battery gauge
Submitted by Fletch on Fri, 2015-10-09 16:16hey all,
i have a newly acquired tinny with a 50hp Honda...electric start...sounder...lights...stereo and am wondering (concerned) about monitoring the battery use.
any suggestions on best way to do this? are portable gauges sufficient or better to look at wiring in a fixed gauge and if so, is that fairly straight forward?
anyone else have a similar set up or addressed the same thing?
Appreciate any advice.

Need to lubricate her box
Submitted by Lamby on Fri, 2015-10-09 09:36Well after years of having a nice wet box, trophy wife is going dry on me! I usually just top her off with salty water & have always been a fan of a salty box to be honest. Just looking to see if anyone uses something different like propelene glycol & if so where do you get it? Benefits over salt water? Some may use ky, I mean whatever gets you a wet one right!
Anyway I am sure there are some seamen out here that can point me in the right direction

Fraser 626-Suzuki 200hp 4cyl (DF200A)
Submitted by Tas on Mon, 2015-10-05 04:53It has an alloy tubular pod on the back, twin 110 ltr fuel tanks and previously had a 200hp 2 stroke saltwater series Mounted on it.
I am thinking of puting a Suzuki 4 stroke on the back (not sure what size is best for this boat), probably the new 200hp 4 cylinder lean burn Suzuki, has any one got one of these new engines? if so what are their thoughts? would this boat be more suited to the V6 Suzuki?
Any thoughts, comments or information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Fuel line issue?
Submitted by Ashen on Fri, 2015-10-02 05:57Hi guys.
Its been 2-3 months since I've taken the boat out (busy moving house). The last time I finished using it, it had about 1/3 fuel left in the tank. The tank is 130litre infloor ali/steel tank. When I checked on it last week, the tank had 1/2 tank of fuel. Weird! I initially thought water had leaked into the tank somehow. But i sniffed the bit of water around the tank but couldn't smell any petrol. I assumed that if water was leaking into the fuel tank, then the surrounding water would have a bit of petrol smell?
The tank has a breather hose that goes out the transom and the tip of the hose points downwards at the transom.
Hope all the above makes sense! Haha
Any suggestions?
Just to be sure, I've emptied the fuel tank but would like to find the issue (if any), before filling up the tank with fresh fuel..

Advice on a cracked compressor on a optimax 175
Submitted by surfymuzz on Tue, 2015-09-29 10:06So we beach launched in Lancelin yesterday with my trophy 2002 no dramas! About 11 nautical miles out I heard a thump and lost all throttle and power.
Took the cowling off to find the belt completely off and stretched and the compressor completely snapped off the metal bracket (had been grinder off somehow)
had to get towed back! But luckily the boys who helped had ready caught their boat limit by 9am! Thanks to the lads if your reading this
so my question is
1- how the hell did this happen!?
2- does anyone have a reasonably priced marine mechanic who could help fix this? I'm located in Bayswater. I know there could be some other damaged parts but being a 2 stroke there shouldn't be any internal damage hopefully!
Many help is appreciated thanks

Words of advice sought - pics added
Submitted by Cruise Control on Mon, 2015-09-28 16:06OK - so I decided that today was the day to do the wheel bearings. Everything was going swimmingly until the last wheel where I could not loosen off the wheel nut on one stud.
Looks like the stud is rotating in the hub. So no worries thinks I. I'll just take the whole wheel off to do the bearing and then I can sort the stud. Nope, disc brake hub is held on by brake calliper. Loosen off the caliper but can't get it off because wheel rim is in the way.
So I put it all back together and retreated inside to post this. Can anyone offer any advice as to how I can loosen this wheel stud, this is a little beyond my limited experience !
cheers in advance.

