southbound boats
Submitted by bouttime on Fri, 2014-12-12 18:01Still looking and found a boat builder who builds southbound boats. They have one on the market at the moment which looks like a nice setup. 6mm plate bottom, 4mm sides, hard reverse chines and fine entry. Looks like i t would travel well but cant find any info on them. Spoke to the builder today but a of course he is going to say they are a great boat.
Anyone know this brand and if they are any good or bad.
Thanks

Time to spoil myself! Barcrusher!
Submitted by kuzi on Fri, 2014-12-12 16:13Hi to all fishwrecked members!
A little intro about me and also a rant (some call it venting). A super keen fisho from the east coast who moved to WA in 2004. Previously owned a boat over east and when I moved here I built a new house with side access which I specifically designed to be able to park a large boat. Long story short but ended up with a huge debt (1.2M) due to building a second house with the purpose of selling the 1st one and moving into the new house. Thanks to the GFC I wasn't able to sell either house which meant no life and having to work 70-80 hours per week to make ends meet. This meant no boat, no fishing and no nothing excpet work, work and work. Finally in 2012 I sold the 2nd house for a gut wrenching loss of 250K but at least I get my life back. Just as my life was on the way up again my wife decided to have an affair in early 2013 and we separated. Thankfully no kids are involved which just would've complicated things even more. Now officially divorced, another 100K worse off (having to pay out the cheater thanks to our pathetic legal system), limited friends and I'm starting all over again. Its been a tough ride of 3 meter swells and 30 knot winds for the last 2 years but its time do the things I always wanted to do. Its time to buy that boat that I always wanted.
Today the wind and sea was as bad as it gets. I've always wanted to buy a Barcrusher and have only heard great things about these boats and they definitely are a great looking boat. I've never been in one before and I've heard people call them Ball Crushers so I had some reservations about them until I personally experienced one myself. Today I had the chance to go out for a test drive in a Barcrucher 730HT and geez was I impressed!!! I'm hooked to say the least.
Its now decision time! Which model and size do I purchase? If only I could afford the 730HT!! Here are the models that I'm looking at in order of preference and was wondering if others had any pros and cons for these particular models as I'm doing my head in. I don't want others to start a debate over other boat brands and whether other boats are better etc etc. I'm buying a Barcrusher as I've narrowed my list of boat brands down to the Barcrusher.
670HT-My preferred choice but a very costly boat and am a little relunctant to spend that much. Need to park it out the front of the house which concerns me over the security of leaving it out the front.
670C-Cheaper and can possibly just get it in the garage with a few adjustments although not ideal due to length. Not sure that it will keep me totally dry on a bad day. Potentially it will have to be parked out the front of the house also.
615HT-Marginally cheaper than the 670C but will keep me dry. Ride quality marginally less due to physical hull size and weight being less than the 670. Will need to park it out the front of the house.
615C-Cheapest by far (around 20K less than 670HT). Ride quality not as good as the bigger versions. Should fit it in the garage but also not ideal due to length.
This is a big investment of my money (or should I say banks money) so would like any advice to help me with my decision. Thanks in advance to everyone!
Cheers, Kuzi.

electric trailer brakes - Sensa brake
Submitted by bouttime on Wed, 2014-12-10 14:31Found a boat i am interested in although only problem i have is it has the Sensa brake setup on the trailer and i have the car set up for the Carlile Hydrastar.
Are these systems any good, trailer is 06 model.
Option i am looking at are fit the new braking unit to the car to operate the Sensabrake or refit the trailer with an all new Hydrastar system. Cost is about $1000 extra to fit new system to trailer.
Anyone use Sensa brakes and are they any good.
Cheers

Good project for someone
Submitted by z00m on Sat, 2014-12-06 10:29I saw this boat on Gumtree this morning and searched gumtree for a replacement motor for it. If you were handy you could have a big boat for less money!
Might have to post an ad to sell my cruiser and move into a more specific fishing machine like this.

Advice on seeker boat
Submitted by Paj man on Fri, 2014-12-05 11:51Hi all,
Just after some quick advice on a new seeker (seeker) boat. I'm looking at . 20ft centre console hull from the mid-late 70's with a 10yr old tohatsu 90 on the back (100hrs)
The transom and boat floor have been redone recently and the condition of the boat is pretty mint (I thought it was much newer until I was told). It comes with all electronic's and I'm planning on doing a couple of minor upgrades to suit myself. Otherwise it has all the safety gear and the trailer is just as good as the boat.
I'm sold on the boat and will get a surveyor to assess the hull before I buy however my only problem is what a suitable purchase price should be. I can't really find too many other seekers for sale and those which are have a condition and asking price lower than the one I am looking at. I can buy for $19k which is a little more than I think the boat is worth however I'm reasonably happy to spend that coin if I get a good boat out of it....IF
Can anyone offer any advice on the quality of seeker boats and anything I should be looking out for?? As mentioned the hull will be surveyed before purchasing
Thanks

