Camping spots
Submitted by sea-kem on Sat, 2013-06-15 17:43Can anyone suggest a camping spot (where we won't get mugged and beaten ;) between Gero and Carnarvon. Just starting to plan next years Gnaraloo trip. Was thinking we would leave on a Thurs arvo and get up that way aprox 9-10 pm so camp and do the rest the next day. It's an epic 13hrs in one hit so a split trip and a few beers on the way would be nice. Cheers Andy

Burrup Penisular - "jump-up" 4WD question
Submitted by Iceman on Thu, 2013-06-13 08:59Heading to Karratha in a couple of weeks and will be looking to go out to the Peninsular for some LB fishing in some of the bays and see the sights.
Have read about a spot called the "Jump-Up" which is a steep incline on one of the tracks in. Just looking for any information such as difficulty etc. Any Photos would be handy and is there a way around it.
I have 150 series Toyota Prado.
Only there for a couple of days.

Is there a mobile friendly site coming out anytime soon?
Submitted by Gezza on Wed, 2013-06-12 20:25I gotta admit, i would spend triple the time on this site if it was responsive (mobile friendly) or even turned into an app..
Surfing this site on a mobile is a nightmare..
Anything in the pipeline?

Man missing off rocks at Quobba
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2013-06-12 15:28A man is missing after falling from rocks north of the Blowholes.
Not sure on exactly where he went in at the moment because I'm down in Gero at the moment and communications are scratchy, but from what I can gather its south of Cuvier.
The 2 tugs and line boat from Rio Tintos Cuvier operations raised the alarm as they were travelling up to the cape and one of our rescue vessels was sent as soon as we found out.
Both our boats will be on the scene around first light tomorrow morning to continue the search.

Anyone seeing whales heading nth and how far out?
Submitted by duges66 on Mon, 2013-06-10 23:18Took this pic around Sept/Oct 2011 out the back of Rotto. I'd taken the misses & daughter out to watch the whales migrating south and had a mind blowing experience when a couple of Orcas showed up and we had them swimming beside the boat. I had no idea they were around our shores. Now the misses is always keen to go whale watching in the hope of experiencing this again. I've only ever bothered when they are heading south later in the yr but the misses is onto me asking if they are about at the moment. I'm led to believe when heading nth they are way out wide hence the charterers only go out when they are heading south, plus also they have the calves? So is anyone seeing whales heading nth and how far out?

BLACK LIGHT needed for a day
Submitted by Michael Yoni on Mon, 2013-06-10 22:40
Hi all, this is a bit of a long shot but thought I would ask anyway.
I have been asked to do a science demonstration by my son’s school teacher. After talking to her about it we agreed to focus on health and hygiene.
I have a powder which we use at work that is used to check for contaminations etc and even though you cannot see it under white (normal) light but it glows under UV light. The plan is to get the children to play with various colours of play-dough first with the powder in it and then show them what its like to play with dirty hands by using the light, then get them to wash their hands. This will show that they do not wash their hands properly. (all a bit of fun).
Then also demonstrate the power of a sneeze (by imitating a spray bottle as your nose) and spray it as you sneeze use the light to show how much it spreads.
Also other various experiements with the powder.
I was wondering if anybody has a black light that I could borrow for the day for this demonstration. Preferably one the size of an average key board. Woud prefer not to use one of those long tubed ones as they would be too big and prone to breaking.
I could go out and purchase one but for the sake of a single use its not worth it.
If anyone does have a black light – for those who do not know it’s a UV light source. Its those that you see at the night clubs, or on that telemarketing channel at 3am.
I am not too sure if those UV lights that you have on the aquarium work, but to try it I will make my way to an aquarium shop to test.
The sort of UV light we have at work is the dangerous sort that kill bacteria, viruses and will cause skin cancer as such are not suitable in a school environment.
I am not sure of the date I would need it but would be looking maybe in July-August.
Please PM be if you do have one that I may possibly borrow in the near future.
I am in the Palmyra area.

Got a full bottle of Helium left over...
Submitted by mrwinta on Mon, 2013-06-10 20:35I have a full E size bottle (approx 15 x 36" balloons) of helium that is still untouched from the Steep Point trip that I went on 2 weeks ago.... the weather didn't like us while we were there so no ballooning done...
So I don't wan't anything for the gas but at $280 per bottle I would rather someone get the use out of it than send it back to BOC full.... I would need to give the bottle back in about a month or it would be another $35 for 2 months extra rental.....
If you could use it up then give me a bell 0404441369
Cheers

Footy tipping - Am I wrong
Submitted by duges66 on Sun, 2013-06-09 21:43OK so I'm running a weekly tipping comp at work. It has come down to 3 tippers that can possibly win & all 3 have Collingwood by various margins - one asked what happens if Melbourne get up or there is a draw? My answer is that the person with the lowest points tipped for a Collingwood win gets the chocolates as he's the closest to the result.
Seems logical to me, but he reckons all 3 should share the winnings.
How would you play it?