Lewmar profish winch issue
Submitted by oz74 on Fri, 2015-09-25 17:30hi all,
I have a lewmar profish (freefall model) 1000 that is only a year or two old and hasn't done a lot of work, but having some issues.
the gypsy just wont seem to grab and retrieve the rope and chain. The teeth on the winch are fine- it just wont tighten.
for those that know the lewmar, it winds out and a form of clutch releases so it can freefall out, you then hit the up button and it will wind a side wheel in until the clutch grabs and then up comes the anchor- the side wheel on mine now winds in but just not enough to grab.
I have tried tinkering with it but cant work out how/ if it can be tightened.
has anyone had this problem or know what/ how / where to fix it?
cheers

Is a new F130 Yamaha enough for a 6m Fraser?
Submitted by fishboy009 on Fri, 2015-09-25 17:03Hi Guys and Gals
I'm thinking of putting a new Yamaha on a 6m fraser, i've got some competitive quotes from the local dealers but one was saying the 130 wouldn't be big enough!!! I was thinking this was just some dodgy salesman tecniques to try and sell a bigger engine and get more money in his pocket, currently I have a 150 V6 mercury saltwater on the back which pushes it along no probs what so ever. (will be up for sale if anyones interested)
So the question is going out to someone who owns a similar setup or just knows their shit, cos once the new engines bolted on the back there is no turning back.
of course i'd like more HP but we all have our limits.
Any feedback would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks
James

Batteries not charging
Submitted by Ancient Mariner on Thu, 2015-09-24 13:00Have a pair of Optima Yellow Top batteries, model D27F.
These are apparently the Ducks Nuts of marine batteries.
Heres my problem: they are 3 years old, haver an inbuilt charger onboard which I always connect when boat parked up. Anyway the extension got accidentally unplugged form power point, the battery isolator was in the "on" position. This was for a period of no more than 3 weeks, maybe shorter. Thay have enough power to illuminate the nav lights, but cant tilt motor, let alone start it! After discovering the cable issue, I promptly plugged it back in, left it for 12 hours but nothing. My charger saying that below 8 volts so cannot charge them.
Am I up for 2 new batteries or can they be rescued? At $320 a pop it hurts!

custom boat builders Perth
Submitted by bouttime on Sun, 2015-09-20 02:28So I have sold the Assassin and after keeping an eye on the market the past few months finding it hard to find the boat i want. Am going to check out a few boat builders in Perth when i am down in October. I know about Epic Marine and will duck in and see them, bullet boats a bit to pricey, anyone else I should go see.
I am looking at building 6.5mtr plate walkaround that will handle the chop. Something like the Assassin but a bit smaller, economical, plenty of deck space and be able to sleep 2 in the cabin.
Any thoughts cheers. BTW wont have time to hit the boat show and only have a few days available.

Yamaha F115B
Submitted by bouttime on Mon, 2015-09-14 05:42Anyone running the new F115b Yamaha 4 stroke or the Mercury 115hp 4 stroke ???
Sold the Etec 90 and looking at the Yamaha, Mercury and Etec in 115hp to repower. All seem around the same weight and I know they all have there pros and cons but concerned the Yamaha will be a slug with the extra weight. As it is will need to put about 30kg of ballast weight in the front of the boat to compensate the extra 30kg on the transom and concerned the Yamaha wont be any better then the Etec 90. Will be going on a 5.5mtr Galeforce thats rated to 120hp but no weight rating. Have spoken with the boat builder but as the boat is 10 years old and they have changed hands he will not give me any help in the extra weight.
BTW the Yamaha is the cheapest with the current promo.

Fuel storage solutions???
Submitted by scotty70 on Mon, 2015-09-07 19:24hey all
Like to go out further but restricted by fuel capacity
Use the portable 25 litre tanks have( 3 of them ) but take up a lot of room if keep adding them to get out further.
Was wondering if others had a similar issue and how they overcome it???

Boats off the trailer
Submitted by crano on Mon, 2015-09-07 16:32I went out today and got some dhus and sambos and a salmon.
Cleaned the fish then bit the bullet and and chucked the boat off the trailer to get it regalvanized.
It was pretty painless and took about an hour. Now the work begins to get the trailer completely stripped
ready for blasting and galv.
Its a bit scary looking at the boat sitting up on the stands.

