...

Finally a Phucking Fish!
Submitted by Swompa on Tue, 2013-01-29 12:46Well after almost 12 months of catching stuff all after many attempts and many $$$'s, (one Taylor in Cervantes, three sharks in Broome on a charter, nothing on another charter in Darwin and one herring at Garden Island) I have finally caught something interesting!!!
Wifey and I took a trip to Rotto on Monday for a dive, but 10 minutes she saw a shadow and gave me the sign that we were heading back to the boat now. So instead of wasting the whole day, we trawled in 20m of water from Parker Point to Stragglers.
Just as we were bomby dodging and i was about to pull in my line on the inshore side of Stragglers, i managed to pick up this beauty.
The rod i got as a prezzie 6 years ago and have NEVER had a hook up on it, so i was rather pleased.
Hopefully the cursed rod is no more.

Surface Bream
Submitted by ca11um on Mon, 2013-01-28 20:09Hey guys, currently sitting at home fighting off a nasty case of chicken pox which is tearing me to shreds.... So while i am in "quarantine" i thought i would try and read up on surface techniques for bream in the metro area.
What lures do you find are the best? what tides, water temperatures, techniques and tackle are work best for you?? I have caught Yellowfin Brumz on surface but no Blacks, something i really want to tick off this year!! (once the pox is gone of course)
So if you have a photo, have a story, some insight on the subject, whatever you have, can you please post it so i can imagine myself back in the game instead of itchy hell....
Thanks guys :)
Have a good one!!

Monday in the Swan
Submitted by Tomrob1 on Mon, 2013-01-28 18:12Headed out today with a mate to test out his new honda 50hp & wet a line.
Launched from the Walter Point Boat ramp at around 11, as deepwater point looked a bit too hectic.
Headed towards the city, stopping along at a few spots on the northern banks that looked fishy. Mostly shallow water near the drop offs, so fishing between 5-10 feet. We were right that they looked fishy, if the blowies count as fish. Every spot we tried was flooded with them!
Anyway we gave the outboard a good run - it purred along quite nicely, and has plenty of grunt for his 14ft punt. Didn't seem to use much fuel either, so we were both definitely impressed. We had a little bit more luck at our last spot - about 100m from the boatramp in about 20feet of water. 1 nice flathead at 36cm, another good fish lost about 5 minutes later (presuming another flatty), and a little 25cm flounder. All released to fight another day.
Hope other people had more success than us!
Cheers

Lancelin Report
Submitted by Codhead on Sun, 2013-01-27 13:17Myself and a mate spent a couple of hours in the tinny out from Lancelin to avoid the chaos at Two Rocks. We braved fairly average conditions early on and got out to some intersting ground in around 30 meters close to some cray pots. Plenty of bites including our bag limit of baldies and dhufish and a sambo and few black bottomed cod which were released. We saw a couple of schools of small yellowfin tuna hitting the surface but didnt hook up trolling skirts on the way in.

Canning River, Canning Bridge to Kent St Weir
Submitted by the_dude84 on Fri, 2013-01-25 22:44I've been spending a lot of time near and on the Canning river lately and wanted to write a report on it's health and the bream that I've caught. Some pics too!
Also I went to PT Walter with a mate on the 11th and had an absolute blast catching and releasing about a 20 chopper tailor smallest being about 20cm largest being 35cm. Good fun on light gear!
Back to the canning...
Saturday 5th- had a delightful little session near Shelley Sailing Club. Went down mainly to let my son and dog run around! Caught and released several bream All 20-22cm though! Schools of Bony Herring were everywhere!
Saturday 12th- Headed off to Canning Bridge in the tinny with the intention of burning the fuel I had mixed that was laying around going stale. Pulled up next to canning bridge and caught about half a dozen smaller bream(about 20-22cm) on mainly baits did hook one on a blade off the bridge! Good fun they go hard there and use the current to their advantage. I also got 'pyloned' by something alot bigger! 5lb braid wasn't enough! Saw some crab drop net rage also!
Saturday 19th- Went kayaking with my son on the front and noticed lots of Algae hanging around near the Riverton Bridge. A bit further upsteam I stopped and had a walk around at a spot where the river is quite shallow and has a sandy bottom, massive fish activity here Schools of bony herring and Mullet everywhere. Decent size mullet too some up to 40cm I thing. Caught a few small bream on an ecogear sx40. I'm sure bigger fish were around. Was awesome though seeing all the fish activity in the Area
Sunday 20th- Went down near Shelley Sailing club again to let the Dog and my Son run around again(and get him hooked!!), Caught and released several very fat bream all around the 25cm-30cm Range on baits. Even my Mum came down and got into it! Saw some young fellas catch a massive Flatty in the channel also. The River was looking very healthy indeed. Even saw a few large crabs!
Thursday 24th- Didn't fish but on a bike ride in the morning before work I happened to notice massive schools of big mullet (40cm models) hanging just over the the salt water side of the kent St Weir. What a spectacle, they were breaking the surface feeding on what got washed over the weir. Literraly hundreds of them. I wish i had my rod!
Thanks for Reading.

Marron snaring, first try.
Submitted by choc on Fri, 2013-01-25 05:40Hi Guys.
After years of marroning the easy way(drop nets)I thought I would go to Harvey and try snaring.
Got there with the family, set the baits and waited till dark.
First check of the baits and we spooked a big one.Second run spooked two more.
In the end we saw several but as soon as the light got close enough to see them they were off.
There were a fair few footprints on the bank so maybe they are a bit flighty,or maybe my skills just need fine tuning.
Anyway it was a nice night by the dam with the missus and kids.
