Snapper off the beach

Went for a lazy fish on Sunday at a south metro beach with a mate, he was targeting sharks (and got smoked) and I was as usual targeting Mulloway.  Had a sand whiting I had caught 20 min earlier taken by this monster.

Pretty bl00dy stoked with this fish, was outta the blue and guess I was just in the right place at the right time. From nose to fork was 1mt.  Good reward for many hours put into beach fishing lately.

Rod Daiwa Ballistic

Reel Shimano Thunnus bait runner spooled with 30 pound Finns braid.

Running sinker down to a 1 mt 60 pound trace and a pair of snelled Gamakatsu's.

Apologies for the pictures had some better ones but they might show where it is.

Exmouth trip

Just got back from a quick week long trip to exmouth.  Wind blew its nuts off for all but one day.  We braved it some days and shore fished in little protected bays the others, and spent an arvo flicking lures around the marina.  Plus we drunk beer and ate at pinnochios and planet burger when we felt like it.

Brought a few spangly fillets home as well as some cod, and released a heap of goldens and a couple of bonefish as well.  Didnt get sharked once, even including a few hours bottom fishing out from south passage.  Saw a few, but landed all our fish.

A roo decided it didnt like a mudguard on my trailer on the trip up so we did some running repairs with a blue chemical drum in carnarvon

And some more

First Land based Snapper

The fish was measured at 89cm , I am not sure of the weight. THE FISH WAS RELEASED AND SWAM AWAY STRONG.

Gummy Trouble

Decided to comitt to a late night fish last night with a mate just off a metro beach south of the sound. Was due for a good session and last nights comittment definately payed off with three decent size gummy sharks, all within 1 and half hours.

Left with them still on the bite, but had enough to feed us and share with a few mates

Done for Donuts

Been a bit slack & haven't popped up any pics of recent trips out, after a phone call from another member last night to remind me that we "were a bit quiet" I thought I would pull the finger out.

Another reason for some tumbleweeds is I got done for donuts by Seaquest last week, who clearly rubbed his wedding tackle or some sh!t all over my spool because I couldn't get a freakin' hookup on plastics or jigs & had a case of dropsies! Was a hard day with a northerly drift & painful to see good fish lit up on the sounder but they didn't want to play, anyway there are two certanties 1) pics will tell the story 2) Seaquest will keep reminding me of his BOG performance

Jurien trip - first Dhuie!

Headed up to Jurien a couple of weekends back with a mate and his boat.  The conditions were pretty good but we spent most of the time in about 8-15m of water sounding out lumps and throwing plastics and flies on sinking lines.

Having never caught a Dhuie before I was pretty please to land a small one which went back quickly to swim another day.  Feeling chuffed I dropped the same placcy back down again and managed instantly hooked up on an 70cm + jobbie!  Had another drop and just as I was thinking in my head "this would be bullshit if I got a third" the rod comes up tight and up comes another 70cm fish!  Also managed a 20kg Sambo in 8m of lumpy stuff that pulled like a freight train.

Pretty top fishing for just how close/shallow we were!

fair few winter tailor

just throwing up a few pictures of some decent tailor ive got over the last few weeks when ive had the chance to get out for a flick, all where caught on lures and 10lb on a certate 2506 and 2-5kg pflueger rod, dam the go hard on such light gear!!!!

the photo of the location (its north metro) ive edited out a bit of it to hide its location but you still get the idea of how much foam and wash is around there and also how much reef you have to try and stop them from getting to on the light stuff.

PB Dhuie on a straight hook!

Went out today with a couple of guys NOR and managed to get a couple of nice Dhuies, mine beaing my PB, in about 12m of water, weighed in at 12kgs gutted. I must say it was wamer in the water than out, but still had fun

NOR Metro Tailor

I'm still very much on the Perth metro fishing learning curve, and my notable captures so far have been few and far between so thought I may as well share this one, such as it is.

I had planned on heading up to Capricorn for an early morning tailor fish, but ended up hitting the snooze button a few too many times, so by the time I was ready to go it was nearly high tide and I decided to head to my local NOR metro beach (Burns) instead. The last time I caught a tailor there was two years ago, and that was a rat, so my hopes weren't all that high for much more than a pleasant stroll and watching the sun rise.

