Carburetor syncroniser tool anyone have one?
Submitted by roddo on Sun, 2017-12-03 20:25Hi all
Is there anyone on here who has a carby syncroniser tool that would be willing to lend me can bring the boat to your place and do there if you would prefer should only take half hour. Happy to buy you a carton. I'm located in pinjarra but will travel to use one.
I have a yamaha f50 4st all local mechanics are booked out till the new year I recently had the carbies cleaned while up north as we picked up some dirty fuel but the mechanic didn't have a syncroniser tool so the butterflies are slightly out causing it to run a little rough.
Cheers

Submitted by travis89 on Sun, 2017-12-03 13:42fuse on my yammy has blown, lucky it happened when it was my turn to put the boat on the trailer...put a new fuse in and the moment the key is turned to crank the motor over it blows.
ignition coil, engine management system and fuel pump is labelled on the fuse
yesterday i replaced it 3 time and blew them straight away
next morning i unplugged all the ignition coils and connected them one by one whilst attempting to start the motor, trying to isolate the problem here... all six connected and the engine runs fine and no fuse blown??? any ideas anyone ???

Trailer Dramas
Submitted by stevo58 on Mon, 2017-11-20 21:39Hi all,
Just after some advice and help.....Decided to try and do a service on my trailer....I had a mate give me a hand at the start but he had to go before we finished the first wheel so i was sorta on my own for it.....Plan was to swap out the bearings and disc brake pads. It is a dual axel Dunbier trailer with disc brakes. I finished it late today and went on a little slowish test drive (up to 50-60km max). After a few kms i stopped to check it and found two hubs were very hot and also two of my bearing buddies had come off. After letting it cool for a bit I drove back home slowly and parked it up....thinking i may need to call in the professionals....but thought i would suss out here first in case it is something simple.
I pretty much followed what i had read here/youtubed and mates advice. Some things i noticed during the service....was that it was apparent the brakes hadnt been working properly for a while (rusted to glazed discs ...?heat damage and pads stuffed). I wash the trailer really well every trip with fresh water, but i am beginning to think that doing it at home and just parking it...hasnt been good....should drrive it to dry the brakes out etc.....will do that from now on......
I took the glaze/ rust off the discs carefully with a grinder and emery cloth...they came up nice and smooth and rust free...not sure if i should have binned them but thought that i would try and restore them. they seemed fine.
When putting in the new pads i had a hard time getting them in (i tried using a g-clamp and squeezing the piston back and releasing the bleed nut.....but it was still very tight and on one wheel i had to gently tap the brake unit onto the disc....this made it pretty hard to turn the wheel....i know it is meant to rotate freely.....this wasnt one of the hot hubs though.
I also made sure to back the castle nut back off a bit so it wasnt tight....but the wheel was pretty hard to impossible to spin freely....guessing this should have been a red flag I was doing something wrong?? .... with the brake unit i tighened up two nuts holding the slides up tight....not sure if this is correct? I also lubed up the slides with Magnesium grease.....used good Japanese bearings and high quality marine grease......
I realise I'm probably doing a few things wrong....so don't crucify me......just after some advice......the videos etc made it look like a pretty straight forward job.........how wrong i was.... :(
thanks in advance

Speaker Cutouts
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Fri, 2017-11-17 16:27I am going to install an extra 2 speakers at the rear of the boat and they need a 130mm cutout. I'm not too keen on paying $50-60 for a hole saw bit I'll use once so will I get away with taping the area with painter's masking tape and using a fine jigsaw bit to cut out a circleish hole?
It's around 8-10mm of fibreglass/gelcoat I'll be cutting through and I don't have any other cutting tools besides an oscillating multi tool.
Cheers

1992 Evinrude 70HP breaking down getting worse
Submitted by paulbazza on Fri, 2017-11-17 08:59I have a 1992 Evinrude 70HP, in pretty good condition and good service history.
Around 12 months ago, while driving along, the motor would 'miss' for a split second, then keep running, it would only do this once on every trip.
Now the motor is 'breaking down', sort of like a fuel blockage, does this for about 5 seconds, then clears and fires back up to normal revs. But it is doing this on about 4 occasions every trip.
However, when heading back in from fishing, the motor can run fine for the 15/20 minute trip back to the ramp, doesnt miss a beat.
Mechanic has gone over the motor on the past 2 services, cant find anything obvious, and cant re-create the issue while running the motor at home.
Any body had similar issues before ??