The new rig
Submitted by merdel12 on Thu, 2014-12-04 13:59Well a new second hand rig.
Don't post a hell of a lot but Hopefully that will change over the summer and I can get on the water more and out further than I ever could. My previous boat was a 5.7m rib with a 115 optimax on the back (hardly a fishing boat), great for cruising around the river and over to rotto with a heap of people but the thing had 0 deck space which is somthing I desperately wanted and for obvious reasons when it came to fishing/crabbing. Had been scanning gumtree and other boat sites for the last 3 months looking for the right boat, at first I was fixed on a big american centre console, then started looking at the trophies and again changed my mind to something that would be lighter to tow, would have more deckspace and could take a beating. The answer and the boat that fit my budget was the trailcraft 660 trailblazer (2006) paired with a 150 verado (200 hours). I knew how they were built and how they rode as my dad used to own a little 5.3m in which he never had problems, plus I got it at a good price!
Long story short, towed it down to mandurah on the weekend and got put for a scoop, managed 8 crabs the first morning and 15 the next, would have got more but everyone else was to scared To get their feet wet. Also managed to take it up to the ravenswood pub which was a good day out.
Theres a couple things I gota do including replacing the front 2 pieces of perspex which is stuffed and you can barely see through them (anyone knows a good place let me know) but other than that shes all good. Added some gunwale padding on the tops which looks aswesome now aswell. Previous owner glued some ugly yellow board down on the side.
Hopefully the next thread I type will have a picture of me holding something worth talking about :)

Trailer dramas
Submitted by Shacked81 on Thu, 2014-12-04 11:31Hi All,
Got home yesterday morning and while washing down the boat, sprayed the back trailer wheel and fair bit of steam came off. I'm hesitant to drive it as the last thing I want to do is take out some innocent dude/chick with a wheel. Any ideas of any good mobile mechanics around the Singleton/Rockingham/Mandurah area?
Thanks, Shacked

Honda outboard 115-130hp upgrade??
Submitted by HOOPS on Fri, 2014-11-28 00:47Hi All,
I currently have a 2006 honda 115hp on the back of my 5.8 chivers meridian. I have been doing a bit of research and have come across that the 115 & 130 is exactly the same motor and that the 115hp is just a detuned version..
Does anyone know what is involved to have the motor tuned to the 130hp? Would you need to replace the ECM or do you think it could be unlocked and mapped to the 130 and info would be appreciated and if anyone has done it give me a shout as to who and where did the work and is it worth it?
Cheers!!!

Prop Test advice
Submitted by Bunny on Tue, 2014-11-25 04:40I had an opportunity to do some prop testing on the new motor for my boat on the weekend and keen to get some expert advice from the knowledgeable folk on here.
I figured before the trial that the standard 3 blade 14 inch pitch I picked up was going to be the one after some initial tests in the Cairns inlet of three other props.
I took those with me to test as well. The testing was done at altitude and fresh water in Tinaroo dam so the numbers are skewed to what I will normally be doing. The good news is I do have some information from the salt water tests to do a bit of a comparison.
My thoughts are the 3 blade 14 inch is still the pick but keen to see what others think, especially since I didn't achieve the recommended WOT range (5500 to 6000 and I got 5350). Considering the salt water data showed a massive increase of at least 300 rpm in the other props I figured I would be fine going with the 14 X 3 blade as it will come up within range. The fresh water tests were done with a relatively full tank and two adults on board. I would say the load was on the light side with no esky, ice or fish on board. Having said that, WOT testing in the salt with the 13 X 3 showed no decline in WOT RPM between light and heavy loads.
The final prop is to be stainless too and I've heard the rpm might pick up a bit more due to the thinner blades?
Anyway some observations not shown in the pictures are that the 4 blade props do plane the boat faster and allow slower planing but in the fresh, not by much. I figure since my rev range/speed will be around the 4000 to 4500 mark and 20 knots, this was the sweet spot for the 14 X 3 although it was almost the pick all the way through. I also figured that in the salt when it gets another 300 rpm plus it will outperform the others in the higher range as well being able to generate more power?
This boat rides so well and planes easy enough I figured the few times I would need to plane slower would not outweigh the extra speed/economy the 3 blade offers in my cruising range. Hole shot is not an issue.
I still plan to do a final run in the salt to confirm but keen to get peoples thoughts on the attached information and what the stainless version might do in comparison to the alloy.
Props tested were all Alloy, the 4 blades were the spitfires. Boat is a modified Hartley Scamp design around 16 feet long, weight unknown.