Tied on a Maria Bull Chop and started walking and casting from the rock groyne heading north. Not much (nothing) happened until just about dead on the high tide and a fair way up the beach when I got smashed a fair way out in some clear water. Quite a few minutes and a lot of 'oh please...oh please..!' later (was only using a 3000 size reel with 12lb line) landed this beauty of a tailor and my PB so far. Fished on for a bit after but was so stoked that I wasn't even really trying anymore so decided to head back in with my prize and knock up some brunch. Went just on 58cm.

Another bloody sambo, so what

Went to my usuall spot, which is only about 1 km off shore, early this morning hopin for a pinkie. Only fished sp's and burleyed up. The skippy were thick and when my mate's got nailed by Uncle Sam just at the back of the boat bringin it up, the next went back with a hook in it. I procedeed to 'lob' the livey out but the bail arm had flicked over and the weight of the 35cm skip took the rod outa my hands. Rugged up with several layers and uggies, I jumped in draggin another rod overboard in the process. I saved both rods, and swam like a hairy as fuck dog back and climbed aboard, laughed then let the skippy out again and soon it was on. Bigger than I would expect to get very close to land but good fun and easily my biggest fish in Perth. Theres gota be better table fish below......next time. Gota clean some reels out now.

Morning Metro

Hi all,

I've been having a play on my fav metro beach spot in recent mornings with a certain level of success. I have fished this spot over a number of years with relative success but its very dependent on specific conditions to fish well.

Heres a couple of photos of catches from that spot, sorry most are kill shots but its hard to get good photos in the morning light. All fish caught on various baits.

Enjoy!

Starlo's MEGA Queenie

Just came across this on Facebook, though some might like it.

Words and pic taken from his Facebook page-

The fishing gods smiled on me this afternoon and let me land one of those genuine "fish of a lifetime" we all dream about... I could count on one hand the angling encounters I've had that have made me shake as much as this one did, and doing it on a 9 weight fly rod made it doubly memorable. Casting a nondescript little #1 Clouser towards rocks at the western end of Channel Island in Darwin Harbour, I connected with the biggest queenfish I've ever seen — in flesh or photo. Half a wild hour later, this giant queenie sadly had barely a kick left in it at boat-side, effectively ruling out a release, so I'll be getting a wall mount made. For the statistically minded, this amazing specimen was 130cm long overall, 114cm nose-to-fork and weighed a whisker over 16 kilos... The photos don't show the thickness through its head and shoulders... Those repeated, explosive jumps are forever etched on my cerebral cortex I am still trembling as I type this!

long weekend Quobba trip

hi lads, thought i would share some of the photos from my quobba trip.

first time up there and man that place sure is an awesome place to fish, went up there with my mate Russ for 5 nights and we managed to hit the westher perfectly sunny days the whole time. all up we hooked unto 8 mackies, only landing 1 with the other 7 being lost to sharks, couldnt believe how bad they were up there. Was absolutely as it was my first mackie ever caught landbased on my first time ballooning was approx 13kg, still cant wipe the smile off my face. The bottom bashing was decent with us catching baldies, spanglies, sand snapper,  redthroat, bluebone and spanish flag.

hope you lads enjoy the photos and cant wait to get back up there

Cheers

Reece

Dampier Billfish Shoot Out. Champion Team!!!

Hi all we entered in the shoot out earlier in the week i thought i might share my story! this was our first comp and we had some tough competition. i think there was over 50 boats entered

Day1: We got up super early and we were out at the ships ready go by 6. Conditions were looking not to bad. we had our livies out all morning with little action till about 10 and we tagged and relised our first black (about 40kg) Then after lunch we moved to a new spot and sent the livies out as the boys were sending out the third rod all hell broke loose all 3 rods went off, triple hook up! I jump out of my seat to grab the third rod which had a black on it. the other 2 boys were tangled together and also around the outrigger. chris's fish got off and they got the lines clear and when chris wound his line in a saily chased it all the way to the boat then smashed it less then a metre from the boat! so we had 2 blacks and a saily hooked up so i was driving the boat as well as trying to hang on to a rod with the other hand and eventually my fish got off and we tagged and relised the black and the saily. 1 hour later we hooked another sail fish which managed to bust us off (10kg line comp). We finished day1 in top spot with 2500points and a 1500 point lead!! only 10 fish caught for the day

