Fishing Denham
Submitted by Troyboy on Mon, 2016-05-09 02:25Hi guys,
I'm heading up North in a few days with the family and just trying to make a bit of a game plan for fishing out of Denham.
We're towing a 4.3 meter tinny up with a 40 on the back, weather permitting I was going to troll north along the coast and see what I can find, flick some squid jigs around etc. I have had a read of a few posts and taken some notes but just a few questions for people who have fished it before so I don't waste to much time on things that are unlikely to work...
Do many macks get caught around Denham or is it mainly over near the channel?
Can you beach launch a boat anywhere near cape Peron? The google photos look good....
Is there much good country around Denham itself or does everyone travel across to Places like "6 pins" and "the bent peg"? If it's flat I'll shoot over but if not probably stick a little closer to town!
Thanks in advance for any info or tips, hopefully i'll post a little something about the progress in a week or so!

shelter bay
Submitted by Oldbull on Sat, 2016-05-07 09:30Has anyone been in to shelter bay or steep in the last month or so. Wife and I are towing an off road camper trailer in to shelter bay behind a 100TD cruiser in 2 weeks time. Ranger said they had only had 8ml rain in the year so I expect track to be soft?. We haven't been beyond Tamala previously and that was smooth as.
Expect to be down to 12psi on all 6 tyres. Trailer will be under about 900-1000kgs so not a massive weight. Have spare spring set and U bolts but don't fancy changing them on the side of the track.
Are there little passing run offs on the track similar to Peron Peninsula as I expect to be going in around 11am just as others are coming out.
Thanks
Dave

Exmouth Crays after June 30th
Submitted by Rowanhill on Fri, 2016-05-06 08:42HI All
Heading to Exy in July now after June was cancelled due to medical reasons., my crew intend on doing some diving for Tropical Crays....My understanding in Sth of NW Cape the season closes June 30th. But Nth of Nth West Cape the season is all year. if you launch from Bundegi/Marina, but dive around the Murions say....can you bring that catch back on shore at the boat ramp? A grey area for me im hoping some one can clarify. My understanding is we won't be able to take any during July anywhere from Exy. Any help on this matter would be great. Going to fisheries will be my next port of call, Cheers

Shore Catch Post 1 - Bait & Burley
Submitted by Shore Catch on Thu, 2016-05-05 22:57After being a “story writer” for a couple of years on FW, setting up a new business (fishing and scientific consulting) and sponsoring this excellent site, it was probably time that I used our business identity to post relevant commercial things. Adam allowed me to set up the Shore Catch profile and this is Post 1. I will still post my fishing stories, and make non-commercial comments, as Mick C however.
After a couple of months at the shop, it has been awesome to meet and talk to a lot of FW Members – we really appreciate the effort of those that have come in. We are still working hard to finish our showroom display and finalise our range and really want that all to be done before actively promoting our brand and products through the numerous mediums available. We certainly plan to have a FW Members opening with a BBQ and beers when it is all done. The input from FW Members, pretty much on a daily basis, has been much appreciated.
A general theme that comes through time and time again is bait quality. It has always been an issue for me and is one of the reasons we invested in WA Fisheries and town planning approvals to allow fish processing at our premises. After a lot of consideration and feedback we have finally settled on our retail bait range, and this can be viewed at http://www.shorecatch.com.au/shore-catch-bait.html. We are stocked up and most things we package ourselves, unless stated, so that we can try and guarantee quality. Please have a look and we would welcome any feedback on what has been selected, bearing in mind that some things are seasonal or subject to fishing closures (i.e. Californian squid).
A number of Members have requested bulk baits for trips away. It has been good dealing with people and working with them to ensure the bait packages suit their needs. We have the permits and equipment to allow us to process fish products to produce the bait packages that people want. I particularly liked Lamby’s request for squid and mullet that could be taken out to catch the fresh bait, one packet per day for 2 boats over 5 days, on the annual trip North. In the end we settled on 10 x 2kg mixed bags with 1kg squid and 1kg mullet fillets per bag which I could vacuum pack flat to minimise transport space (see image). I believe this is a valuable service that we should continue to provide?

The development of our fish based burley products is continuing. The “shred-a-thon” is tomorrow (as per the post - http://fishwrecked.com/forum/fw-members-free-fish-frame-shredding-day-10am-630pm-friday-6-may-wangara). There has been a good response and I’m sure Members will be happy with the shred that is “retrieved” from their fish waste. The fish shred is the essential ingredient in burley (or just used raw) and you are more than welcome to come along, even if it is to just have a look at the “beast” in action. I have plenty of frames to process so will be happy to show you how it works. This use is so much better than putting the fish waste in landfill.
The feedback on the burley we make has been very encouraging. There is no doubt that the product attracts fish, and I particularly like the shore based stories from repeat customers about how the bait fish have been attracted and the predators have been caught. I have tested the burley products a lot over the last couple of months, from a few boats, and am very happy with performance. We will look to distribute our fish based burley products to a geographic spread of limited Perth tackle shops over the next few months, particularly the FW Sponsors.
The ”FW Journey” so far has been a good one, and Shore Catch hopes to provide selected products and services that Members want in the future. Thanks for your feedback and support. Mick

Submitted by Karak on Tue, 2016-05-03 22:42Hi all,
I am looking into purchasing a tuna stickbait rod.
was looking into the carpenter, ripplefisher, temple reef and even FCL Labo.
Is the Temple reef" Reefer" 7'11 quite flexible in the tip?
Open to suggestions though.
I will be primarily be using stickbaits or might change to poppers given the situation.
Thank you.