Repair or replace volvo penta
Submitted by GraemeE on Thu, 2017-11-16 12:15Hi all..new fella here.
Have purchased a 20ft regent viscount with a aq145 i think and 280 leg.My question is what is the best way to check motor is ok.The circ pump and alternator are frozen but motor winds over.Thinking of doing compression test before i go ripping it out. Toying with putting a pod and about 175-200hp behind or maybe just cutting transom out and building splash well in.Budget is limited as the project boat came out of the blue. Otherwise cut hull up and send to tip..lol

TM260 on a 6m signature
Submitted by crano on Wed, 2017-11-08 15:52Hi I have been running my transducer out near the edge of the boat to get it to work. I made a bracket that is adjustable up and down and for angle to try to work out how to run it in the conventional position. Tried it out today and could not get above 15 mph before dropouts.
Has anybody here got a transducer running properly on a 6m signature and if so could they send a picture.

Ally welding...how & what?
Submitted by Seafari on Mon, 2017-10-30 10:31Hey Guys and Gals,
I'd like to learn how to weld ally. Nothing too serious to start out with, maybe welding up an ally bait board and some other accessories but with the long term goal of welding together my own ally boat from one of those kits....maybe.
I've done the YouTube "thing" and spoken to the guys at a few local tool shops who sell welders. The machine that looks best value is the Gigaweld 3 in 1 with a few extras like the spool feed on the gun etc.
I'm wanting the welds to be neat, strong and not too difficult so if it means buying a slightly better than the cheapest machone available then I'd be happy to spend the extra.
Anyone out there got some good advice?
Thanks

Suzuki DF100B vs DF100A
Submitted by jay_burgess on Sun, 2017-10-29 19:53So besides the obvious weight saving with the 100B sharing the same block as the 70/80/90 and the 100A sharing the same as the 115 and 140, why would one go for the 100A? Suzuki are going to continue to sell it, what advantages would it have seeing as it has the same output?

5.8m trailcraft trailblazer with 200hp?
Submitted by travis89 on Sat, 2017-10-28 11:42just wanted some opinions, i have just bought a boat from over east for a good deal and is on its way home
just thought a yamaha 200hp 4 stroke on the back seems a bit over the top, the plate on the boat says it can take one but it seems like a lot of engine for a boat that size
should i worrie about downsizing and saving on fuel ?? the owner says it will do 30l an hour at 25kn, is that not too bad?

non slip coating for new deck
Submitted by rtomkyns78 on Wed, 2017-10-25 15:15I have to replace the plywood deck in my 4.85 aluminium cuddy, I plan to use the 12mm marine grade ply which will be painted with a non-slip coating and then use the rubber matting over the top. I have looked into the Norglas products but they seem pretty expensive is there a cheaper alternative to a non-slip marine grade coating. I have searched the site but most advice was for glass boats or for people who wanted carpet. Any help would be great, Thanks.

Odyssea
Submitted by Pukahuni on Sat, 2017-10-21 22:32Does anyone know anything about the build quality, ride quality of the small boat builder Odyssea Fabrication in O'Connor?
Have seen the ocassional one come up in a boat yard or on gumtree, but hard to find out any information or reviews about them.
I would greatly appreciate any heads up from owners or anyone who has even experienced the ride in such a plate boat around 7m.
Not keen on the usual glass v plate discussion, hoping someone may know something or someone specific about Odyssea.
Thanks in advance.
Full boat strip and repaint.....Surge....JLM Bodywork
Submitted by sunshine on Fri, 2017-10-20 14:42Members would have seen Surge, a member on here, offering his services for boat strip and repaint. Well I took advantage of his services and I thought others on here might be interested in the end result. Unfortunately I did not take before and after photos....only the finished product.....but suffice to say paint was lifting badly, bubbles and corrosion under the non-slip coatings and under gunnels were flaking like dandruff.
Am I happy with the result, absolutely, but judge for yourself! Would highly recommend JLM Bodywork for boats and having seen the numerous photos his vehicle work equally impressive