Day2: Should of stayed in bed! We were out on the water super early again with a real sore head after alot of celebrating the previous night. conditions were absolutly shocking with big winds and big swells. after about 5 hours we had seen one black and the boat fishing close to us hooked and lost a black and we thought a hot shower and a pub feed was a good idea. so after a long ride in at 10knots in a 26foot boat just as we got close to nelson rocks my engine alarms went off and turned out my kill tank pump and broke off allowing all the water coming over on to the deck to flood my bilge and then my bilge pump failed then my oil tanked tipped upside down and fried the motor, and just to top it off a wire snapped off a circuit breaker and killed all my electrics GREAT! So we managed to get  enough life out of the motor to prevent drifting in to the rocks and got to the saftey of a bay and tied off to a mooring. i managed to use my jumper pack to pump the water out and make a radio call and we got picked up my another boat and taken back to base. Only 4 fish caught for the day we still are holding a 1500point lead

Day 3: Conditions are evan worse and we are unable to tow the boat in with my friends boat so it was pretty tense day sitting round wondering if my boats alright and also wondering if anyone was going to take our lead off us. Im not 100% sure but i think there was only 6 fish tagged maybe more and one boat come very close to taking it out but luck was on our side and we won! Champion Team 2012 The Wolf Pack!

Day4 Conditions probably evan worse again so ill made the call to sea rescue and we left just after lunch and finally got the boat in at 8.30 that night. Thanks alot to West Pilbara Sea Rescue those guys were legends. I have now offered my services as a volunteer for the sea rescue team (if they will have me) probably the least i can do.

Cheers Pricey

C-Man

Caught this puppy bout 9 mile off broome, ball sinker straight to hook, prawn bait. Grabbed it on the bottom and took off to the surface on some big runs, thought it was a shark, turned it and it went deep, took a little while to get in, hardest fighting fish i have caught to date. Also got some blueys and snapps but they couldnt come close to the power in this thing.

Flying the fly round 3 picture heavy

Well everyone, with the long weekend just gone, i got two solid days of fishing in. Head back up to tamanuri (not correct spelling)....

Sunday woke up to a cold misrable foggy day...what can you do the weather wasnt with us, but there was zero wind. So couldnt really complain, on went the thermals, t shirt, waders jumper then rain jacket. Met up with my guide and talked about the plan for the next two days. The morning was to head off to a new river, in search of bigger browns and rainbows, but just less of them. The afternoon was more sightfishing in small streams for spawning fish.

We headed off into the AWSOME senic landscapes of rolling hills, fog in the vally, till we finally came to a point in the river. Right he said pointing out where to cast, where they will be sitting etc etc. Hes teaching me as eventuelly im going to do it by myself and venture out into the wilderness all on my own. The first hour not much was happening, till my guide noticed some orange peel and a couple foot steps directly behind we were fishing, right he saids stop fishing the edges, extend your trippet and straight in the fast water. First cast bang i was on. A nice small 4 pound rainbow was soon on the shore. Again next cast right into the middle o the fast water, and bang i was on with a slightly bigger , very acrobatic rainbow going 5 pounds.

We started talking what to look for on the shore line for factors about where the fish will be, generally the fast water they dont like unless the push deep, or are some what spooked. Its a good place to fish if all else fails working the side currents of the rapid.