What get's my goat up
Submitted by sea-kem on Thu, 2013-06-06 13:37I have recently taken time out lately to try and help a couple of members on here with projects and materials, one being a fairlly complex one and I spent a bit of my own time trying to work out the basics of the job so I could price it for him. The other was just for a supply of materials. What gets my goat up is that these guys never had the courtesy to get back to me one way or the other. Maybe the price was too high whatever. It'd be nice know. I won't name anyone just pisses me off.

Cape Cuvier repeater
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2013-06-05 16:38This afternoon the new repeater station on Cape Cuvier was turned on and is now operational.
IT works on channel 81 VHF and in theory should provide coverage from Carnarvon up as far as Gnaraloo depending on the shadow of Red Bluff. It should cover the western side of Bernier and Dorre islands as well.
Carnarvon sea rescue are purchasing extra radios for their main and home bases so that coverage can be maintained without having to switch off either 16 or 73, the channels we normally monitor.
If there is anyone heading up to Gnaraloo in the immediate future can they contact me via pm so we can test it out as far as range goes once they are up there.
Upgraded the tinny to this!!
Submitted by kirky79 on Wed, 2013-06-05 12:40Well it's been a great 10 years with my 4.45m Stessco Tinny. Plenty of nice fish have come over the side, and she has yet to let me down. But with the kids getting older, and me wanting to get out a bit wider. It was time to start considering what we needed. The wife has been bounced around up the front of the tinny long enough, so was looking for fibreglass in the 5.5m to 7m range under 50k.. This was the result!!
A
Trophy 2052 Walkaround, with the 120hp Cummins Diesel. Stoked!!
Picked it up on Friday, took it for a run on Sunday arvo, the kids loved the fact it had a steering wheel and a cabin. Took it out from Mandurah then back in thru Sticks just getting the feel of her. Tied up and had dinner at Circerellos. Very happy family
The
plan was to have Monday off and take my son, brother in law and his son, to blood the decks. We only went to the FFB but the first fish over the side was this little dhuey, to my brother in law. Hopefully onwards and upwards from here! Ended up with a feed of skippy.

Cheers
Chris

Treat your new owner well girl .................
Submitted by alfred on Sun, 2013-06-02 15:35I still remember the feeling, it was like Christmas morning and I was just about to unwrap a huge present. It’s a funny sensation, the one where you know what’s inside and you’re still you’re excited.
She was like a big toy that needed some assembly and I decided she would get the best toys I could find. Extra care was taken with all installations, all glass edges epoxy sealed, all splices soldered and covered with glue lined heat shrink tubes and all plugin connections coated with deoxit. All screws holes were sealed with 3M 5200.
Once done, she took us out to play and she didn't disappoint, we ran with the dolphins, played with seals. She took us everywhere and went about doing it in style. She had a nice solid feel to her and was never unsettled regardless of the weather conditions.
She found us some fish, including my first metro Mackie
During Salmon season she inspired enough confidence to back right in to where the fish were holding
She even helped an unnamed regular deckie of mine practice his unorthodox method of hooking fish
When we went diving, she always knew where the crays were and we never came back empty handed.
She also provided us with the ability to have mini get aways at Rotto, which the kids just love
but sadly it was also her undoing …………………..
The kids are now asking “Dad, can we overnight at Rotto?”
It was a tough decision, but I was approached by a buyer that I know will look after her well, infact she will now have her own shed to live in, but never the less, it’s really sad to see her go.
Bye, bye girl, thank you for all the good times and look after your new owner well ……………………………

Splicing trailer wiring

Re-wiring a trailer and will need to connect2 wires to one in some areas. I came across this on another forum, but the chap who posted didn't mention who the seller was. Just that he got it on ebay. Wondering if anyone has seen anything like this and where they can be sourced.
Thanks for any leads

Raymarine Dragonfly without GPS?
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sun, 2013-06-02 07:57After reading the Raymarine Dragonfly review in another thread, its got me wondering whether there is a model from them or another maker that doesn't have the GPS in the unit or do you have to go with the combo
Very impressed with the reports and where most of my fishing is usually under 40-50 metres it would be magic unit.

Sold
Submitted by davidbland50 on Wed, 2013-05-29 20:12Saw the back of the Douglass Craft last week. Sold it to a guy up on one of the oil rigs. Sure he will get plenty of enjoyment out of it.
Managed to find our dream boat and bought it with a big smile. Needs very little work to bring her to her former glory. Already had her out off Ocean Reef and in the river and it rides beautifully.

Submitted by mickypap on Wed, 2013-05-29 12:28hi guys
Im trying to plumb my underfloor kill tank to the back of my boat, I want it to be open at the aft of the boat so water can rush in and drain out easily but i want to be able to block it off at the kill tank end from the inside like a bung. problem is I cant find a bung to mount in there where I can attach the hose to the back side. has anyone had this issue before or can suggest any ways of doing in that are as practical and good seal like a bung would? it is a ally kill tank bout 3mm thick walls.