Alloy trilhulls - Air riders or Mirage - any input would be appreciated
Submitted by Youssef T on Mon, 2017-10-16 19:12Hi All,
I've an old man who doesn't handle the rolling effect at rest very well. He is fine while the boat is moving, but being tossed around while fishing is not his cup of tea.
I spent a fair bit of time researching into hull types that would provide the best stability at rest; and almost came to the conclusion that a trihull would be the most suitable for a 7.5m boat (please correct me if I'm wrong, I dont know much by all means). other option was to get a gyroscope fitted in but that would take too much space, need a dedicated generator, and no way I would pay 26k for an up to 5 ton gyro. I looked into CATs at this size boats and it looks like in order to get big difference in stability at rest then you may consider having a beam wider than 2.7m! Again that what I have been told by multiple people, and through researching online.
I'd appreciate any input from trihull owners or anyone who can help me making my decision. I'm looking into the "Air Rider" by GMD and "Mirage" built by preston marine. If you own either designs I'd love to hear from you. Dad still has 3 years to retire, so I still have plenty of time to decide.
Thanks alot in advance.
Youssef

Help required with fuel tank for old Quintrex refit..
Submitted by Wannafish on Sun, 2017-10-15 20:00G'day guys,
I have just started a re-fit on my old 1982 Quintrex Fishhabout Centre Console 5.0m and am up to deciding what to do for the fuel tank.... I have always used portable tanks, but want to fit an under-floor tank.. I was ready to buy a New Era poly tank of 45L (as that is all that would fit in the space without a custom make), but I would like to see if there are any Fishwrecked members who make custom tanks, or know of anyone who could...??? The space is about 800 x 500 x 240 high, so it can hold a lot more than 45L (and that is without following the v...)
Any help / contacts etc would be greatly appreciated, and a write-up will follow!!!
Thanks heaps
Drew

Fuel issue??
Submitted by crabking on Sun, 2017-10-15 13:40Hi Guru's - I went out from Mandurah today - boat ramp to James sSevice reef - ran beautifully- left it idling while we set up fishing gear as I knew we would have to go back to my mark to start the drift ,,,, anyway - after about 5 min the motor sounde like it ran out of fuel and died. Located fuel primer bulb - was soft (not collapsed) - pumped up a few times until bulb wa hard - started and ran - went back to my mark - drited with engine off, started again headed over to another nearby mark- same thing except underway this time. Started again -same procedure as before - issue repeated itself again - s o I called it and headed home - engine died 3 more times on the way in - started again using above procedure - made it back to the ramp. Each time the primer bulb was soft and took a while pumping to firm it up - any idea on likely culprit - if it was the fuel pump it would be either working or not - I don't think they work a bit and then stop working and then repeat that cycle? Any input much appreciated.

Yamaha command link gateway
Submitted by shortfuse on Sat, 2017-10-14 16:24Has anyone been successful connecting their multi function display to the Yamaha command link bus without the Yamaha command link nmea2000 gateway. By the time you buy the Yamaha gateway and required leads its $500 odd seems way over priced for what is probably a switch device for the nmea 2000 backbone Have heard mixed info that it can be done using the Lowrance lead but the 12v needs to be isolated by either cutting the power wires or using a isolation tee on the backbone.
thanks

New trailer options
Submitted by reece on Sat, 2017-10-14 07:22Looking at options for a new trailer. Seems to be a few really cheap Ali kits and pre made options on the market at the moment. Has any one heard bad reports or good reports about them?? Looking at sum thing to suit a 24' glass boat rated to around 3.5t with electric breaks and drive on.
Theres the usual brand making sum nice trailers but I can't see where the $12k-$18k price tag is coming from when you compare them to the lesser known brands??

Lifting eye
Submitted by gruntre69 on Fri, 2017-10-13 11:33Does anybody have a lifting Eye tool that would suit a Mercury 150 4 Stroke? It's the 3 bolt type and the Pitch Cicrle Diameter is about 110mm.
I want to adjust the height of my outboard. Alternitavely I could do it with a sling. Has anybody used a sling to lift a large outboard?
I have a forklift available...

Razerline Bilge pump replacement
Submitted by Hewso on Mon, 2017-10-09 19:58Hi guys, I've just bought my first boat, a 2005 Razerline eclipse and there is a few things I need to fix on it, I was hoping for some advice.
- the bilge pump needs replacing, does anyone know where it actually is on these? The carpets' glued down to the whole floor, so it'd be good to know where it is before I start hacking at it.
- the scuppers at the back of the boat seals are all perished, does anyone know where I can find replacements for these?
Thanks