Another noob question about a first boat
Submitted by clueless on Mon, 2015-09-07 16:02Hi All,
So this is my first post as I have been unable to find my answers from searching google and this forum. I am searching for my first boat and dont have much for it (around $7k) so I would just like some opinions on what I am looking at. I dont have any mates who are knowledgable on this subject either! My only experience is I have been in a 4.2m tinny with a 30hp tiller and it was fun for a bit of fishing.
I live in east freo so will be using the boat mostly on the river, rockingham and Mandurah. Would be nice to have some fun with biscuits and if at all possible a knee/wakeboard (maybe im not being realistic). The three I was thinking about looking at are below
www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/mandurah/motorboats-powerboats/savage-osprey-15ft-power-boat/1086989938
www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/silver-sands/motorboats-powerboats/quintrex-lazeabout-/1087249607
www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/halls-head/motorboats-powerboats/4-6-stacer-boat/1088631343
What are the opinions of these boats? The Osprey was going to be my first choice due to it had the newest engine, then the lazabout because I like the hull shape (assuming its good because it flares :S? ).

engineers recommendation
Submitted by mrwinta on Thu, 2015-09-03 09:32Guys-- can anyone suggest a marine engineer that would be able to take a look at my boat and give a structual report/ reccomendation on some repairs that have been done to my alluminium hull. I noticed 600mm cracks running along the side to floor weld on both sides of the hull and as the boat was 14 months old with no heavy use the manufacturer was keen to fix them but as they are from Victoria they elected a local company to do the work. Me being a welding inspector from what I have seen from the photos I have been sent from the repairer, I am less than happy with the result and feel I have been lied to... I want to get a recommendation from someone official so I can be prepared for a long battle...
SOR if possible... Thanks

Boat starts in gear
Submitted by dakka on Wed, 2015-09-02 18:20Howdy all
I know it's going to sound strange but since I replaced the lower leg on my 30 hP mariner when I start it in neutral it is actually in gear prop turning and I have to put it between neutral and reverse for it to be in neutral. I can't start it in that position thow, I have to put the lever back in right position to start it , which is in gear no good when you are tied to the jetty and trying to warm her up. Also I have reverse but it's not very fast only just moves boat real slow any ideas please Dakka

Here's a Dumb Question...
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Wed, 2015-09-02 15:47I haven’t filled up the tank in my new boat yet. Do I fill it up like a car i.e. hold down the handle until it clicks or do I have to listen for the tank to fill up and avoid filling petrol into the inlet hose?

Taking boat off trailer in carport
Submitted by crano on Wed, 2015-09-02 12:52Hi
I am going to get the trailer for my 6m glass boat regalvanized and need to get the boat off it for a couple of weeks.
I have taken a 4.6m glass boat off before by tieing the boat to a tree on the lawn and dragging the trailer out from under it.
I think it would be a whole different ball game with a 6m boat and I want to do it in the carport.
Iwas thinking of making 3 or 4 props that would sit under the keel and put them in as I pulled the trailer out.Obiously I would make
a couple of props to go on the outside of the boat to keep it upright.
Two questions, has anybody got experience in doing this as all tips are appreciated and do you think 4 props along the hull would be
OK as far as load spread keeping in mind the hull is a signature SVDH that has a planing plank that iss 300mm wide at the back and tapers
off towards the front of the boat
This pic was added after I got ideas from here and made my own setup.

Vinyl Wrap
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2015-09-01 10:26Hi all
After reading a few post on here, especially Genesis restoration can someone more techno fill me in on these Vinyl wraps. How do they stick and who does it. Does look good and I would think would protect a ali from some sinker etc dings.
Can this be done over any existing coating. My old traily has copped a little beating after years heavily fishing the Pilbara and rather than a full pain job was wondering if this was an option to cover minor grazes etc.

boat lighting
Submitted by BarraSlayer on Sat, 2015-08-29 19:12Hey Guys,
Im pretty keen to put some lights on the rig to travel at night. Im on ebay and there is literally 11,000 listings for LED spot lights. Does anyone have any recommendations on products or placements? I have a centre consol with a hard canopy.
I was initally thinking spot light type lights on the roof or near the anchor well and then some flood lights off the roof facing back. I dont want to trash the night vision underway so thinking a light filter (red or orange).
Cheers