Split keel 519 sea runner
Submitted by abbo_05 on Sun, 2014-11-23 13:48Hi lads
have found 2007 519 sea runner in trailer with a 90 merc with 350 hours, for 15k neg!!
The only catch is, is that it has been split and repaired!
He reakons that it doesn't take any water, but the repair job doesn't look all that flash, do u think it's just to much trouble? He said it is insured for market value of 30k so would be good if was gonna split again!
Is a place were u can check for boat write offs?
or anyone know how much it would cost to reweld?
cheers in advance

Home/Mobile Mechanic
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2014-11-23 07:43Should have posted this in here rather than general fishing.
Interested in everyone's opinions on getting my 6hp tohatsu serviced for the 3 month service.
I am leaning toward getting a home/mobile mechanic to do it as although there is a greater deal of security using one of the bigger boat stores (you would hope) I know that my little motor is going to be given to the apprentice to work on and would rather have it looked/worked on by someone with experience. Some may scoff at why I am so concerned about my little 6hp but it's my pride and joy as part of my first little river setup for me and my 4y old plus it still cost me $1700.
Has anyone used a good home/mobile mechanic NOR that I can contact and let me know where they are or would others suggest sticking to the boat store?
Cheers

Ocean whaler owners
Submitted by Marineboy on Sun, 2014-11-16 09:06hi guys
have had this feeling for a while that there may have been water in the bottom of my hull, as they are supposedly a sealed hull this shouldn't be the case.
Bit the bullet yesterday after a trip out and Went and bought a bung to install in the transom.
I drilled a pilot hole through the bottom of the transom and sure enough water started coming out, and it came and it came and it came.
I stuck a bucket under it to gauge the amount of water that was in there and to my horror about 100L was in there.
im guessing the leak is through where the scuppers are installed and it may be a really slow leak that has just accumulated over the 3 years I have had the boat.
Anyway to all other ocean whaler owners it may worth installing a bung just to be sure.

BYOB: Building your own boat- noob questions
Submitted by bushbeaver on Tue, 2014-11-11 15:58Hello all!
I'm seriously considering doing a home build of a 18ft centre console boat. The plan would be to assemble the boat from a flat pack kit, which is of course based on a proven design with the required engineering specifications. This will be a one off for personal use, and more so for the satisfaction of building it myself.
As I've not attempted something this stupid(!) before, I'd like to know if there are any snags involved in applying for a HIN number, and whether there are any other regulations to comply with.
Any advice will be appreciated.

New props - no test - now tested
Submitted by z00m on Sat, 2014-11-08 18:00I fitted my new 4 blade Merc spitfire props today. Laid on the swim platform, raised the legs and did the spannering.
It was blowing pretty good and too choppy to do any serious testing so will have to wait for another day!
The suspense is killing me! ha ha.

Next project coming along nicely - new bait tank / table
Submitted by randall df223 on Sat, 2014-11-08 16:03I wanted to improve my live bait set up, which until now has been a 60 l solo bin on the back deck with an externally mounted bilge pump. Came across a combo bait tank / table on line and found someone locally to make one up (that person can identify themselves if they wish or remain anonymous
). And it's progressing nicely!
In the meantime I am installing a stainless steel skin fitting, stopcock and bait tank pump under the tiller flat. This will also provide a pick up for the deck wash.
Will post more pics as it progresses.

Verado smart craft
Submitted by bsir on Thu, 2014-11-06 20:41Hi,
I have an issue with a verado. It wont start....or to be more precise it wont start using one of the two batteries.
Both batteries measure the same voltage, however they are quite likely holding a different charge and have slightly different capacity due to battery age/wear etc.
The battery voltage measures 12.7V.
The voltage at the starter inside the motor (with cowling removed) measures 12.7V.
There is a second supply going to the motor (maybe 1 or 1.5mm cable), this also measure 12.7 volts when I disconnect them within the motor (I have to disconnect to get the meter on them).
However, the smart gauge only reads 12.1V.
When the motor is cranked, it makes a bad clicking noise (repeatedly) like a starter gear being thrown, however it doesn't turn over. it will start off the 2nd battery no problems, but the smart gauge still only reads 12.1V.
I suspect it may be that the with the lower voltage being read at the smart gauge, and then a further volt drop with electrical load applied, it may be stopping the motor from attempting to start.
Does anyone have experience with this or know why the smart craft would read significantly less than the starter battery?
Any other reason why it would do what it is doing?
Thanks