We mooved on with a bit of a treck and rapid wading through some AWSOME scenary. Next pond was going to be a challenge witha  huge cast required to get over to the fishy waters...i was struggling so i looked up and posed the question what about at the bottom of the rapids, and he was like yeah i was going to get you to fish there next, and a through a short 3-4m cast into the first current and bang i was fighting a sizeable fish, after roughly 5-10 mins of running up and down into rapids out of rapids trying to not get burried by this guy, i sort of new it a brown, and yerh my PB brown was netted a few snaps and we were swimming him for around 3-4 mins till he gave me his kick and off he went, we pulled another couple rainbows from the deeper pool nothing to write home about. (photo 4/5)

With the weather setting in we had some lunch and mooved back up the river, its started getting fairly wet and the rocks were slippery, and we came across  a nice deep pool and off i went at the bottom of the rappids and let it swing out and it didnt last longer then 30 seconds till my indicator went down and i had a very decent acrobtic bouncing around, we both just didnt know how big, till tens minutes later with the fish netted i had got my PB rainbow being over 8 lbs, the photos werent the best as i left the camera at home and resulted to my iphone.....(photo 6/7 )

We left this larger river system for a small stream comming off it and it was time for a new lesson big fish really really small systems. I kind of laughed at my guide saying we will catch shitty little one pounders and boy i was wrong from small systems  with the width of 3 m half of it would be a deep pool, and put it in the fishy areas generally resulted in a rainbow. We did this fishing all the way up the stream with him teaching me about sight fishing when we came across pairs getting ready to spawn.

Monday, woke up with glorious sunshine but alot of fog throughout the valleys but that soon cleared. Plan was to go out and have some fun where we fished last week and find pools of spawning fish waiting for the next set or rains to moove further up the system. Most pools we encountered had at least one fish, with 3-5 fish not uncommon. Got some nice browns and rainbows through out the morning.....

Afternoon came and he said right we are gonig to go stalk spawning pairs now properly, so we drove up to where we finished last night, and the rules were set, ultra quiet do not stand in the skyline, and no pointing, talk to each other softly when coming across fish. We fishing always water gnerally less then a foot deep for actuel pairs of fish. Proper sight fishing. afternnoon was spent chasing pairs and single fish with some sucess, i generally spooked the fish off with not so accurate casts.... Large river systems you have a nice range to get it into the right waters, small spawning streams if your not accurate generally the fish are spooked after the first cast. We came across some nice awsome browns and a couple rainbows, but generally all browns. Highligh of the day was a brown burring me in a hole only for us to somehow get it out and via the net and hands! haha

its getting to the point now where nice fish we dont even bother photoing unless there all coloured up...im finally understanding the facination and skill of fly fishing and everyday its grows more on me...i love the challenge!

ENJOY!

pb mulla

went out in the sound friday night searching for snapper and with shit weather we thought we would anchor close to woodies jetty with all the mulloway reported there recently.

so we anchored up and burley up, had the usual plague of rays and banjos with a couple of bite offs from toothys, i decided to go a bit lighter on my leader and whacked on an old bit of squid with it being in the water for no more than 5 minutes my trinidad started screaming, set the hooks and new straight away it was no sting ray.

10 minutes later a big mulloway was in the boat :)

it measured 130cm and im guessing 20kg+, did weigh it but it was very heavy.

3 Nights Of TAILOR Fishing!!

For the last 3 nights from Tuesday the 29th till Thursday the 31st i have been landbased fishing for tailor of the beach at my fav spot and have done really well

1st Night = 1 Decent size tailor

2nd Night = Another 3 tailor 2 over the 50cm mark and one a bit smaller

3rd Night = Finally a Monster Greenback Weighing in at 3 1/2 Kg and 70cm in length

There big, there fat and very green

PB Sambo

Thought i would share my biggest sambo to date that i managed to catch few weeks back on mates boat in 11 meters of water just behind garden island.

Weighed 20 + kg ( As you can see struggling to lift the big fella up, bloody horse of a fish and fought like a bull on roids )

Flying the fly round two.

Well it came that time of the week, saturday knock to go pack the bags and head up into the northen islands mountain ranges and get back to some time away
Fished a different area today (not telling, sorry i know there are some kiwis on here), far off from taupo, and being back water country. Which generally means non spawning fish, of fish mooving up the river to start spawning, which means BIGGER FISH!