First NZ Trout
Submitted by The Saint on Tue, 2016-05-03 21:23Managed to nail my first NZ trout whilst touring the south island during the past 3 weeks.
Caught at Lake Moeraki on dusk and went around 53cm, not huge by NZ standards but I was stoked none the less. Cooked up a treat in the barby. Followed it up with a slightly smaller model the following morning, this one released. Both caught on soft plastic, Berkey Gulp 3 inch minnow in Watermelon Pearl on a Nitro 1/8 jig head. If you haven't done NZ yet, get it on your bucket list, an amazing place and the scenery will blow your mind.

Prawn scooping in the Cut Mandurah
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2016-05-03 09:42Anyone able to assist
Since returning from Kcity and living within a spit of Bouvard ramp and the Cut always thought I would try this.
Have the boat well and truly lit up with LED decklights, and built an underwater flood light last year to try this, but never got around to it.
Now a few basic I know, Outgoing tide and as dark a night as possible, ie not full moon.
But that's about that.
Anyone on here that can provide some extra help as to where in the cut to anchor up (as the tide rips through there). I was thinking on the inside end.
Also when to start thinking about Prawning (remember someone saying after Easter or ANZAC day, others after the first big rain).
Seems like a nice peaceful way to spend a few hours chilling with a few beers, and ending up with a feed of fresh Mandurah prawns (here's hoping).
Cheers

Question about wire
Submitted by Belly88 on Tue, 2016-05-03 06:05Hey guys and girls, so I have a quick question about wire, now this mostly applys to expensive rigs like ballooning or shark rigs using say 3m plus of wire.. I have always used showgun nylon coated wire because I've heard fish can pick up the vibrations of non coated wire and I have caught well on it.. My problem is I get say one use out of a $20plus rig and the no matter how much or little I wash it down it starts rusting inside the nylon coating so I pretty much have to use another 3m of wire and rebuild the rig.. This doesn't bother me if I get a week at wagoe out of a rig or something of that nature but if I go for a shark fish or balloon one bait for no result and still have to redo the rig it's pretty frustrating.. Does anyone have this problem or a way around it?
Cheers Belly

FW Members Free Fish Frame Shredding Day - 10am to 6.30pm Friday 6 May at Wangara
Submitted by Mick C on Mon, 2016-05-02 21:12I have had quite a number of requests from Members wishing to use the Shredder to make a useful product from their fish waste. I have given the Shredder a good test now and it is a “beast” that will turn any raw fish product into little pieces. It is highly efficient and it can process many kilos per minute, with rate depending on the shape of the frozen fish being shredded. It is certainly capable of running for extended periods, and we are allowed to do so at our premises in Wangara
So, I would like to invite Members to come in on Friday and shred any fish product you would like for no cost. I want to see the Shredder perform over an extended period and after observing it so far, I’m sure it will – I have my own frames to process too. I would also like to offer something of potential value for Members to try, under the Shore Catch sponsorship. The Shred can be used for lots or burley purposes, and the best thing is that it is going back in the ocean rather than to landfill.
PM me if you would like to use it on Friday, and nominate the time and kilos you would like to shred. Bring the frames, etc in an esky and we will put the Shred back into it. You are encouraged to come along and give it a try – we may do a “sausage sizzle” in the late afternoon if there is enough interest.
The only stipulation is that there are no hooks in the fish. If there is metal that jams the blades of the cutting deck, the drive chain will break as the motor will not stop. Repair would be at your expense, but only if there is metal input. We will have a metal detector in the future but for the free day, we trust you “know your organic frames”.
The address is 65 Buckingham Drive Wangara. It would be good to see you. Mick

Sharpening Steels
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Mon, 2016-05-02 12:46Looking at sharpening steels for the F Dick knives the Mrs got me for my b'day and looking for some advice on which way to go. I am looking at either the Dictoron saphire cut or the Dick Finecut both oval shapped and 12".
Info on them reads: They are very similar in terms of how deeply they are grooved, but the sapphire has straight, very fine striations running from the handle to the tip as you would see on most steels. The fine cut is a wavy pattern. It kind of looks like a series of "S" shapes carved up and down the length of the rod. Because of this patterning, the fine cut is slightly more aggressive in texture than the sapphire.
I take that to mean I'll have a more polished edge but I'm also looking at getting either a polishing steel or a leather strop to get a real nice finished edge.
www.dick.de/en/tools-for-chefs-and-butchers/products/the-dickoron-family
www.dick.de/en/tools-for-chefs-and-butchers/products/for-butchers-chefs-and-households.
If I were to go for a fine cut should I also be looking at getting a sharpening stone?