Met up with my friend/guide at around 830 and we got off the main roads, and started heading into rural farm land. A quick chat and discussion on the plan of the day, while telling me hes sorted me a rod worth 1000 NZ for basically half the price, due to him being a guide and getting heavily discounted. It was a sabre 6 wt rod, and aKilwell genesis 2 with shark skin fly line.

Off we went trecking through the farm paddocks and climbing down some ledges to get to our first spot. Again after some discussion with Pete the guide teaching me how to read water, and where i should be casting into.It was first cast, and bang, after a short couple minutes , i had another species ticked off the list being my first brown. Browns fight different rainbows are aerial and generally are clean fighters with acrbatics that put a aussie salmon to shame. Browns on the other hand are all about the snags and the rocks.

I was fighting a nice rainbow of estimated around 5 pounds, for around 5 mintues till he did me in back flipping out of the water to spit the hooks. i was spewing.

It was some what a slow morning, with the wind playing havoc with my inexperienced casting, and missing fish strikes. and it pelting down with rain.We stopped for some lunch talked some more about reading the water and decided to head north along the river looking for likely areas. While mooving along the banks i slipped and went C*** up (down the bank) rolling through sludgey cow and sheep shit and it was so pleasent, luckily my new rod and reel was in good nic still! We found a nice area with some rapids and hard pushing current into a nice slow mooving pool, and two of three casts later, i was onto my biggest rainbow yet, these fish are so amazing the arial acrobatics they do are just amazing. I was determined to get this one in and about 5-10 mins of fun later i had him in the net. Now this fish was in extremely good touch for eating quality, nice and silver. I decided this ones for dinner and will be the only for the day. Fishing the same area, we crossed the rapid to the middle to fish some more currents and again i had another solid rainbow on jumping around while pete also had a smaller fish on. Lost it jumped directly into  rappid and the line went slak. Oh well had some fun, i turned around to look at pete and once again i lost my footing and went into the drink, 8-10 degree water it was cold! luckily i some what landed on a rock and the rappids didnt take me for a swim.

Right now is where this day turns into one my most memorable fishing experiences of my life. We mooved more north to one of his facourite secret pools. Both had a cast and bang we were on, i fished the closer slower current and he went out to the next current, i had my first real solid brown on, him a rainbow jumping every where, he quickly his in and released, to help me with my fish as it was trying to burry me everywhere, i was chasing the fish up and down the bank till finally pete could get out and net him. My first male brown with a massive hook jaw! stoked, apparently where im going next weekend the fish are even bigger!

For the next 2.5 hours we had 14 hooks up with around 8(my inexperince once again) landed and plenty of shit talking inbetween. We ended up taking it turns to fish due to the fact these fish were all between5-7 pounds and we needed the net most times. I got the fish of the day with my last rainbow being a tad over 7 pounds in his net, and was released to fight another day, well in fact all fish from the one area were released. enjoy the photos.....Next week brings on a two day trip, (long weekend) and camping in the mountain up in a secluded cottage which will be awsome...aparently we will be chasing even bigger fish!!!

Till next time lads....Over and Out!

Decent day

Took my dad and a mate out on saturday again off Margs.  Awesome kind of day for the end of may.

Things were pretty quiet again with no BA or much bycatch at all.  But still lots of fish on the sounder.  Dad got done early on a good fish- I reckon a dhu by what was left of his leader.  Very chaffed up so Im thinking it probably had the jig down a fair way and rasped through.  That was on a shimano whirligig.

Three and a half hours in I managed a small 540mm dhuie on a 90gr eupro jig and Dad soon followed up with a 4ft bronzie on a 7 inch McCarthy and a home made 7/0 1.5Oz jighead.

Finally he got to put a decent bend in his custom rod with this dhuie going over what my 15lb boga grips could measure.  Again on the 7 inch McCarthy and same jighead- liking the Eagle Claw saltwater hooks!

Also managed a very lost squid which was drifting around in 35m of water only a metre under.  Glad I had a squid rod rigged up ready to go.

Real stoked to get the old man onto a dhuie on an artificial- Converted him from bait to lures in exmouth with huge success and now hes embracing it down here.  Nothing beats going fishing with him and seeing him enjoy a new style of fishing.  Memories I wont forget.
